Reading Chomsky's work, I've been amazed at how much I couldn't discern that's been laid out in plain view. Kudos to the editor for wonderfully organizing transcripts of Chomsky's Q&A sessions and making this book.Chomsky shares his views across a multitude of topics, and most of his views are backed up in the footnotes, which makes for compelling truth. Some of the interesting themes include American foreign and domestic policy, the propaganda system, function of schools, third world governance and fraud of modern economics. It's nearly impossible to summarize all of Chomsky's insights in the book but one thing has been consistent - his brutal, no nonsense, honesty. One of the quotes that gives you the gist of it:"According to a study by O.E.C.D. about a half of a trillion dollar of drug money gets laundered internationally every year - more than half of it through American banks. How many bankers are in jail? None. But if a black kid gets caught with a joint, he goes to jail."This book is certainly not for the faint of hearted, but it's a much needed wake up call.

10 stars for one of the most life-changing, perspective altering books I've read. I will work through it at least once more to take detailed notes. With eloquence and encyclopedic knowledge of the social, economic, and political system in America and abroad, Chomsky pulls back the curtain on the machinations of power in all its forms to reveal at its core a horrid creed of greed for a few at the expense of health, dignity, and life for the many."The 'masters of mankind,' as [Adam Smith] called them, will do what they can to in order to follow the 'vile maxim': 'all for ourselves and nothing for anyone else.'" The entire book is really an expurgation of this thesis. Of course, this is nothing new in history, but as we see in the book, the interconnectedness of the world and the unprecedented levels of inequity and abuse are ripping civilization apart.Every year, an American president presents a rosy State of the Nation address. With well-documented facts, Chomsky paints a starkly different picture: society is crashing, and, in the 11th hour, it's up to the people to wake up and take collective action before it's too late.

Great introduction to Noam Chomsky's work. This book covers the breath of Noam's topics over the years, giving you a summary of each topic that he has written about over his lifetime. If you have been curious about his writings but are not wanting to dive into one topic in particular, this is the book for you. You can always go back and buy his expanded work on a specific area later.

One of the reasons you don't hear about Noam Chomsky on mainstream media is because they could never keep up with him. His mental prowess; his deep research; his heavily-cited (and credible, because I check citations of all books I read) works; all come together to present to us one of the great thinkers and writers of our time. Instead of the pablum and poop we are fed from the agendaed TV personalities and ghost written idealogical pamphlet books we get, Chomsky takes thinking to read it. I highly recommend him to anyone who really wants to know what's really going on.

This Q & A format extracted from several discussions with NC is clearly taken from a select audience of sympathetic persons. But the questions are relevant and the replies provided, while not always those one might expect, are always well considered and backed by an extensive array of background information and footnotes. The power elite and their indoctrinated minions will predictably not like most of what is being said. But NC clearly did not become a PhD on the faculty of MIT by saying stupid things. He is a genius at being able to state his case in simple terms so that the layman can understand the fundamentals. It’s not “fancy”; it just plain correct. The relationship of language, propaganda, and the art of omission of inconvenient facts is discussed quite a lot parenthetically but is developed in much more detail. (That is in fact NCs formal qualification He needs no “qualifications” however to state his educated opinion.) Those topics are developed in more detail in other writings by NC.The perceived roles of owners, investors, speculators, the (USA) government, the military, unions, and various other “classes” of workers are explored and described in great detail and with incite and clarity. And the relationship of the USA to the rest of the world is also made quite explicitly; although not in a very complimentary manner. This perspective was a revelation to this reader and one which can be used to place events and actions into a context which is not the standard “party line”.

Amazon.com Review

Journalist Mark Bowden delivers a strikingly detailed account of the 1993 nightmare operation in Mogadishu that left 18 American soldiers dead and many more wounded. This early foreign-policy disaster for the Clinton administration led to the resignation of Secretary of Defense Les Aspin and a total troop withdrawal from Somalia. Bowden does not spend much time considering the context; instead he provides a moment-by-moment chronicle of what happened in the air and on the ground. His gritty narrative tells of how Rangers and elite Delta Force troops embarked on a mission to capture a pair of high-ranking deputies to warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid only to find themselves surrounded in a hostile African city. Their high-tech MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters had been shot down and a number of other miscues left them trapped through the night. Bowden describes Mogadishu as a place of Mad Max-like anarchy--implying strongly that there was never any peace for the supposed peacekeepers to keep. He makes full use of the defense bureaucracy's extensive paper trail--which includes official reports, investigations, and even radio transcripts--to describe the combat with great accuracy, right down to the actual dialogue. He supplements this with hundreds of his own interviews, turning Black Hawk Down into a completely authentic nonfiction novel, a lively page-turner that will make readers feel like they're standing beside the embattled troops. This will quickly be realized as a modern military classic. --John J. Miller

From Publishers Weekly

This is military writing at its breathless best. Bowden (Bringing the Heat) has used his journalistic skills to find and interview key participants on both sides of the October 1993 raid into the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia, a raid that quickly became the most intensive close combat Americans have engaged in since the Vietnam War. But Bowden's gripping narrative of the fighting is only a framework for an examination of the internal dynamics of America's elite forces and a critique of the philosophy of sending such high-tech units into combat with minimal support. He sees the Mogadishu engagement as a portent of a disturbing future. The soldiers' mission was to seize two lieutenants of a powerful Somali warlord. Despite all their preparation and training, the mission unraveled and they found themselves fighting ad hoc battles in ad hoc groups. Eschewing the post facto rationalization that characterizes so much military journalism, Bowden presents snapshots of the chaos at the heart of combat. On page after page, in vignette after vignette, he reminds us that war is about breaking things and killing people. In Mogadishu that day, there was no room for elaborate rules of engagement. In the end, it was a task force of unglamorous "straight-leg" infantry that saved the trapped raiders. Did the U.S. err by creating elite forces that are too small to sustain the attrition of modern combat? That's one of the key questions Bowden raises in a gripping account of combat that merits thoughtful reading by anyone concerned with the future course of the country's military strategy and its relationship to foreign policy. Book Project Critical ReviewJames EguesBlack Hawk Down, written by Mark Bowden, a journalist, tells a story about a group of American Soldiers that were sent into Somalia on a humanitarian mission authorized by George Bush in 1992. Several of the helicopters, Black Hawks, that they brought with them into the mission were shot down and the crews were mutilated by a local militia. Every time a Black Hawk crashed, a brutal firefight broke out, resulting in deaths and injuries of American soldiers. The rescue team could not land to get the group because of local Somalis. The mission was overall a failure, the mission’s death toll was one thousand of Somalis and nineteen American Soldiers. and at the end of the book, soldiers are celebrating the return of Michael Durant, who was the pilot for the Super Six One Black Hawk. Michael Durant was the only survivor from the Super Six One group. Bowden’s work was an overall success because of his journalist writing style, point of view of the events, and organization of the story line.As I was reading, I fell into the book and could not stop reading. It felt as if I was really there in the setting of the book. The style Mark Bowden used to write the book made me fall in love with the story. The writing brings out great visualization for the reader, making them feel like they are in the book with. Journalistic writing has a more exciting feel to it rather than classic novelistic writing. I feel as if classic novels are more creative and have more visualization rather than journalistic writing, and I love how Black Hawk Down has that journalistic feel to it. Journalistic writing is usually more putting words on paper for the reader to be able to easily read and understand what is going on. I enjoy this because it is straightforward and can have good visualization and novelistic writing is more creative and the author has more time to write their book. They can easily put together a picture with words for the reader. The style of writing made me pay more attention to the book and I felt very interested in what was going on. I could not stop myself from reading and every chance I got, I would read the book. When reading a classic novelistic book, I feel like I am reading the book for class, however when I read a journalistic book, I feel free and enjoy reading the book.I enjoyed the different points of views Mark Bowden used throughout the book. Every other chapter or so, The point of view would change from the view of the soldiers to the view of local Somalis. It portrayed the difference between the two sides. It showed how an event could have a completely different effect on one side than the other. It helped me understand the different opinions and struggles between the two angles. It added some knowledge to the book and taught me somethings about the struggles the two groups faced. Everything the soldiers did had an impact on the Somalis, and everything the Somalis did had an impact on the soldiers. When a fight broke out it spanned across multiple chapters of the book and then switched to another perspective and continued onto some more chapters under that perspective. I thought this was helpful and very interesting. The organization of the story line was neat and looked clean. The book was split into a couple different sections, The Assault, and Black Hawk Down and more. The book starts with The Assault and follows with Black Hawk Down and continues with a couple more. I thought this was cool and organized. Chapters were short and chronological. Because the chapters were so short, there were tons of chapters. I did not like that feature, but other than the length of the chapters, everything was fine. Each chapter was tightly packed with dialogue and action. There were very few chapters that were not containing action and or dialogue between characters. I thought this was fun to read and helped me stay interested in the book. All in all, I loved the book Black Hawk Down, by Mark Bowden. I thought it was the perfect mixture of action and a sad story. Bowden’s work was an overall success because of his journalist writing style, point of view of the events, and organization of the story line. I loved the journalistic writing feel to the book. I enjoyed reading this book overall because I could not stop reading. I was attached to the book because of its writing style and the action. The different points of view from the soldiers and the Somalis surprised me and was very interesting. I thought the organization of the storyline was very neat and clean. I especially liked how the book was split into two parts. I would love to recommend Black Hawk Down to anyone who loves an action packed, war themed, sad story.

Bowden's book is written in the kind of language you would expect from a traditional journalist. He is clear, concise, and does not bog his language down in artistic flourish. In fact, in his Afterward he claims to be proud of this straightforwardness with the reader; this despite it garnering him a slight barb from one particular reviewer he mentions. However, it must be said that the structure of the book is a little messy. The number of individuals whose points of view Bowden includes can be daunting to sift through. I did not even bother to count the POVs he puts down on paper, but the reader should be aware there is no centralized perspective to go back to for reference. The author does not inject himself into the story (e.g. "And then I interviewed this person who said..."), and ordinarily that is fine. But, with a book showcasing the perspectives of so many people -- from lowly soldiers, to the their families, to commanders, to politicians -- it is difficult to sort through who is who and why any particular person is relevant. What makes it worse is that Bowden doesn't really offer any breaks for a reader to register a transition from one person's POV to another. Unfortunately, this problem hampers the flow of the story as the reader, at times, may be forced to backtrack just to refresh his or her memory on who is who. To be fair, Bowden interviewed countless individuals and wanted to give a good many of them their due. I have no doubt he left out many of POVs despite deep reservation. Still, none of this matters if the reader is not discouraged by such things. I was still able to jog through the book at a brisk and enjoyable pace in spite of this road block.Another important note: this book corresponds poorly with the eponymous movie. The reader will find many of the characters in the movie are composites of actual people Bowden describes in the book. Not to mention the movie glosses over some of the uglier aspects of war (e.g. in the book, Bowden writes the U.S. Rangers eventually start shooting anything and everything in their path, including a large number of unarmed civilians). So, if you are ready for a dose of reality, read the book and drop your jaw.

I like medical narrative non-fiction, and this is solid, fun, and informative work. I enjoyed the stories being framed through the doctor's letters to his brother. It offered a whimsical tone and closeness we might have missed had he written to the world. His stories are fun and often exciting, and his self-effacing style is refreshing among physician authors. Anyone interested in ER work (or who has ever been to an ER) will enjoy and learn from this book. Well done.

The book is a compelling read taking you into the private world of a physicians mind and the ER where he works. Uniquely presented as a first person narrative you feel as though you are right there with him watching while he works, sometimes making life saving decisions, sometimes not. The stories are well written, compelling and structured to intrigue the imagination of both medical and non-medical providers. And the ultimate challenge for all emergency care providers is revealed; the challenge to separate a patients tragedy from their own personal life while maintaining the empathy necessary for providing the best care. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I recommend it highly for all audiences.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Crocker for 15 years. When I first met him, he intimidated me like crazy! As time passed, I earned respect from him and gained so much respect for him, and I can still call him friend to this day. He always kept his composure, no matter the situation. His standards were high, and after reading this book, I now see his heart for emergency medicine in a way I never did before. I honestly have no idea if I was involved in any of the cases he presents. However, the letters to Jack are written in such a way, that I felt like I was there for every one of them. I could see the scenario and feel the emotion of all of it. They are such an accurate depiction of what it is like to work in the ER and work with PC. Somehow, you always find a way to move on and help the next person, no matter what you just left. Not all things end happy, like a Hollywood movie. Dr. Crocker's raw emotion in the stories is written so well. Thanks for being so candid and putting this collection together! -- ST

This book will capture your interest and keep you reading to the very last page. It is written so anyone can understand the stories Dr Crocker has chosen to share. I had the privilege of working aoongside Dr Crocker for many years. He is one of the best ER docs and has an amazing writing ability. Thanks PC for the trip down memory lane. I am anxiously awaiting the next book.

This was very interesting format and I liked it. It kept the book rolling and not bogged down. It takes a special man to choose this “specialty.” Your empathy and care is refreshing in this age of tech medicine. And it is a special field. It’s as if you don’t have to think things through. Rush headlong into a treatment without considering the consequences of being wrong. Thank you PC.

As an ex nurse but not in emergency medicine I always enjoy non-fiction hospital stories. Patrick Crocker writes well and displays empathy for his patients. I didn’t care for the ‘letter’ format, irritating and unnecessary. The vignettes sit well on their own and I found the Dear Jack at the start of each chapter distracting. One thing that made me gasp, and it has nothing to do with the author or the writing is in a chapter Dr Crocker writes about the large, locked drug dispensing machine that can only be accessed by inputting the patient’s insurance details. For a person from a country (New Zealand) with a social welfare system where access to healthcare is available AND THE SAME for all residents of the country be they poor or wealthy, I find the US healthcare system bewildering and inhumane. Sure, our system is a long way from perfect and being able to afford private health insurance speeds things up, but in acute cases everyone is equal.

One of the best medical nonfiction books i have read. Loved the format. Medicine today needs more Dr. Crockers. Please write another book!

As we find ourselves in the midst of what many people view as a healthcare crises, it is refreshing to read an honest, humanizing, first-hand account of the tribulations in the ER. Empathy, often lacking in healthcare, stands out in this series of personal vignettes shared by Dr. Crocker. An excellent book that definitely leaves the reader yearning for more. If only we could clone your brilliance, passion, empathy and understanding Dr. Crocker!

I read the entire book, just waiting for an explanation of why the plane crashed. Who was behind it? Why did they do it? No answers. It was like the entire series of Lost. There was minimal character development and the "aha" moment of who was helping Houdini was simply gratuitous. Sure, the book moved along at a good pace but there was no story arc. It felt like the publisher forgot to include the first two chapters or the last two chapters. This book came highly recommended but I cannot recommend it.

Besides the totally implausible story lines (you can't jump from a crashing plane to save yourself - and surely, neighbors/teachers/somebody would have noticed a small child suddenly living with a deranged derelict), the rest of this book can be summarized as follows: killing, fighting, stabbing, shooting, punching, explosions, vomit, car crashes, fart jokes, blood, dropped guns skittering across the floor, more killing. And everybody has a cliché nickname. I thought I was lost in an action movie geared for 16-year-old boys.

This is the most poorly written novel that I have read in several years. Brad Meltzer’s writing style is sophomoric at best. His character development is weak. After reading two-thirds of the book, I have a tough time visually picturing the main characters...actually any of the characters in the book. The story line is overly simplistic, yet often relies on impossible outcomes. Houdini gets shot in the esophagus, yet somehow gets away? Wouldn't the bullet severe the spinal cord on the way out? Caesar gets shot by a gun pressed to the back of his head and somehow miraculously not only later crawls to his office, but is able to later speak to Zig and look him in the eyes. A bullet from a gun placed at the back of his head would expand and take his eyes and face with it as it exited the front. The storyline is predicated on unrealistic outcomes and undermines the veracity of the tale.I found it difficult to continue reading because I was constantly questioning the premise of the storyline.Unfortunately, this book is so poorly written that after a month of picking it up and reading a chapter or two I just couldn’t finish it. Hard to believe that this is a #1 best selling author? Give me DeMille, Sanford, Silva, Connolly, Kellerman (not Faye), Childs, Lescroart, Burke, Grisham...need I continue?

I gave it two simply because there actually WERE a couple of paragraphs that sounded rather profound. Otherwise this is the kind of story you would have expected to be written in the 1930's or 40'sas the screenplay for a really bad B-Movie. The kind that would be part of a Saturday matinee double-feature, at best. More likely it would never leave the Drive-In theater Double Feature night. It is simply embarrassingly awful!

This is definitely a page turner! I couldn't stop reading, every moment I could spare! A mortician working for the military on our fallen heroes pours his heart and soul to his work. He comes across a soldier who was vitally important in his daughter's younger years. But wait a minute...is it her?!?Brad Meltzer always finds a way to make characters critical to his stories deep and rich enough to make you feel you know them. The way Nola was unfolded, one layer at a time, masterful! Allowing you to absorb one major development at a time.

I thought there was a nice surprise at the end of this book so I kept on reading. Nope! This is the only Brad Meltzer book I didn’t really understood’ I had no idea what the story line was. No idea what the relevance of Houdini and Blue Book. I finished the book not understanding what the whole story was! And that is so weird! Wasted money on this book!!!

I found this book a little hard to believe with the main characters as mentally damaged as the appeared. I thoroughly enjoyed the description of th Delaware army base and its treatment of the fallen soldiers of our country. The precision and intricate detail of the country's morticians is admirable. The characters were interesting as to their respective jobs the carried out. Overall not a great book but not a bad one either.

This, for me, was an unusual book. A page-turner, to be sure, but not the cookie-cutter brand of thriller novels I’m used to enjoying. For starters, the two protagonists in the plot are anything but the kind of heroes I’m used to seeing. One, a mortician who keeps bees on the side, is a 50+ year old sad man with a killer sense of humour. The second is a tough-as-nails young girl who has seen more than her share of the ugly side of life.As the tale of greed and graft progresses, we get to see the girl’s backstory; about how she got to be the person she is.All of it - the plot and subplot - is engaging and provocative. I heard a hard time putting this book down.

Enjoyed the story but just couldn't get past the numerous editing errors. I really enjoy this author's work, but I'm reaching my limit on the number of editing errors always to be found, especially in this novella. There were instances of multiple errors on a page and just using spellchecker isn't cutting it. Just as an author expects to be paid for their work, as the consumer, I expect the quality in the purchased product as well as respect for the readers. I shouldn't have to decipher what word or words should have been used in a sentence. The stars were deducted because of this constant and recurring issue.

Wow! This is off the damn chain! Blue has done it again and let me say it was definitely worth the wait! This tells all that was going on behind the scenes with Nelson and Talina; how strong Detra’s and Nelson’s friendship is. Also, we see more of what makes Detra Nelson’s badass right-hand!Cristóbal and Detra are a sexual inferno and Cristóbal isn’t going to let her keep running from their love. It’s good to see Detra almost vulnerable and discombobulated at Cristóbal’s changing their agreement and in denial about her love for him.Not sure who the woman is that’s gone or who may or may not have Malcom but I know that with Cristóbal, Detra, Nelson and Talina, things are just getting started!

Do you have one click authors? Blue Saffire is most definitely on my one click list and this book is another reason why. Although it’s just a novella, it is just as satisfying as her other books. I love that the heroine is a strong character that doesn’t need saving. She doesn’t allow her attraction for the hero to leaver her senseless but you can still feel the heat between them. It was nice to catch up with Nelson and Talia and get some answers to their story and I can’t wait to connect the rest of the dots when Manny and Gabriella’s story comes out. Keep them coming Ms. Saffire, your coming soon list has my one click finger very itchy!

So for me this was just an okay read and maybe it was because of all the grammatical errors and misspelled words I encountered. This caused the story for me to keep getting sidelined because I was trying to figure out what was supposed to be said or going on at that point. With that being said Cristo was truly an Alpha out to seize his love and the woman that stirred that desire in him.

As all of Blue's books, her h is always a strong caring woman. I cannot say enough how much I appreciate that. I am glad Detra got her own story, she was so cool in Funny Valentine. Cristo' was her perfect match. Loved him and his flexibility in knowing Detra needed her independence. The only issue I had was the editing. Not used to bad editing from Blue. Great read otherwise.

More please!!Damn, badass meet badass made a deal , get married... In love with each other without knowing it or even admit to themselves. Wow! That kind of describing Detra and Cristobál... Stubborn asses! This is a great read, grab a copy and enjoy the journey of Cristó & Detra and reacquainted yourself with Talina and Nelson. Can't wait for Manny and Gabriella.

Older man younger woman romance with some mob type stuff, which I like. The couple got married but love didn't come until much later. Although there were some editing issues I still enjoyed it

But I'm not used to such bad editing from Blue Sapphire. Misspelled words really distracted me from what should have very been a fantastic story. I'm not used to such poor quality from an author who is always on my short list. I'll keep reading your work; but you are going to back to bringing your "A" game.
