I had never heard of Mallory Factor before coming across this book. People said so many good things about it last month that I felt the need to read it myself. I wasn't disappointed, not in the least. In 2010, I read a work that compared the actions of Soviet Union era apparatchniks to those of the union leaders here in the United States, and Shadowbosses is a fine conceptual companion piece for that book. Indeed, its far more expansive and thorough. The theme of the authors is that the union hierarchs (SEIU, NEA, UAW, AFL-CIO, etc) run leftist politicians today--not the other way around. They call the shots and drive the Democrats agenda. Never was this more evident than over the summer when the DNC turned to the unions to make up for the deficits they had in their funding: No unions, no convention. The unions made it happen. Factor wrote this book before that particular event, but hundreds of others are covered in these pages.Factor illustrates that when politicians don't do what the union wants--as Blanche Lincoln didn't in 2010--the unions back someone else and that candidate loses in the Democratic Party primary...which is precisely what happened to Lincoln. The behaviors of private sector unions are not our collective business, and if they succeed in breaking an industry there is not much we can do about it. The public sector unions are another matter altogether. We, the taxpayers, pay them, and often we pay them far more than we make ourselves. It's a complete scandal. There is no better statistic in this book than the one revealing that nearly 500,000 federal bureaucrats make over 100k a year in salary. That's outrageous. They're not public servants, but rather, public scammers. There's no reason to overpay them as they steal liberty from us, and any president who was serious about solving the budget crisis would lower the maximum federal wage to $74,000. This would allow all the lawyers and overlords we currently possess in the federocracy to "scratch buy" on a wage that's still far higher than most of us make.Overall, this book is outstanding. It's erudite and an inspiration. We, the people, are the ones who should run the country...not the Shadowbosses. Let's put some light on them, and free ourselves in the process.

Shadowbosses is a very well-written expose of government employee unions. This book exposes the control they have over the the political processes of our government, government policy and the damage they are causing. Reading this book is an eye opening experience. Shadowbosses should be a must-read for very conservative out there and every American that cares about our future.

Awesome read! I love to learn when I read non-fiction. This book was a real eye-opener. I was raised in a union household and I am still pro-union. This book was full of information that all need to know, especially union members. They are being screwed over big-time by union management and they don't even know it. Politicians are under the thumbs of union management and we are all paying the price. I recommend everyone buy this book before the next election.

It helped me to understand just what unions are about. I have always been for the unions, but it has left the people and just doingwhat it takes to wield power which also includes money. They pretty much spend as the upper boys and girls see fit. It will take thepeople to put them back in their place.Their pockets fit nicely in the democrats pockets.

This is a timely description of a problem in governance which can no longer be ignored. In an era when politicians' at every level are kicking financial cans down the road into our children's future, the inconvenient truth that unionized government employees enjoy compensation, benefits, privileges, and job security far in excess of comparable jobs held by taxpayers presents an unsustainable problem. Having lived through hyper-inflation in Argentina and other Southern Cone countries during the 1970s and early 1980s, I have seen where this problem of unaffordable government leads. The author exposes the emerging, largely unavoidable and widespread government bankruptcies, including the federal. The author makes clear how our constitutional government has been corrupted by the vicious circle of government employees circumventing the Hatch Act's prohibitions on their striking and political involvement to elect politicians who will return the favor by continuing the lavish compensation and work rules. The author also exposes the fact that public employees have found union leaders willing to exploit this corruption of constitutional self-governance.

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up{amp}mdash;Hannah Gold knows that there has been a terrible misunderstanding. She spent an enjoyable several weeks at a college summer program in California, where she formed a tight friendship with her roommate, Agnes. Now she is being carefully monitored and denied basic privileges at a high security institution. While she goes through the events of the past few weeks in her head, she tries to make sense of the tragic accident that sent Agnes falling two stories to the concrete below their dorm window. Although Hannah had been secretly seeing Agnes's boyfriend, Jonah, she knows that she would never have done anything to harm Agnes physically. Through conversations with her therapist, brief interactions with other inmates, and constant internal dialogue, Hannah analyzes her privileged childhood as an only child of wealthy parents in New York City, and wonders if she is not the person she always thought she was. Sheinmel creates an intensely likable unreliable narrator. Hannah's voice is convincingly realistic, highlighting the subtle nuances that make up the thought processes of a troubled teenager. Though the novel centers on the theme of mental illness and its devastating consequences, it is fully engaging and manages to avoid being too gloomy. The author's beautiful prose strikes a perfect balance between serious emotion and humorous dialogue. VERDICT A thrilling page-turner and worthy choice for high school libraries.{amp}mdash;Karin Greenberg, Manhasset High School, Manhasset, NY

Great book got my attention right off the bat

my granddaughter wanted this book for her birthday

Hannah is locked up, Four walls, one window, one door but no way out. She is " A Danger to Herself and Others" , has been deemed so by a doctor , and must stay in the institution until she is evaluated and has an opportunity to explain herself in court. She knows she doesn't belong here, it was all an accident, a mistake, her roommate fell, that's all., and once she convinces the therapist, and the judge, she'll be able to go back to her real life, surviving her senior year in high school and preparing for college. Isolated and angry, she is not at all welcoming to Lucy, the new girl who shares her room at the institution, but soon she is using her charm and persuasive skills to make a new best friend, one who may be able to help her get what she wants- her freedom. This is an excellent contemporary YA book, with great, if unlikeable characters, especially the narrator Hannah, who is the definition of an unreliable narrator, ready to spin every story to her own advantage , determined to make everyone like her, and completely unwilling to take responsibility for anything . The claustrophobic setting really adds to the feeling of tension and isolation that permeates the book, almost all of the story takes place within the institution, with some flashbacks to the events that led to Hannah ending up there , and the author does an incredible job of portraying how trapped Hannah feels, almost to the point that I started to feel a little uncomfortable while reading. It's very difficult to say much more without spoiling the book , and it would be a shame to do that, as it is easily one of the best books I have read in quite some time. It's powerful, tense, surprising, uncomfortable and at times heartbreaking ,and I cannot recommend it highly enough.I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa B. Sheinmel is an intriguing young adult novel.Seventeen year old Hannah Gold is certain she has been placed in a mental institution by mistake. She had nothing to do with her roommate and friend Agnes Smith’s accidental fall out of a window. But Agnes’ parents are convinced she is guilty of harming their daughter, so a judge orders Hannah into an institution for further evaluation. At first, Hannah refuses to discuss anything of value with her therapist, Dr. Lightfoot. However, the arrival of her roommate Lucy Quintana is a turning point for Hannah as she finally realizes that in order to earn “privileges”, she has to be honest with Dr. Lightfoot. With Hannah divulging the events that occurred in the weeks preceding Agnes’s accident, Dr. Lightfoot makes a shocking diagnosis that completely upends Hannah’s view of herself. And with the hearing into her role in what happened to Agnes and Hannah’s reunion with her parents fast approaching, is she prepared for how everyone will react to her unexpected diagnosis?Hannah is an extremely intelligent, high achieving only child. Her parents have always treated her as an adult, so she is quite mature and very composed. Hannah is very fixated on not falling behind in school but Dr. Lightfoot wants her to concentrate on her therapy. Initially, Hannah is positive that she did not harm Agnes, but after she is placed under observation, self-doubts begin to creep in. But why would she have wanted to harm her best friend?Lucy’s arrival provides Hannah with a distraction from her own problems. The two girls hit it off fairly quickly and they are soon swapping stories and finding ways to pass the time. Once Hannah realizes Lucy has earned privileges that provide her with a modicum of freedom, she becomes more open with Dr. Lightfoot. But will her gradual self-awareness prepare Hannah for the doctor’s diagnosis?A Danger to Herself and Others is a thought-provoking young adult novel with a somewhat unreliable narrator. The majority of the story takes place mainly in Hannah’s room at the institution so it is easy for readers to empathize with her as she tries to come to terms with her current situation. Despite a bit of repetition, the storyline is interesting and the characters are relatively well-developed. Hannah comes across as a typical teenager, so Dr. Lightfoot’s diagnosis will catch readers off guard. Alyssa B. Sheinmel deftly handles the subject of mental illness with sensitivity and provides insight into a misunderstood disease. An engaging young adult novel that I recommend to older teen and adult readers.I received a complimentary copy for review.

It's really difficult to write a spoiler free review of this book, so rather than focus on the story elements I'm going to focus on my thoughts and feelings as a reader.First, could it be any creepier? I love the unreliable narrator aspect - and I've rarely seen it executed this well. Hannah is very easy for me to connect and sympathize with. She has a lot of anxiety and coping mechanisms in place throughout the book that honestly seem pretty reasonable. Counting steps? Sure. Not hurting anyone by counting steps. I think that's why I was so blown away by the book. We see everything through Hannah's perspective and she's a worthy narrator. The masterful storytelling is something that has me really excited to share "A Danger to Herself and Others" with my readers. April Henry fans will devour this book. Heck, I would read it again! (And I'm known for NOT re-reading books.) It's suspenseful, nothing comes out of left field without justification, and just...beautiful. Beautifully written. Finally, that ending... I wanted to pull Hannah to me and hug her myself. Her parents were so distant and aloof that I could barely stand it. The author doesn't cave to my need to know Hannah is going to be alright. She lets it dangle in front of me without succumbing to the trend to put a pretty bow on every ending - especially when dealing with mental illness. I am thrilled that this book is in my library's collection and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
