Review

“The most controversial book of the year.” —Guardian “Finkelstein’s downright pugilistic book delivers a wallop – mostly because few authors have had the courage or nerve to say, as he does, that the Nazi genocide has been distorted and robbed of its true moral lessons and instead has been put to use as ‘an indispensable ideological weapon.’ It’s a provocative thesis that makes you want to reject it even as you are compelled to keep reading by the strength of his case and the bravura of his assertions.” —LA Weekly “If his indictment is a true one, it should prompt prosecutions, sackings, protest. The book shouts scandal. It is a polemic, communicated at maximum volume.” —The Times“Finkelstein has raised some important and uncomfortable issues.” —Jewish Quarterly “Into this minefield, through which most have trodden perhaps a little too gingerly, has bust Norman Finkelstein, a Jew and a self-professed iconoclast, heretic and enemy of the American-Jewish establishment – and he is lobbing grenades.” —Spectator “A short, sharp, and copiously noted polemic.” —Times Higher Educational Supplement “Finkelstein is at his best when he skewers those who would sacralize the Holocaust.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “His basic argument that the memories of the Holocaust are being debased is serious and should be give its due.” —Economist “Clever, explosive, sometimes even wryly funny.” —Salon “This is, in short, a lucid, provocative and passionate book. Anyone with an open mind and an interest in the subject should ignore the critical brickbats and read what Finkelstein has to say.” —New Statesman“He deserves to be heard ... he is making some profound points that many younger and more thoughtful Jews have quietly been attempting to debate, but whose voices have been stilled by the establishment, particularly in the US.” —Evening Standard “Finkelstein should be credited for writing a well-researched book that can help shut down the Holocaust Industry when the public becomes aware of its dishonesty and its vulgar exploitation of Jewish suffering.” —Z Magazine“The reality of the Nazi holocaust remains. Memory can still enable us to recognise new victims, extend sensitivity and monitor signs of impending genocide. Books like The Holocaust Industry can help us if we let them.” —Red Pepper

The author, Norman Finkelstein, is a son of two Jewish parents who did in fact survive Nazi concentration camps. Norman Finkelstein must be credited as a truly brave man of great honesty and scholarship for writing this excellent and vitally important book. The book is amazingly thorough with seemingly endless references. It tells the story of how huge amounts of money have been extorted by major Jewish organizations in the name of “Holocaust Survivors” far in excess of legitimate claims. The vast majority of the money was then spent on lavish organizational facilities and high six figure executive salaries, with only a paltry fraction of the remainder going to the legitimate needy elderly Jewish survivors of concentration camps. The book particularly focuses on the shakedown of Swiss banks in the 1990s.Also told is the story of how public and historical conception of the massive persecution and killing of Jews, officially claimed to be as high as 5-6 million, in World War II evolved in the decades following the war. This gross atrocity went from being one of the many enormous horrific mass killings, in a war in which overall about 70 million people died, into being the singular, superlative and unquestionable crime against humanity committed during the war. Today the other 65 million people killed are almost forgotten in the popular memory. In the immediate years after the war, before the modern obsession with the Holocaust, when most people including the Jewish survivors were simply trying to recover their lives and put it behind them, the West German government was eager to provide relief to the Jewish survivors. The Germans handed out a significant, but not extravagant amount of relief money, that went to the actual survivors. In this era, even though many of the claimants were somewhat fraudulent, the claimants were generally at least Jews who had suffered in some way during the war. As the decades went on, the truly despicable “Holocaust Industry” of the major Jewish organizations grew into a monstrous shakedown operation.Read the book for all of the details and references to documentation.

A book that reveals the corruption that exploits Holocaust victims as well as Germans. The holocaust reparations scam has turned into a cash cow for selected influential Jewish lobby groups, leaving little or nothing for the survivors. The shake-down of Swiss banks is an embarrassment and disgrace to the United States, whose people are ill served by these hucksters and their political supporters in Washington . Shameful. It has all the blackmailing earmarks of the likes of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Well written. Finkelstein's sharp-tongued mother offers some blessed relief.

This whole story is of course by now 'dated'. At the time I read articles about it here and there, but this book brings it altogether and highlights the sheer arrogance of what Finkelstein calls organized American Judaism, but I prefer to call it organized American Zionism, as I distinguish between Judaism the religion and Zionism the political movement, even though the latter appears to have taken on religious overtones.

This is obviously a contentious work but it's well argued, thoroughly researched and exhaustively footnoted. I am definitely inspired to learn more about these topics. That the author has been pilloried in the US academic community only increases my suspicion that his claims are well founded.

A very thorough, almost exhaustive look into a 'highly' controversial topic. And the author's humor is surprisingly deadpan.

A lot of good research in this book. How unfortunate that a tragedy like the Holocaust was used for financial gain

Not bad. You may take issue with the book, but it does provide another side of the story.

Thoughtfully conceived and honestly presented facts and circumstances. It might hurt some feelings but there is no substitute for truth and honesty.
