Globalization, Spirituality & Justice (Rev Ed) (Theology in Global Perspective) (Tgp-Theologoy of Global Perspective)

Review

In breath-taking scope, Daniel Groody has done what we might think impossible, to write something fresh, demanding, and generative on the theme of justice... He reaches beyond Catholic social teaching, cites parallel teaching in other world religions, and focuses upon enfleshed models of risk, obedience, and generosity. --Walter Brueggemann

Every Christian, Protestant or Catholic needs to read this book, a blend of prescriptive social mandates and reflective liturgical ideals. In an age of much confusion, globalized violence and disparity between the rich and poor Groody helps the reader self-reflect while motivating al of us to actually do something for the Kingdom. I'm grateful for his book.

Groody is an engaging writer with much insight. I loved his book and I can't wait to read more books written by him. He challenged me to think outside the box. The seller was prompt in service and the book was in great condition when I received it.

This is an excellent book that gives a comprehensive review of the tradition of Catholic Social Teaching: biblical roots, patristics, development of the body of specific teachings called Catholic Social Teaching, the sacramental basis for living these principles and liberation theology - what it really is. A necessary read and shelf reference for anyone trying to live with social justice in a global world and develop their spirituality for such. Very readable - no jargon.

I find the book very informative and spiritually grounded on scriptures

I used his chapter on liberation theology to explain the concept to my high school class, it was so succinct.

This is a required text for a course I am taking. It is not easy reading and, it proposes positions with which I have philosophical differences. That being said, it is what I needed.

"This book may take our breath away." So states the cover blurb from Walter Brueggemann on "Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice: Navigating the Path to Peace," released on April 17, 2007 by Daniel G. Groody. The basic premise is, metaphorically, that the global family has booked passage and is now aboard the ship of globalization and there is no turning back to the shore. The question we must ask ourselves, as passengers on this ship, is, "who is at the helm and where are we going?" As Gustavo Gutierrez quips, "Being against globalization is like being against electricity." We can't stop the ship, and one would question the wisdom of wanting to, but the issues of who's driving and where will we end up are legitimate. The book begins by offering an overview of the dual nature of globalization--its inherent propensity for good, such as the triumphs of technology, and for ill, such as the tragedy of poverty. Perhaps more importantly, chapter one details where we have sailed on this ship so far. This chapter seeks to give a realistic picture of the world today and paints that picture by using the most current statistics available. These statistics were gathered from sources such as the World Bank, the United Nations annual Human Development and World Development reports, and the World Institute for Development Economic Research. It is staggering to learn that 19 percent of the global population lives on less than $1 per day, 48 percent live on less than $2 per day, 75 percent live on less than $10 per day, and, according to the World Bank, two-thirds of the population of the planet lives in poverty. The weight of these income disparities is compounded when one looks at the unequal distribution of wealth and our disordered spending patterns. According to an article in the December 2006 issue of "The Economist," half of all wealth is held by only 2 percent of the world's adults. The world spends almost as much money on toys and games as the poorest 20 percent of the population earns in a year, and four times as much on alcohol as on international development aid. The troubling area of military spending is also addressed. The world picture, from the perspective of poverty and need is indeed bleak, but Professor Groody does not leave us in the grip of its reality with no hope. He is convinced that, while fully aware of the abuses committed in the name of religion throughout history, the gift theology can bring to the process of globalization is a navigation system that has the potential to guide us to a place of solidarity and peace, where if globalization is left to itself or to those leaders who are only motivated by profit we may run aground on the icebergs of greed. As Groody notes, we are doing theological reflection all the time, but he argues that to find a place of human solidarity we must undergo a conversion from "money-theism" to monotheism. The remaining eight chapters of the book deal with how the various sub-disciplines of theology inform the process of globalization.* Chapter two details the core narratives of the Bible--the Narrative of the Empire, the Narrative of the Poor, the Narrative of Yahweh, the Narrative of Idolatry, and the Narrative of the Gospel, integrating them all with the Narrative of the Passover.* Chapter three challenges idolatry and excessive wealth through the words of the early church writers.* Chapter four lays out an overview of Catholic social teaching with an acronym ("A God of Life") that provides a framework on which to hang the basic tenets. There are also several very useful charts that detail the documents of the universal and regional churches by categories of year, author, context, and key concept.* Chapter five consists of a short section (five or six pages) on the basic social teachings of each of the major, non-Judeo-Christian, world religions--Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Bahai Faith, and African Indigenous religions. Here we see that social justice is not unique to Christianity.* In chapter six the lives of five contemporary models of justice are briefly chronicled: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa, and Oscar Romero. Attention is paid especially to their foundational experiences, the major metaphor of their life, their operative theology, and their core contribution to justice.* Chapter seven reflects on God through the perspective of the poor by looking at liberation theology and the preferential option for the poor. This chapter is an especially helpful read for anyone who wishes to understand what is meant by these two terms and the position of the Vatican on liberation theology. The global perspective is readily apparent again in this chapter as attention is paid to Black, Hispanic, Feminist, and Asian liberation theology.* Chapter eight concerns the rite of the liturgy, and justice as living in right relationships with God, self, others, and the environment. This chapter also has several nice charts that are helpful in linking the sacraments to social teaching by way core issue.* The final chapter on spirituality and transformation beautifully sums up the book by looking to the spiritual disciplines which can strengthen us for doing the work of justice in the world: fasting, prayer, community, solidarity, nature, simplicity, recollection, and Sabbath. Each chapter begins with a relevant story, and ends with a set of questions that would be helpful for personal reflection, group discussion, or classroom use, and a detailed bibliography for further reading and study.I recommend Globalization, Spirituality, and Justice for upper level undergrads and graduate students in theology, peace studies, political science, ethics and justice, and economics and business, as well as justice groups, and the general reader interested in this vital and timely topic. Groody has managed to research and write a compelling treatise on global injustice without conveying a bleak and hopeless message. At its core, this book seeks to respond to the deeper issues of the human heart that globalization has largely left unexplored--questions related to belonging and loneliness, good and evil, peace and division, healing and suffering, meaning and meaninglessness, hope and despair, love and apathy, justice and injustice, freedom and slavery, and ultimately life and death. He is not interested in overwhelming readers with guilt, but rather with guiding readers to examine our personal and corporate lives and motivations, all the while encouraging us to think beyond ourselves to the needs of our brothers and sisters in the global family. The book is clear and well documented, exquisitely written, and sings a wonderful melody of the gratuitousness of God that is both a gift to and a demand on our lives.

Truly excellent work. This book addresses how to be christian in todays world. Thought provoking and very well researched. Great for a book group with discussion questions at the end of each chapter. I have already recommended this book to many.

Almost 25 years have passed since I first read Lost Souls. Surprisingly, it stood the test of time – more or less. Lost Souls is a kitschy, gritty, fairly original, character driven, ensemble vampire tale. It starts off with the “teenaged” Vampire Trio of Zillah, Molochai and Twig rolling into New Orleans, drinking, drugging, screwing and stuffing their faces with Hostess cakes and “champagne, whipped cream, kidneys, chocolate truffles and baby’s blood ice cream”. They’ve come during Mardi Gras to visit their OLD old friend Chrissy – or technically Christian – who’s more of a “I don’t drink…wine” purist – because at pushing 400 years – Christian doesn’t drink anything (well except blood obviously), or eat and he’s got some cool little fangs that evolution cheated the young ‘uns out of – so they have to file their teeth into points. The vampires of Lost Souls are a species all their own and when one is born, the mother (or host more accurately) dies in childbirth as the baby from almost the moment of conception – begins eating the host from the inside out.During the festivities at Christian’s bar, Zillah – the androgynous, lime green eyed leader of the pack - knocks up a little vampire-wanna-be-groupie; and blows out of town before learning that he’s a proud papa to little Nothing (so named by Christian and gently deposited on the doorstep of some normal people to save the babe from a life of bloodlust, ennui and existential angst). Except what was he thinking – because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, blood calls to blood, yadda yadda. So fast forward 15 years later and little Nothing has had it with his dull, fake parents and his lame gothy-punky-hippie friends – and decides to set off on a road trip to find his real family. And maybe hook up with Ghost and Steve - the musicians from Lost Souls – the Indie rock band he’s been listening to – because maybe THEY’RE his real family - like his long lost brothers or something. So Zillah, Molochai and Twig head south to visit Chrissy, and Christian heads north to escape being hunted by angry villagers and Nothing hitches his way to Missing Mile the home of Lost Souls – and they all converge upon each other in one great big cluster@#$% of disaster. The vampires of Lost Souls are not romantic. Nothing about them is terribly attractive. There’s plenty of sex but none of it is very explicit – or titillating (a lot of BJs and sloppy groping). None of the characters (even the human ones) are very appealing – and all of them are strangers to the “cleanliness is next to Godliness” maxim. Molochai is sticky from his sweets and chocolaty hostess cake snacks leaving a film across his teeth, there’s lots of sweet & sour spit, the vampires have an underlying “meaty” scent, and the humans have greasy hair and clothes that could walk on their own. The incest angle between Zillah and Nothing wasn’t really all the shocking or off putting because they so clearly aren’t human - it was more like… inbreeding in dogs – a whole different vibe. But overall it was an entertaining little horror story. Originally 5 stars - but still a solid 4 upon re-reading 20+ years later.

“Zillah had bewitched Ann. Ghost knew from his grandmother that love-spells don’t work on people who don’t want them, and they are surely the hardest to undo once they are done.”This year I’m making an effort to reread several of my favorite books. I’d be remiss if I failed to include two beloved works by Poppy Z. Brite, LOST SOULS and DRAWING BLOOD. I had a difficult time starting LOST SOULS, because it felt like looking up a dear friend I hadn’t seen in decades. The desire to reconnect battled with the fear of disappointment. With a glacial pace, I read the prologue and the first couple of chapters, and then the book drew me in as it had all those years ago.The appeal of these two books when I read them in the early nineties is apparent when examining a few of the themes of LOST SOULS: being an outsider, searching to find one’s place in the world, the curse of unrequited love, and the gut-wrenching fear of losing a loved one. Themes that tugged at my heart in my youth. Themes which are still relevant decades later. In LOST SOULS certain characters are drawn together, because blood calls to blood. Teenaged Nothing, christened Jason by his adoptive parents, knows he’s different, but until he meets a band of vampires, he doesn’t understand just how different he is. Nothing’s obsession with musicians Steve and Ghost, and their band Lost Souls?, take him on a journey to Missing Mile North Carolina and leave an indelible mark on all their lives.Brite brings the French Quarter lovingly to life along with the human and not-so-human characters. I’d forgotten how LOST SOULS tackles topics such as suicide, incest, and rape. “In a world of night, in a world of blood, what did such pallid rules matter? He wasn’t sure he could ever have felt the things expected of him in the normal world, not even when he had been an unwilling part of it. Its morals had never been his; its baubles of status had never hypnotized him with their false glitter.”With Brite’s dreamy portrayals of the supernatural characters, stellar world building, and raw emotion, LOST SOULS has earned its place on my keeper shelf.

The prose, the descriptions in this strange, eerie, exquisite novel are lush, rich with subtle metaphor and meaning. The characters are a perfect take on vampires, managing to capture both the eroticism and horror of them. They are brutal and beautiful. Subtle discussion of gender, of death and rebirth (as they relate to gender), of family, duty, and adolescence are all here. It's a glorious novel, a perfect, perfect love letter to the goth scene back in the day, a discussion of teenage angst, of rebellion. It taps into the dark parts of the human subconscious, the unspoken and strange within us.The author himself (Poppy Z. Brite is now Billy Martin since he transitioned) is ashamed of the book, but this as a first novel is nothing to be ashamed of. It's a wonderful novel to read for the first times in your early twenties and reread to relive again and again as you get older, because it perfectly captures the atmosphere, the mood of the time.
