Pros: Lots of detailed information about interpreting animal behavior with figures. Much more info that provided by other commercial travel series books with pictures.Cons: This didn't work as well as I thought it would on Kindle because the figures were small and it was a pain to magnify and try to move around. I bought it for Kindle because I wanted to save space in our safari packing.The main reason I didn't end up using this book was that we found another that was so much more captivating and useful. In our pre-trip reading, we found Cythnia Moss' "Portraits in the Wild" (Portraits in the Wild: Animal Behavior in East Africa)based on her 20+ years experience (when the book was last revised) researching elephants and observing other wildlife in a Kenyan Park just across the border from the Serengeti. This book is so well written. It is an interesting and enjoyable read (my spouse and I both read it before we went and at times were trying to beat the other to the book on a weekend afternoon). But more importantly, to me, she shows a gift for describing how the research is acquired in the field and she tells why she has selected to highlight some researcher's work over others. She also describes for which species there is little research (and the challenges) and highlights the importance of studying behavior in the wild (versus zoos). Reading this book, you gain a deep appreciation for the wildlife included in the book. There are also strong themes and interesting data points for those interested in evolution, impact of environment on development of social behavior. I became so interested that I would tell my work colleagues about all the fascinating facts until they groaned "no more about elephants!" But then, they were forwarding me articles they found elsewhere and I think the books' content was somewhat infectious. I also read about elephant family histories on her website and watched a couple of PBS documentaries that feature her work with elephants (google: Echo PBS). Also since this book was published a while ago, you can get used hardback copies for ~$2 on Amazon marketplace.

More then a simple field guide, this book focuses on East African mammalian behavior and social organizations. Much contemporary research on mammalian behavior informs the chapters. Line drawings take the place of the color photographs (that you would find in many other guides), which give it a nice retro feel. Nevertheless, it has a modern organizational schema with lots of boldfaced subheading and bullet points which make it easy to find information quickly. There are icon-based labels that allows the reader to identify the characteristics of each species social organization. Descriptions of social organization, play, courtship behaviors, territoriality, parenting patterns allow observers to interpret their observations in the field while on safari. It's like having a naturalist along with you, pointing out the subtleties of animal behaviors and communication.In some parts of the book, there is specific information about wildlife populations. For example, in the section on Spotted Hyenas, the author reports data from one female that was tracked with a radio collar in the Ngorongoro Crater, noting how starkly different the level of activity necessary to find food was compared to hyenas in Kalhari Gemsbock National Park, where food is harder to come by. This level of scientific detail nicely complements the comprehensive descriptions of each species life and environment.I ended buying this after borrowing it from my local library. I also purchased a Princeton Pocket Guide to Wildlife of East Africa by Withers and Hosking full of colored photos - mostly because of its vast listing of birds that are not in the Safari Companion. The Princeton Guide also has photos of many reptiles. It is clear that I will learn the most from the Safari Companion, however.

More of a reference book than a reading book, at least for me: nonetheless I at least skimmed every page, so I feel fair counting it toward my annual total. Unlike most field guides, which tell you what the animals look like and how to find them, this book concentrates on the animals' typical behavior and how to understand what you see when you watch them.It is, frankly, repetitious and more than a bit boring. But such is the price of information sometimes.The illustrations, by Daniel Otte, are quite beautiful.

Read this before a trip to Tanzania, and it really helped me understand what I was seeing. Prior to reading this work we did a self-drive tour of Namibia (a place everyone should go as soon as they possibly can!!). We saw lots of large mammals, but, not being able to put their behavior into a larger context, I feel (after having read this work) that I didn't appreciate our sightings as fully as I would now.A great book!VISIT NAMIBIA!!!!!

I was looking for a book or two (as luggage weight limits were tight)to enhance my first safari experience to the national parks of Tanzania. I selected this book based on Amazon.com reader feedback. It was a real help during the safari and continues to be used while reviewing video, photos, and books on African wildlife. I also took a good field guide (Audubon)--but these were widely available on the safari 4WD as well as at the lodges. What makes the Estes book unique is it describes the MEANING of the behavior and social groups you see on the game drives. Almost daily we would see sights that struck me as unexpected--like an all male group of 40 impalas, or zebras leading a line of hundreds of wildebeest; I'd look up that species in the Estes book back at camp and he would explain the meaning of the behavior. My safari mates were all very experienced and involved in zoos in the USA. They would often ask to borrow my "Estes" for their use.In my opinion, if you can only take one book other than your safari journal--take this one. If you can take two, include a good field guide (like Audubon).

I was told there was cash buried deep in that book. Turns out there was. I bought 40 copies and all but one had a 50 dollar bill tucked into the pages. At $14.99 a book I netted about $1400 in cash on day one. Over the next two weeks, I up-sold 39 of my copies at $29.99 a piece and read the remaining copy in the mean time. It took me about 5 minutes to achieve a perfect life. I play slots full time on zone certified slot machines and have won millions.My only objection with the book is the nature in which they collect the $100 dollar landowners fee. I sent in a check to my local zone priest and didn't realize that the payment was only accepted in cash. I didn't take long before a large, hardened man with a dark background and a low IQ showed up to collect the money. I was able to pay the man the $100 I owed but not before he beat my zone wife and son. Turns out the priest ended up cashing my check anyway so I ended up paying twice.

At that time his book was called Essential C# 3.0 for .NET framework 3.5.I'm a consultant and this is crucial material to help prepare me for technical interviews and just overall day-day coding examples. Examples are clean and concise. This is my "go to" book for learning .NET Framework features. I have to say I'm lagging a bit on all the new changes so I was excited to find out that this book just released an update for C# version 6.There have been many improvements in the language since the 3.0 book and this book has outlined those changes in a rather unique way. There is a main index listing all keywords and then a "topics" index organized by language version number. We also get the added benefit version tags, highlighting the version number within the text of the book. The versions are interlaced sequentially in a chapter rather than segmented out. That is you start out by reading about anonymous methods (C# 2.0) and segue in lambdas (C# 3.0) by the end of the chapter you are reading about a (C# 5.0) improvement called capturing loop variables. In this way, you see the evolution of the language. Really cool.The C#/.NET version tags are very helpful. I typically skip the introduction because I already know all that basic stuff but saw a 6.0 version tag with a little gem called "string interpolation" on page 20 - It's a shorthand way of coding string.Format. I would have missed the new feature had it not been for the tag.The C# version number is clearly highlighted so you know at all times what version you are reading about. If you need to find a specific feature use the full index. If you want to find new features to a specific language version, then use "Index of 6.0 Topics", "Index of 5.0 Topics", etc. This is the best approach to trying to index the massive amount of info. And this book is massive! I'm enjoying going thru it again as a review, but more importantly as an enhancement to my 6.0 knowledge. Thank you guys for this recent update.

But that's a tiny complaint; the book is thorough and very helpful. Worth every dollar.Addendum, 9-Jan 2016The book was quite helpful modernizing a largish VS 2008 project to vs 2015. It was relatively easy to search for "C# 6" to find all the ways to improve the applications.

First a critique of the review process. I hate that Amazon insists that I choose one of their descriptive words to "describe the plot of this book." They gave me the choices of "predictable," "some twists," or "full of surprises," none of which are an apt summary of The Red Tent.Many thoughtful reviews have already been posted. I will affirm that it was wonderful to read this story, told from the point of view of the women. In those times, women were treated as chattel and the only power they had was that of producing sons. They claimed that power, and it was fascinating. I also liked the portrayal of the community of women and what they brought to the family economy, I hope that part is "true."I love the historical fiction quality of the book. The alternative perspectives from Biblical literalism is a relief. The alternate perspective on Dinah's "rape" is worthy of contemplation. In today's world, there are "honor killings" that sometimes occur when women have sex outside of marriage, whether it's consensual or rape. We have a modern context for seeing women who don't have self determination, whose marriages are arranged, or consent still only comes with a price. It's not that hard to see the possibility of an alternate reality for Dinah. It certainly makes for a great story. I am fascinated by the tensions and textures created by the encounters with people of differing beliefs, the women practicing the old ways, those who don't, the paganism, those following the God of Abraham, and then the Egyptians. It is interesting to follow how those beliefs color their lives and how they interact with people of differing beliefs. One can also experience that in the reviews here on Amazon!I do not find the story anti-male or anti-Bible. When one recalls that men had all the power, then tragic use of power is on the men. But other aspects of power appear in the encounters between the shepherd and the king, and Dinah amongst the Egyptians, etc. The tensions of religion and culture and social position within the tribe and beyond are part of the story.I've tried to write without spoilers. It's a great book. One can be a person of faith without being insulted by a single syllable in this book. Criticisms from 2000 are interesting, but I think that time is on the side of deep appreciation for The Red Tent.

Being Russian Orthodox (where, at least in our little corner of the world, Bible reading is for the priests and not only not encouraged, but is not a thing at all for the laypeople), I can hardly comment on the differences between this retelling and the original text. What I can say is that this book is an insight, however fictional, into the lives of women at a time when they were but footnotes in the history of men, if mentioned at all. I would recommend The Red Tent to anyone who wants more than read a footnote, or anyone, who, like me, had trouble even starting reading the Bible, specifically for the reason that the stories told are missing half the people. Ignore the controversy and just read it. This book is worth judging for yourself. To me, it was worth reading just for a glimpse of time, even if only imagined, when at least someone didn't see being a woman (childbirth, menstruation, etc.) as being cursed by uncleanliness. There are countless women and girls even today, all over the world, whose futures are maimed and ruined just for this reason. There are people out there who are working hard to change this attitude, and a book like this, a new perspective, can help more than an argument.

This is not a good book for someone who is trying to learn the story of Jacob. I read half and had to stop. At one point in the story, it talks about Jacob telling the story of Abram. However, the author writes that Sarai was a priestess, and that a goddess came upon her and made her with child. This is not at all what the Bible teaches. There are many things in the Bible that you can let your mind wonder about like how the conversation went between Jonathan and David when Saul tries to kill David and how the people of Egypt were probably screaming and crying when God was sending plagues. However, the Bible is very clear on what happened to Abram and Sarai, and it had absolutely nothing to do with a goddess. Also, the Bible clearly states that Dinah was raped not in love. I would just suggest that you be careful when reading this and understand that the Bible does not agree with many of the things written in this book!

This is the second d time I've read this book. Know, I don't reread books. I have recommended this book since the first time I read it, back in my 20's, but now that I'm older, I felt it deserved a second review. I fell in love all over again, but for different reasons. The first time I was in awe that's actually liked it. I loved the celebration ration of a strong female character and heroine. Now, I still love it for the same reasons but in a different way. I love her quiet strength. Her resolve. Her confidence. Her self-awareness. It was a book anew to me. And a celebration of womanhood all over in a more mature way. Still in love and would recommend all over again!!!

I normally love historical novels. I found The Red Tent very informative with regard to the life-styles, and traditions of the time.I did find it a bit long-winded in places and switched to speed-reading whereas I normally like to "savor" the literature that I read.I still enjoyed the book and have recommended it to my book club

Extraordinary story, and a very unique one, which enhanced my enjoyment. Even before I finished, I wanted to go back to the Book of Genesis and refresh my memory about the characters and their lineage. The bible, in most instances, gives little history of its women, and it was truly refreshing to read a fictional first-person narrative from a barely-mentioned woman of that time period, telling us her version of her life. I was particularly drawn into the sisterhood of the red tent--the practices of the time, and how women survived primitive conditions, especially primitive births. But I also wanted to know more about the men in Dinah's family, and what happened to them. Fascinating book and stellar accomplishment, taking me into the ancient world for several pleasant hours.

This book is filled with modern and innovative designs that I can't decide which to make first! The projects are all sorts of shapes and include lots of textures and colors. There are excellent directions with clear and informative step by step photos to ensure complete success in casting the concrete. The molds use lots of recycled containers along with unexpected things like duct tape. If you like plants and tiny gardens this would be a great companion craft to feature your green creations.

Ina Garten and French cuisine. An interesting combination! I have a couple other of her cookbooks and have enjoyed a number of the menus that she has published. So, I was intrigued when I saw this volume.There are some recipes in here that differ from ones that I have tried over time. And that is always attractive to look at. Can I improve my recipes by looking at those of someone else? Examples:Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic. I first tried this at a dinner party 35 years ago. I really enjoyed it. I tried it a handful of times over the years and enjoyed the family recipe that I used. This is a nice variation. Intriguing variations from what I was used to? Cognac and heavy cream.Or Boeuf Bourguignon, a fancy name for a beef stew. This is fairly similar to my version. Distinctions? Cognac, beef broth. One difference. After having dined on this dish at a local restaurant, I enjoyed their reduction of the liquid, making the whole dish much richer. Hence, now, I reduce the liquid. This version does not. Still, there are some elements here that I need to incorporate into my own recipe next time around.And Croque monsieur. One of my favorite French lunches. Nice and makeable recipe. And a tasty outcome! Filet of beef au poivre. I have just begun to make similar dishes, and this recipe is a nice one! Again, cognac adds a nice element to the sauce.Garten says at the outset (Page 15): "I hope you'll find lots of entertaining ideas here and recipes that will not only wow your family and friends, but also convince you how easy it is to cook really delicious French food. . . ."

It looks like I've owned this book now for 11 years, it sure doesn't seem like I've had it for that long. It comes off my shelf for special occasions more than any other cookbook in my collection. In fact, we just used it again for three courses for our big Christmas dinner for friends. I can't say enough good things about this book so I'll try to point out some highlights. The Goat Cheese Tart has been a huge hit at three Christmas parties over the years. The Indonesian Gingered Chicken just made it's umpteenth appearance but this time as an Amuse Bouche to rave reviews and requests for the recipe at our Christmas table this year. The Chocolate Buttercream Cake was our dessert choice and everyone loved it. The roasted Tomato Soup was our soup course this year and people asked for some to take home. Over the years her salads have made repeated visits, especially her French Potato Salad. We've made several of the soup and appetizer courses and have tried the majority of her dinner ideas. The desserts are always welcome as well. I think that other reviewers have pointed out that this may be the best in her collections and I agree. We own a couple more of her books but this is the one that I always check first when I'm looking for something really good for ourselves or for our guests.

I love to cook, it is one of my greatest pleasures. I love food, learning new recipes, serving people dinner - from fancy get togethers, to a casual meal - and the one constant I always go back to are Ina Garten's cookbooks. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, themed to give readers top recipes from her now-closed gourmet store in The Hamptons, is absolutely no exception.First, the photographs in the book are amazing. They show beautiful meals of completed recipes, as well as some concerning choosing the freshest ingredients, preparing a recipe, and setting the table. Instead of making one feel intimidated or lacking because you don't have a 1,000 square foot kitchen of your own, they are inspiring, and make you excited to try each new recipe. Second, the food is, simply, divine. While there are some very creative and new recipes, many of the recipes are classics with a few new twists, that truly elevate the food. My favorite recipe in the book - as you can tell from my photograph how dirty the page is from me cooking it over and over - is the recipe for Filet of Beef Bourguignon. Ina took a Julia Child classic recipe and cut out a few hours of cooking time by using filets of beef. Truly delicious and so much easier to prepare. Serve it for your next dinner party, and you will get nothing but raves.

I have several of Ina's other books, but I seem to make and re-make things out of this cookbook more than the others combined. There's a great spinach pie recipe in here as well as a vegetable torte that I make regularly because I like a solid vegetable entre I can eat on all week with a salad. I make the spinach pie with a spaghetti squash crust rather than using pastry, thereby getting another vegetable serving and avoiding gluten.

I've had this cookbook for years -- almost since it was first published. I love it. I have used so many of the recipes and go back to them over time. The recipes are good, easy to prepare and very thoroughly tested for the average cook. Several friends are as hooked on BC as I am. We use her cookbooks for everyday and as a source of ideas for holidays, family dinners, parties -- everything.

The pictures are stunning, the recipes easy to read, understand and follow, in short it is probably the best cooking book I ever read. Every recipe seems easy. I already tried the Provençal potato salad and it was simple and so delicious and fresh. I can't wait to try the rest. I have made lots of Ina's recipes which I got from the Food Network, and all are super great recipes, so I know her recipes are fool proof and delicious. I will be buying many more of her books. Love her, this woman can cook! Oh, and there are tips that are super helpful on almost every recipe.

All of Ina's cookbooks are terrific. This one is a culinary thrill for me having vacationed in Paris.My friends wonder where I get the know how to put on party after party every time with such sucess and skill.I keep Ina as my little secret !
