From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—Aven Green has always loved her life in Kansas—hanging out with Emily and Kayla, her best friends since kindergarten; planning pranks; and playing on the school soccer team. Though Aven was born without arms, she has never let her "lack of armage," as she calls it, deter her from doing anything she sets her mind to. But when her father gets a job as the manager of Stagecoach Pass, a rundown Western theme park out in Arizona, the family's move, right after Aven has started eighth grade, presents her toughest challenge yet. Having to deal with the many stares and questions of new schoolmates, Aven sorely misses her old life back in Kansas. However, her unflinchingly optimistic spirit, accompanied by her infectious and indomitable sense of humor, keeps her looking for the silver linings in her new life in Arizona, such as making friends with the cute but prickly Connor (who has Tourette's syndrome) or enjoying the ability to wear flats all year-round. But the most fascinating thing is the unusual mystery at the heart of Stagecoach Pass: the disappearing tarantulas, a missing photograph, and a secret necklace. Aven is determined to get to the bottom of the secret. She is a perky, hilarious, and inspiring protagonist whose attitude and humor will linger even after the last page has turned. The tale of Stagecoach Pass is just as compelling as the story of Aven, and the setting, like the many colorful characters who people this novel, is so vivid and quirky that it's practically cinematic. VERDICT Charming and memorable. An excellent choice for middle grade collections and classrooms.—Evelyn Khoo Schwartz, Georgetown Day School, Washington, DC

★“Aven Green has always loved her life in Kansas—hanging out with Emily and Kayla, her best friends since kindergarten; planning pranks; and playing on the school soccer team. Though Aven was born without arms, she has never let her ‘lack of armage,’ as she calls it, deter her from doing anything she sets her mind to. But when her father gets a job as the manager of Stagecoach Pass, a rundown Western theme park out in Arizona, the family’s move, right after Aven has started eighth grade, presents her toughest challenge yet. Having to deal with the many stares and questions of new schoolmates, Aven sorely misses her old life back in Kansas. However, her unflinchingly optimistic spirit, accompanied by her infectious and indomitable sense of humor, keeps her looking for the silver linings in her new life in Arizona, such as making friends with the cute but prickly Connor (who has Tourette’s syndrome) or enjoying the ability to wear flats all year-round. The tale of Stagecoach Pass is just as compelling as the story of Aven, and the setting, like the many colorful characters who people this novel, is so vivid and quirky that it’s practically cinematic. VERDICT Charming and memorable. An excellent choice for middle grade collections and classrooms.” —School Library Journal (starred review)★"A move to dusty, distant Arizona forces 13-year-old Aven to leave her familiar life and friends behind. Don’t yawn: Bowling takes this overworked trope and spins it into gold with a skein of terrific twists. For one thing, Aven was born without arms, so the new environment—a decrepit Wild West theme park—poses special challenges. For another, thanks to loving, funny adoptive parents who have raised her to be a “problem-solving ninja” (“I’m so flexible, it would blow your mind,” she boasts), readers may repeatedly forget, despite reminders enough, that Aven is (as she puts it) “unarmed.” Moreover, when the dreary prospect of having to cope with the looks and questions at her new middle school sends her in search of an isolated place to eat her lunch she finds and bonds with Conner, who is struggling with Tourette's syndrome and has not been so lucky with his parents. Not only does she firmly enlist him and another new friend in investigating a mystery about the theme park’s past but, taking Conner’s involuntary vocalizations in stride (literally) Aven drags him (figuratively) into an information-rich Tourette’s support group. Following poignant revelations about Aven’s birth family, the author lets warm but not gooey sentiment wash over the close to a tale that is not about having differences, but accepting them in oneself and others." —Booklist (starred review)★"Dusti Bowling's story of a regular, hugely likable kid who deals with her unusual challenges with grace and humor is pitch-perfect.” —Shelf Awareness (starred review)“Connor's Tourette's support-group meetings and Aven's witty, increasingly honest discussions of the pros and cons of "lack of armage" give the book excellent educational potential. . . . its portrayal of characters with rarely depicted disabilities is informative, funny, and supportive.” —Kirkus Reviews“Bowling’s sensitive and funny novel . . . demonstrates how negotiating others’ discomfort can be one of the most challenging aspects of having a physical difference and how friendship can mitigate that discomfort. . . . [an] openhearted, empathic book. —Publishers Weekly"A remarkable, original story with true heart, a fresh voice, and an absolutely unforgettable hero. It's a book sure to give any reader goosebumps, teary eyes, and out-loud laughs. It's a book that doesn't just open your eyes, it opens your heart." —Dan Gemeinhart, author of The Honest Truth

What a pleasant surprise! I bought this to give to our daughter for her 4th grade classroom library, but wanted to read it first. Aven, born without arms and adopted at age two, is gutsy, likable and very human. She's learned to do most of the things any kid would do by using her feet. Even so, moving from Kansas, where everyone is used to her lack of arms, to Arizona where her dad got a new job, creates a new set of fears and anxieties. How she deals with them, helps her parents turn a decrepit theme park around, solve a mystery and make new friends makes for a very satisfying read. It's going to be a great addition to my daughter's classroom library and deserves a place in many, many others.

Are you looking for a book like WONDER and Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper? Dusty Bowling's debut will satisfy your need. I am disappointed that RJ Palacio hasn't written anything new, but I am delighted I found this authentic book for middle school readers. The other reviewers give synopsis and insightful thoughts about this book. Stop reading the reviews and pick up this gem. I will follow Dusti Bowling and can't wait to see what she writes next!

I have a nephew with limb differences and we LOVED the book "Wonder" but this book is even better! It's a shorter read, great for 4th-8th grade audience. A must have for every family library. See the world through the eyes of an ABLE-bodies person, Aven (the main unarmed character) strives to show what she can do, not what she can't do or what she is lacking. And she helps a new friend with Tourette's syndrome change his outlook too. A great book about two differences/needs that not many people know about or books written about.

Aven was adopted by a wonderful family when she was two years old. She is a normal kid in every way...except one. She was born without arms. After moving to Arizona for her fathers job opportunity, Aven befriends a boy with Tourette's in her new middle school. Together they help each other in ways they never would have imagined.I feel in love with Aven's personality right away. I wish I could be like Aven. She is an inspiring character any parent would want their child to look up to. A must have for your home, classroom, or school library. Recommended for grades four and up.

This is one of those books that should be a mandatory read for middle school students, and it might open some eyes and minds in the high school age group as well. We gladly see more and more anti-bullying campaigns and feel the current overwhelming need for teaching compassion and acceptance of differences; Dusti is right on the mark with this great tale. Easy to read, engaging, heartwarming and full of encouragement for all. Reminded me very much of reading a Hardy Boys mystery when I was MUCH younger, where I couldn't wait to get to the end. The big difference is that not only was the very cleverly crafted mystery solved by the tenacious Aven, but a lesson of friendship, acceptance, encouragement and appreciation is the big prize. It would make a great story for reading to kids as well, allowing for open, on the spot discussion - Really loved it!

This book was amazing! Aven was born without arms. She moves to a new home in Arizona and has to find her way in a new school and with new friends who haven't grown up understanding and loving her. She makes two new friends who feel alone like she does, and somehow the world is less lonely. It's an incredible story of friendship, kindness, understanding, and compassion. Excited to share this story with my students!

Aven is a remarkable (and funny) character every reader will cheer for! After moving to Arizona, Aven makes friends with Connor, a young boy with Tourette's. These two make a dynamic duo, encouraging one another. What I was not expecting was the mystery at the amusement park this dynamic duo works together to solve. I loved this book and bought several copies for my 4th grade classroom. Highly recommend!

Super cute and well-written, page-turning book. The main character Aven is spunky and capable with the right amount of vulnerability. Living in Arizona, I immediately connected to the western-themed park where Aven lives. The beautiful cover art and positive message story made me decide it would be the perfect addition to my visitor's welcome baskets. Just added a little cactus and a few cactus candies and the presentation is all Arizona.

The book itself is not bad, but the technology described in it is VERY out of date and stale. This book is also available online for free on http://www.masonbook.com

I've worked on enough PHP and other lousy web code to have cringed when I read the title of this book: Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason. "No!" I cried, "don't cross the streams!" By the end of the book, I was feeling much more at ease (but I still cringe a little at that title).Mason is (though it seems debated) a cross between a lightweight application server and a very lightweight templating system. Requests go into Mason, which dispatches them to handlers and produces a response. The handlers and dispatch are simple but powerful: they use ideas object-oriented programming and allow the programmer to easily abstract and reuse code parts. It seems like a very powerful system, but its programmer-facing interface is fairly simple. The book walked through all the basic Mason concepts (request, autohandlers, dhandlers, components, methods, etc.) quickly, but with sufficient explanation and demonstration to make everything clear. Chapter 8 walked through the construction of a web and database application, using all the major features covered so far. The features had already been so clearly explained that I felt comfortable just skimming through the chapter. After that, the book began to cover some more esoteric concepts. Mason is made up of a number of classes: an interpreter, a lexer, a compiler, and a resolver. A programmer can write his own class to implement any of these components, changing the system to suit his whims. At the end of all this, I felt like I could really make Mason do a lot of cool things, and that it was a nice-sized solution for a lot of problems. (I still don't see myself actually /using/ Mason for anything, but now I know it's not so bad, and I know how to use it.) The book was well-written, had the right amount of depth, and was the right length for end-to-end reading. I'm glad I read it.

I am using Mason for about a year. Then I saw the Mason book. My first tought was: "Why should I buy a book about Mason - The online documentation is excellent...?".But even the introduction chapters of this book gives you new ideas how to get things done. Starting with the second half of chapter 4 every Masonsite developer should take a close look. He will find a in deep discussion about every Mason feature - and more (e.g. The Bricolage-CMS-Appendix).I my opinion there is no discussion "to buy or not to buy" this book. The only question is "when".On the one hand this book can be a bit boring for "new" Mason user and as mentioned before the online documentation is very good. On the other hand if you have your first mason-site done and read this book you will have very likely the urgent desire to rewrite some code. But this is a common perl problem: "There are many ways to get things done."I dislike the "Example" chapter. One of the big advantages of Mason is the possibility to seperate perl-code and HTML. This ist not very well done within the example-site.Conclusion: This book is not needed to get in touch with Mason althought usefull - but if you are really starting to deploy a site I strongly recommend this book.

Far from being just a reference, this book explains the conceptual framework behind Mason. The main idea of which is creating reusable components or building blocks to generate each element of your web site. This simple but powerful idiom is extremely useful in creating both small and very large dynamic web sites. The book is aimed at intermediate to advanced Perl programmers, although a bright beginner could pick the material up with a little help from the Mason community's very helpful mailing list. This book is not a tutorial. Instead, the authors devote a long chapter (chapter 8) to the analysis of a fully functional web app with full source code. I preferred this approach however because it helped me focus on the application as a whole rather than silly pedantic examples that lack context. Before reading this book, I had some experience working on a site that used a "home-brewed" templating system, but all the while I knew there had to be a better way. After reading through the first four chapters, I was able to build a rather sophisticated site and have been quite pleased with both Mason and this book. I fully recommend it.

But.. it is a little too short. Not really but I would have loved to have more book. The book covers just about every topic. I personally would have enjoyed to have more examples in each area. They made sure that there is at least on example for each topic. They even give some information about other competing products and about products that use Mason as it's base (for example Bircolage - I think I spelled that correctly). I am really glad the book to come out, it is a perfect addition to my collection of O'Reilly and Perl books. Thanks for a great book!

As a longtime mason user (2 years, private and commercial use) I didn't have to think about buying this book. Dave Rolsky and Ken Williams, both core developers, introduce you to the concepts behind HTML::Mason and its many features which really make the life of a web developer way easier.... Even if you're already familiar with mason this book will serve you as an excellent reference. If you haven't heard of mason yet and you're into web development and Perl is your language of choice you should also definitely have a look at this book and mason in general.

Apart from being clear and well-written, this book is also the sum of all the knowledge of the Mason community, written by two of the developers of Mason themselves. If you already use Mason, it's a must have.If you are new to Mason, try it first (it isn't difficult at all), then read the book. From my point of view this is an excellent technical book.

This is a good book. I had no idea about mason but helped me get right up to speed. Recommended for anyone who wants to get their foot in the door to learn mason.

I spent two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, and two years with the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Devens, MA at the same time that Alyce was there. The story is both a testament to the incredible individual survival skills, bravery, and indomitable spirit of a man who endured unspeakable torture and deprivation in captivity, and, at the same time a tragedy about the frailty and vulnerability of a man who came home and didn't understand or how to cope with being abandoned and betrayed by the two things he loved - his Army and his family - ironically the two anchors in his life that given him the strength to survive his captivity. You watch Jim Thompson slowly disintegrate, hoping that on the next page he'll finally be rescued and redeemed from his new prison, but you already know that he cannot help himself. This is the saddest book about the Vietnam War that I have ever read, and I could not put it down.

What an amazing man Jim Thompson was. How the Vietnam War and his long captivity changed his life and that of his family is a tragic read but one that I needed to read. I grew up during that time and went through those years with rose colored glasses. This book was an education for me.If ever a man deserved to be buried in the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery it should have been Floyd (Jim) Thompson. His love for this country knew no bounds. Why the Army denied Jim Thompson's request is beyond my comprehension. He also should have been awarded The Medal of Honor. We all owe Col. Jim Thompson and those that serve to protect our nation and our way of life a debt we will never be able to repay.

While I expected a story of resilience and courage about a man's survival in Vietnam as the longest held POW, this book is so much more. Instead of stopping the story as he got out of the plane to meet his family, the book tells the story of what happened after the happy picture as well. And it's not happy. The author manages to give authentic and honest voices to everyone involved, a cast of imperfect and rather normal people caught in a situation no one can prepare for. After surviving the impossible, Jim Thompson comes home expecting to find the family he had left behind, but what he finds is a group of strangers, betrayal and a world he can't recognize. He finds people who believe he fought for nothing. He finds a shift of values. What follows is the undoing of a family, told with so much heart one can feel the pain and reasons of every person presented in the book, even when they make mistakes.Overall, the book is about Thompson's two wars, the one in Vietnam and the one at home with his mind. A most powerful telling about the effects of war and most importantly about what happens behind the happy pictures

I was so deeply saddened by what consequences the men captured during the Vietnam War suffered. This book takes you deeply into the life of the longest held prisoner of war. I can't say I enjoyed it but I'm proud to have read about a man who gave so much for this country and didn't get what he should have come home to. I shouldn't judge his wife Alyce but I feel she had so much to do with the failure of her family, some may find that harsh but it's what I felt reading the story of a life that never recovered from the war and never received the recognition he deserved.

The first thing to understand is that this is written as an oral history, not the normal narrative type story. The story is told with the words from interviews with family, friends, associates and from Jim Thompson. I was impressed with how the story flowed and how the author was able to tie it all together. The story is about Jim Thompson, his time as a P..O. W.., his return to the U.S. and how his time as a prisoner tore his family and his future apart. This book shows how heroes aren't perfect and some aren't even what could be considered a good or nice person. A good book to read and a lesson that one can't live in the past and expect a bright future.

Col. Thompson 's life was one of a great man who withstood all the horrific brutality the viet cong and North Vietnam Army brought to bear on him. His life really never got much better after being released as the longest held POW during the vietnam war. An unfaithful wife, a son who committed a murder, alcohol consumption to the extreme, attempted suicide, suffered a disabling stroke and several other sad issues during a life I would not wish on any man. Through all of this I consider him a hero, deserving The Medal Of Honor, which he never received, but should have. A sad story written about in a book form which kept you wanting to turn to the next page as quickly as possible. I enjoyed it immensely and will forever remember who Col. Thompson was.

This book was written differently as oral history-so I had to get used to it but it was very well presented. It told of Jim Thompson's imprisonment as a POW during the Viet Nam war for 10 years and how it sadly affected not only his life but the lives of each of his family for years afterwards. I could not put it down. Great book. I highly recommend it.
