First a critique of the review process. I hate that Amazon insists that I choose one of their descriptive words to "describe the plot of this book." They gave me the choices of "predictable," "some twists," or "full of surprises," none of which are an apt summary of The Red Tent. Many thoughtful reviews have already been posted. I will affirm that it was wonderful to read this story, told from the point of view of the women. In those times, women were treated as chattel and the only power they had was that of producing sons. They claimed that power, and it was fascinating. I also liked the portrayal of the community of women and what they brought to the family economy, I hope that part is "true."I love the historical fiction quality of the book. The alternative perspectives from Biblical literalism is a relief. The alternate perspective on Dinah's "rape" is worthy of contemplation. In today's world, there are "honor killings" that sometimes occur when women have sex outside of marriage, whether it's consensual or rape. We have a modern context for seeing women who don't have self determination, whose marriages are arranged, or consent still only comes with a price. It's not that hard to see the possibility of an alternate reality for Dinah. It certainly makes for a great story. I am fascinated by the tensions and textures created by the encounters with people of differing beliefs, the women practicing the old ways, those who don't, the paganism, those following the God of Abraham, and then the Egyptians. It is interesting to follow how those beliefs color their lives and how they interact with people of differing beliefs. One can also experience that in the reviews here on Amazon!I do not find the story anti-male or anti-Bible. When one recalls that men had all the power, then tragic use of power is on the men. But other aspects of power appear in the encounters between the shepherd and the king, and Dinah amongst the Egyptians, etc. The tensions of religion and culture and social position within the tribe and beyond are part of the story.I've tried to write without spoilers. It's a great book. One can be a person of faith without being insulted by a single syllable in this book. Criticisms from 2000 are interesting, but I think that time is on the side of deep appreciation for The Red Tent.

Being Russian Orthodox (where, at least in our little corner of the world, Bible reading is for the priests and not only not encouraged, but is not a thing at all for the laypeople), I can hardly comment on the differences between this retelling and the original text. What I can say is that this book is an insight, however fictional, into the lives of women at a time when they were but footnotes in the history of men, if mentioned at all. I would recommend The Red Tent to anyone who wants more than read a footnote, or anyone, who, like me, had trouble even starting reading the Bible, specifically for the reason that the stories told are missing half the people. Ignore the controversy and just read it. This book is worth judging for yourself. To me, it was worth reading just for a glimpse of time, even if only imagined, when at least someone didn't see being a woman (childbirth, menstruation, etc.) as being cursed by uncleanliness. There are countless women and girls even today, all over the world, whose futures are maimed and ruined just for this reason. There are people out there who are working hard to change this attitude, and a book like this, a new perspective, can help more than an argument.

This is not a good book for someone who is trying to learn the story of Jacob. I read half and had to stop. At one point in the story, it talks about Jacob telling the story of Abram. However, the author writes that Sarai was a priestess, and that a goddess came upon her and made her with child. This is not at all what the Bible teaches. There are many things in the Bible that you can let your mind wonder about like how the conversation went between Jonathan and David when Saul tries to kill David and how the people of Egypt were probably screaming and crying when God was sending plagues. However, the Bible is very clear on what happened to Abram and Sarai, and it had absolutely nothing to do with a goddess. Also, the Bible clearly states that Dinah was raped not in love. I would just suggest that you be careful when reading this and understand that the Bible does not agree with many of the things written in this book!

This is the second d time I've read this book. Know, I don't reread books. I have recommended this book since the first time I read it, back in my 20's, but now that I'm older, I felt it deserved a second review. I fell in love all over again, but for different reasons. The first time I was in awe that's actually liked it. I loved the celebration ration of a strong female character and heroine. Now, I still love it for the same reasons but in a different way. I love her quiet strength. Her resolve. Her confidence. Her self-awareness. It was a book anew to me. And a celebration of womanhood all over in a more mature way. Still in love and would recommend all over again!!!

I normally love historical novels. I found The Red Tent very informative with regard to the life-styles, and traditions of the time.I did find it a bit long-winded in places and switched to speed-reading whereas I normally like to "savor" the literature that I read.I still enjoyed the book and have recommended it to my book club

Extraordinary story, and a very unique one, which enhanced my enjoyment. Even before I finished, I wanted to go back to the Book of Genesis and refresh my memory about the characters and their lineage. The bible, in most instances, gives little history of its women, and it was truly refreshing to read a fictional first-person narrative from a barely-mentioned woman of that time period, telling us her version of her life. I was particularly drawn into the sisterhood of the red tent--the practices of the time, and how women survived primitive conditions, especially primitive births. But I also wanted to know more about the men in Dinah's family, and what happened to them. Fascinating book and stellar accomplishment, taking me into the ancient world for several pleasant hours.

Amazon.com Review

Ina Garten's much loved cookbooks, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, Barefoot Contessa Parties!, and Barefoot Contessa Family Style, offer relaxed yet stylish dishes that don't tax the cook. Her food works wonderfully for entertaining but shouldn't be limited to such times. Barefoot in Paris finds Garten (almost inevitably) in France, "translating" native dishes for the American home cook. The result is rewarding, and should get those reluctant to "cook French" to do just that. Covered are classics like Celery Root Rémoulade, Boeuf Bourguignon, and Chicken with Forty Cloves of Garlic, but also "newer" dishes like Zucchini Vichyssoise and Avocado and Grapefruit Salad. If Garten ranges wide from typical Parisian fare--in, for example, recipes like Rosemary Cashews, Tomato Rice Pilaf, and a distinctly American Brownie Tart--these nonetheless embody the French approach. Her sweets, including the likes of Peaches in Sauternes, Plum Cake "Tatin," and an exemplary Crème Brûlée, are particularly tempting. Included also are asides like "About French Table Settings," and "If You're Going," a resource guide, that, practicality apart, give readers a sense of French culinary life. With color photos, this is winning addition to the Barefoot collection. --Arthur Boehm

From the Inside Flap

Hearty boeuf Bourguignon served in deep bowls over a garlic-rubbed slice of baguette toast; decadently rich croque monsieur, eggy and oozing with cheese; gossamer creme brulee, its sweetness offset by a brittle burnt-sugar topping. Whether shared in a cozy French bistro or in your own home, the romance and enduring appeal of French country cooking is irrefutable. Here is the book that helps you bring that spirit, those evocative dishes, into your own home. What Ina Garten is known for--on her Food Network show and in her three previous bestselling books--is adding a special twist to familiar dishes, while also streamlining the recipes so you spend less time in the kitchen but still emerge with perfection. And that's exactly what she offers in "Barefoot in Paris. Ina's kir royale includes the unique addition of raspberry liqueur--a refreshing alternative to the traditional creme de cassis. Her vichyssoise is brightened with the addition of zucchini, and her chocolate mousse is deeply flavored with the essence of orange. All of these dishes are true to their Parisian roots, but all offer something special--and are thoroughly delicious, completely accessible, and the perfect fare for friends and family. "Barefoot in Paris is suffused with Ina's love of the city, of the bustling outdoor markets and alluring little shops, of the bakeries and fromageries and charcuteries--of the wonderful celebration of food that you find on every street corner, in every neighborhood. So take a trip to Paris with the perfect guide--the Barefoot Contessa herself--in her most personal book yet.

Ina Garten and French cuisine. An interesting combination! I have a couple other of her cookbooks and have enjoyed a number of the menus that she has published. So, I was intrigued when I saw this volume. There are some recipes in here that differ from ones that I have tried over time. And that is always attractive to look at. Can I improve my recipes by looking at those of someone else? Examples:Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic. I first tried this at a dinner party 35 years ago. I really enjoyed it. I tried it a handful of times over the years and enjoyed the family recipe that I used. This is a nice variation. Intriguing variations from what I was used to? Cognac and heavy cream.Or Boeuf Bourguignon, a fancy name for a beef stew. This is fairly similar to my version. Distinctions? Cognac, beef broth. One difference. After having dined on this dish at a local restaurant, I enjoyed their reduction of the liquid, making the whole dish much richer. Hence, now, I reduce the liquid. This version does not. Still, there are some elements here that I need to incorporate into my own recipe next time around. And Croque monsieur. One of my favorite French lunches. Nice and makeable recipe. And a tasty outcome! Filet of beef au poivre. I have just begun to make similar dishes, and this recipe is a nice one! Again, cognac adds a nice element to the sauce.Garten says at the outset (Page 15): "I hope you'll find lots of entertaining ideas here and recipes that will not only wow your family and friends, but also convince you how easy it is to cook really delicious French food. . . ."

It looks like I've owned this book now for 11 years, it sure doesn't seem like I've had it for that long. It comes off my shelf for special occasions more than any other cookbook in my collection. In fact, we just used it again for three courses for our big Christmas dinner for friends. I can't say enough good things about this book so I'll try to point out some highlights. The Goat Cheese Tart has been a huge hit at three Christmas parties over the years. The Indonesian Gingered Chicken just made it's umpteenth appearance but this time as an Amuse Bouche to rave reviews and requests for the recipe at our Christmas table this year. The Chocolate Buttercream Cake was our dessert choice and everyone loved it. The roasted Tomato Soup was our soup course this year and people asked for some to take home. Over the years her salads have made repeated visits, especially her French Potato Salad. We've made several of the soup and appetizer courses and have tried the majority of her dinner ideas. The desserts are always welcome as well. I think that other reviewers have pointed out that this may be the best in her collections and I agree. We own a couple more of her books but this is the one that I always check first when I'm looking for something really good for ourselves or for our guests.

I love to cook, it is one of my greatest pleasures. I love food, learning new recipes, serving people dinner - from fancy get togethers, to a casual meal - and the one constant I always go back to are Ina Garten's cookbooks. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, themed to give readers top recipes from her now-closed gourmet store in The Hamptons, is absolutely no exception.First, the photographs in the book are amazing. They show beautiful meals of completed recipes, as well as some concerning choosing the freshest ingredients, preparing a recipe, and setting the table. Instead of making one feel intimidated or lacking because you don't have a 1,000 square foot kitchen of your own, they are inspiring, and make you excited to try each new recipe. Second, the food is, simply, divine. While there are some very creative and new recipes, many of the recipes are classics with a few new twists, that truly elevate the food. My favorite recipe in the book - as you can tell from my photograph how dirty the page is from me cooking it over and over - is the recipe for Filet of Beef Bourguignon. Ina took a Julia Child classic recipe and cut out a few hours of cooking time by using filets of beef. Truly delicious and so much easier to prepare. Serve it for your next dinner party, and you will get nothing but raves.

I have several of Ina's other books, but I seem to make and re-make things out of this cookbook more than the others combined. There's a great spinach pie recipe in here as well as a vegetable torte that I make regularly because I like a solid vegetable entre I can eat on all week with a salad. I make the spinach pie with a spaghetti squash crust rather than using pastry, thereby getting another vegetable serving and avoiding gluten.

I've had this cookbook for years -- almost since it was first published. I love it. I have used so many of the recipes and go back to them over time. The recipes are good, easy to prepare and very thoroughly tested for the average cook. Several friends are as hooked on BC as I am. We use her cookbooks for everyday and as a source of ideas for holidays, family dinners, parties -- everything.

This book is more than a cooking book,it is a pleasure to read and get to know Ina better. The pictures are stunning, the recipes easy to read, understand and follow, in short it is probably the best cooking book I ever read. Every recipe seems easy. I already tried the Provençal potato salad and it was simple and so delicious and fresh. I can't wait to try the rest. I have made lots of Ina's recipes which I got from the Food Network, and all are super great recipes, so I know her recipes are fool proof and delicious. I will be buying many more of her books. Love her, this woman can cook! Oh, and there are tips that are super helpful on almost every recipe.

All of Ina's cookbooks are terrific. This one is a culinary thrill for me having vacationed in Paris. My friends wonder where I get the know how to put on party after party every time with such sucess and skill.I keep Ina as my little secret !

Aristotle's Poetics (Dramabook,)

Amazon.com Review

The original, Aristotle's short study of storytelling, written in the fourth century B.C., is the world's first critical book about the laws of literature. Sure, it's 2400 years old, but Aristotle's discussions--Unity of Plot, Reversal of the Situation, Character--though written in the context of ancient Greek Tragedy, Comedy and Epic Poetry, still apply to our modern literary forms. The book is quite short, and Aristotle illuminates his points with clear examples, making the Poetics perfectly readable, the better to impress people at parties when you say, "Of course, as Aristotle says..."

A good guide on how to write a story. Forget all this rising action/climax/falling action nonsense. Instead have a unity of action, a noble character or protagonist with a human failing. Have him make a tragic error (hamartia) which will lead to a peripeteia or reversal of fortune... good luck to bad luck. Let the plot become complicated with unforeseen consequences which will lead to disaster in which the main character suffers the most as a consequence of his foolish actions. Let the story finish with him understanding that he is the author of his own downfall (anagnorisis). Let the reader go away with a sense of pathos for the protagonist. Read Sophocles's Antigone and you will see this perfectly.

I bought this because Aaron Sorkin said it was one of his favorite books on writing. I expected dense and it is but not in the way I imagined. It's also clever and interesting and in an odd way comforting to know these writing principles are ancient and true-- true in the way of hitting their mark. However, a practical guide on writing this is not, you have to sift through it to find what applies to your writing. Not sure I agree with Sorkin, but glad to have read it. Plus, now I can sound sooooooo cerebral when I tell people I read this.

I ordered this particular translation of the Poetics for a two-person reading group. The other member recommended it for the translation and this being my first reading of the whole text I was happy to go along. In the end it was a fine choice for the translation, but the commentary comes along with it and I couldn't leave it out of my review completely.First, the translation:No nits to pick here. It is very clear and readable. This isn't Aristotle at his most refined, but the translation should be accesible to anyone with the interest in reading it. Halliwell hasn't shied away from the overtly normative language that permeates the text, nor has he attempted to inject more structure or content than the text can bear.Given that the commentary is (apparently) geared to folks with an interest in contemporary aesthetics, it is nice to see that Halliwell has not colored the text in a way that might be more palatable to the contemporary aesthetician. A few passages sent me scrambling for the OCT, but I always ended up happy with Halliwell's rendering. Two notes: 1) Halliwell has opted for "mimesis" and "mimetic" throughout. This is a case of a philosophical concept in transliteration rather than translation, but probably ought to be. This choice, and a few others, make the text more appropriate for the academically minded, though the Poetics might not be leisurely reading anyhow...and 2) Halliwell's translation does not include Bekker pages nor numbers. Chapter breaks are included but are of limited usefulness for reference to the OCT, etc. Then, the commentary:I should admit that I am not the target audience for Halliwell's commentary. I would be an embarrassingly bad classicist, if I were to claim to be one...and I am not independently interested in contemporary aesthetics. That being the case, the commentary might be quite useful for other readers. Halliwell raises interesting points quite often and points up tensions in Aristotle's view writ large, but often misses the trees for the forest. Late in the book, admittedly where the lack of book II is most glaring, Aristotle introduces new machinery or recalls distinctions hastily made. Halliwell is silent here, perhaps because he just isn't interested in this fine-grained a reading...but that seems like just what a commentary ought to be interested in. One major issue is that the commentary occasionally reads like an argumentative essay - an argument for Halliwell's reading - but doesn't seem particularly well argued. Early assumptions are taken for granted in later chapters, etc.Since I am almost positive that Halliwell has other folks in mind, and since my interests might be especially idiosyncratic anyway, I have tried not to let my thoughts on the commentary cloud the overall review...The bottom line: if you're looking for just a translation of the Poetics, this won't disappoint. I can't compare it directly to other translations, but it is accesible and I didn't find much to quibble with when I turned to the OCT. The commentary isn't, and doesn't pretend to be, a concentrated analysis of the philosophical framework on offer. It is an interesting essay on the development of aesthetics, the bridge between Aristotle and contemporary thinkers, and is probably quite full of material that would interest classicists and aestheticians. I can't really fault the commentary for having a different aim than I had hoped, and one need not refer to it besides. For the student of Aristotle, someone interested in aesthetics and wanting to read this foundational treatise, or someone interested in the history of philosophy (or thinking in general), I think this translation will certainly meet your needs.

I read this book in an effort to enhance my personal hobby of script writing. If I recall correctly, I read somehwere that this is an important book regarding proper plot structure. Having read the book I believe this to be true. It touches upon tragedy, epics, comedies, plot, character, reasoning among other things.Granted, this was written at a time when theater and poetry were the thing (LEDs were not in fashion at the time). And when taken in that context, the book makes a lot of sense. I have since found the structure to be in many movies I have watched over the years. It has added significant value to how I am developing characters in my stories and the stories themselves. This is not a definitive guide. Story telling has eveolved throughout the ages. But, knowing the evolution helps write better. Or at least it does for me.As with the writings of all philosophers (and I personally like Aristotle), the text is meant to be studied. It is NOT a step by step guide. You read a little and think a lot. Happy reading!

This review refers to the "Penguin Classics" edition with an introduction by Malcolm Health: This book was often referred to by both my high school and college literature teachers although it has taken me an additional +20 years to actually read the book. I am glad I did. I think those interested in western literature or aesthetics will find Poetic's to be an essential read as it provides the initial codification of concepts such as tragedy, comedy, plot, unity, character, and katharsis. Malcolm Heath's introduction is absolutely essential and is worth the price of the book alone.

Not what I thought it would be. This has a hard-to-read, Courier 10pt, single-spaced translation of Poetics that is about as impenetrable as any other out there. It's backed by a mishmash of student exercises drafted in varying fonts. The exercises seem to have no relationship to the text of Poetics. "Annotated" is misleading at best.

A scam! This "annotated" version of Aristotles Poetics is nothing of the sort! The publisher simply stuck a bunch of predetermined exercises designed for helping middle school students write book reports after the original text in translation. Exercises which make no mention of Poetics, and shed no additional light on them. I want my money back!!!

I read the author's intro before getting the book and immediately saw the translator wasn't a big fan of paragraphs. The guy must have a vendetta. Big long tracts of text with very few paragraph pauses make this a real slog. There are much better translations out there.

Cons:- sometimes the translation would sound odd if read out loud and other times a statement would contradict itself.- not sure why but this book was not part of the original series and was more difficult to find when I bought it.Pros:- the author does it again. Shi Feng continues to progress and exploit his advantage in an entertaining way. There isn't much difference in writing style or plot development from the last book but that is good news for me. Really looking forward to the next in the series.

I am really enjoying this series and I am looking forward to book 6. Have to say well worth the money and the time to read it.I recommend anyone starting the series does so from the first book as they build upon each other and the way in which the MC uses his key advantage establishes a clear power progression. At the same time, the MC still faces challenges as the virtual world is evolving far quicker and there is an increasing level of divergence and the MC needs to call upon all his inner resources as well as his epic team to triumph.

A future society where to succeed (also earn RL money) you need to train mind and body and one place succeed is in the online VRMMO game God’s Domain. The MC is Shi Feng who in the first book is reincarnated as his earlier self but with 10 years of experience and knowledge of God’s Domain. In book 5 he is having to deal with events in God’s Domain that are now changing from what he remembers because of his actions in the game. Hopefully book 6 will be available soon.

I really like this whole series and this book continues it nicely. There's nothing too deep here. You might call this book brain candy.I also think the earlier books had a bit more to them..But I still love it.

The name of this book is perfect. This because Feng and his group rose like a rocket. Before they could truly make a foothold for themselves they have alot of work ahead them. This book is a great edition to the series.

From the very first book to this latest installment the story has remained incredibly consistent! There’s something that strikes a chord in me lately with these types of novels. I am always anticipating the next release in the series.

Great book, my only complaint is that each book in the entire series reads like a single book that was cut up into smaller pieces indiscriminately. None of the books come to a close, they just end

Can’t wait until the next volume! This book was very fast paced and interesting. Keep up the good work. Want to find out how he gets the 30,000 gold!
