Most baby books on the market are just repackaged versions of the AAP recommendations anyway, so I decided to go straight to the source. Yes most of the information is stuff you could get on the internet for free, but that is true of all baby guides nowadays. The benefit of buying the book (besides not being subjected to those annoying "mom advice forums" that clog most baby websites) is that it gives a quick and concise explanation of any issue I am encountering with my baby or toddler. I use it as a quick reference guide-baby has a fever? Lets see what the book says to do. It saves me a ton of time vs. wading through a dozen internet results to find something written by an actual doctor. This guide does not try to be your sassy best friend or wise grandmother, it is a straightforward how-to guide for common issues parent will face with a typical baby.

As the parents of a newborn there is no such thing as being prepared. My wife and I read a ton of books during pregnancy, but the second our little girl arrived, we had more questions than answers and were constantly asking each other 'what do we do'. This book has been great. From breast feeding, to tummy time, coombs positive newborns, etc, this book has had an answer to every question we've wondered about so far. It is reassuring that the book comes from the American Academy of Pediatrics. It certainly helps us to feel good about taking the advice or following the recommendations that we've found in the book. They say there are no stupid questions, and this book seems to take that to heart making sure to cover even the most basic questions and myths about raising kids. I think as a parent its easy to just go to the internet and search for an answer when you are stumped or need to know what to do, but I think this book is probably a better resource. It costs more that the 'free' advice on the net, but I would think most parents like me would sleep better knowing you are actually getting correct and accurate information instead of some 'know it all' mom's advice from a blog.

My husband and I are both in healthcare (a doctor and a nurse), but neither of us has much experience with pediatrics or being parents. This book is extremely helpful and does not dumb anything down, but it's understandable even if you have no medical background. It covers the basics, and has helpful tips like how to dress your baby, etc. I would absolutely recommend this to any new parent!

Unfortunately, babies come to this world without a manual, and every parent has to research on his own how to raise a child. So if you are looking for a high-quality parenting guide, I would definitely recommend reading this book.First of all, this guide is a great source of practical information for both new and experienced parents. You can find:- Recommendations about basic baby care, such as preparing an initial set of clothes, bathing, feeding. This information is especially useful for first-time parents as it helps to deal with everyday challenges.- Information about major developmental skills and milestones. You can find advice on how to choose activities and toys, provide a stimulating environment, encourage desired behavior.- Detailed safety instructions for different stages and places, including home, playground, car, etc.- Information about baby health for different age periods: common health concerns, growth charts, immunization schedule, descriptions of common diseases.Besides a wide number of topics, there is another important thing that makes this book different: this guide is a scientific community work based on recent research and statistical data. Why do I think it’s important?Today there are plenty of ways to find an answer to any question. Friends, parents, social network users, pediatricians - they all have their experience and opinion, and many of them would be happy to share their knowledge with you. But these sources of advice have potential disadvantages.Firstly, some arguments may be outdated. For example, there is evidence that bilingual babies often start talking slightly later than their monolingual peers. For this reason, there was a practice to argue against providing a bilingual environment. But, since that time, researchers found that bilingualism boosts children in many different ways, including creativity, memory, and cognitive abilities.Furthermore, advice is often based on personal experience. But a parent can make a mistake when trying to evaluate a cause-effect relationship between events. Researchers use different strategies to reveal and assert causal connections: conduct randomized experiments, implement variety of non-experimental studies, etc. So it’s worthwhile to ensure that advice is supported by research findings. Finally, the opinion of a particular person can be biased. Participation of different contributors and reviewers reduces the chance of a strong personal influence. So it’s better to check whether a chosen source of information is a product of community work.Babies bring endless happiness to our lives. But they also make us worry about their well-being. This book offers all-around and scientifically proven recommendations so that you can be more confident about your everyday parenting decisions.

Good AAP handy guide for parents, grandparents, or any child caregiver. Yes, information is on the web, but I still like it on the printed page. I am a RN and worked over 25 years in Labor/Delivery. This was the best “gift” given to new parents in my opinion. This is what many pediatricians subscribe to—the American Academy of Pediatrics—sound medical advice and standards of care. Each generation is raised with certain safety standards/care guidelines. We, as a team, learn more and more safer/better strategies for raising infants and children—it is handy to find quick information and when to seek further help.

I gave this as a gift for a baby shower and the parents simply loved the book. It's a great book to reference for first time parent when it's 2 AM and you are trying to figure out what is wrong with your child. I had an older version that my pediatrician gave me and it was sooo valuable. I give it a baby shower gifts now.

As a pediatrician this is the only book I recommend. Bought this one for my pregnant daughter. It covers everything you need to know and is always being updated. Illnesses, development, safety, its all there.

Interesting and helpful. My doctor (at Kaiser) recommended my husband and I buy this book. So far so good. There is a lot of frontloaded information (before the baby is born), so I would recommend buying this book before you give birth. We bought it when our son was three months, so a lot of that information was irrelevant to us.

Time consuming instructions. Not for mild dyslexia. The techniques are workable for jr. high or high school students not pressed for time. Some exercises required too much time to complete. I suppose that doing them over and over would build speed and improve retention of the study material. Also, the size of the book is not very useful. It is small with very small type. It is a pale purple, which makes it harder to read.

This is the perfect guide for dyslexic individuals! It's extremely visual and great for students such as myself. This is definitely one of the few books that I feel really understands the condition by illustrating everything! The flow just works.

As expected -as promised - as advertised. Would recommend to others. Valuable, helpful tips and procedures. Great cheat sheet. Thanks for writing the book.

This book is ok. It outlines a some good, techniques on how to approach studying, but within a very limited scope. The reason I disliked this book is that it only focuses on the shortcomings of dyslexics. It treats dyslexics as if they are defective, calling out dyslexics as having poor short term memory, and slow information processing speed. Reading this as a dyslexic did not excite me to use the learning styles in this book. Rather it made me feel stupid, and inadequate. Making me think that the person who wrote this book really does not understand dyslexia at all. I recommend reading, The Dyslexic Advantage: Unlocking the Hidden Potential of The Dyslexic Brain by Brock I. Eide & Fernett L. Eide.

Outbound: Finding a Man, Sailing an Ocean (Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies, Joan Larkin and David Bergman, Series Editors), by William Storandt

From Publishers Weekly

Graced with an unusually apt title that embraces both the gay concept of coming out and the nautical term for leaving port, this compelling memoir weaves Storandt's tentative coming out during the late 1960s and 1970s with a jaunty account of an Atlantic Ocean crossing with his life partner, Brian, in the early 1980s. He writes with a charming mix of wry self-analysis, dryly witty travel commentary and narrative energy, particularly when it comes to a storm-tossed passage on the crossing to Scotland. The result is a stellar life story with broad appeal. Gay readers of a certain age who came out during the Vietnam War will identify with Storandt's charming, somewhat fumbling progress toward finding a gay lover, while younger gay readers should enjoy a cheerful history lesson. At the same time, fellow sailors will be caught up in the author's obvious passion for sailing and the sea, and will savor the book's nautical savvy and insight. Just as captivating are the quick sketches Storandt draws of his pregay, presailing life, first as a Juilliard-trained orchestral percussionist in New York (session work included banging tambourines in studio sessions for the Monkees), then as a geodesic-dome-dwelling Vermonter. Photos from the adventure generously enhance an already lively account. (Aug.)Forecast: Storandt's engaging twist on the coming-out story and the credibility he's acquired as a 20-year contributor to Cruising World magazine effectively position this memoir as a book for both gay readers and sailors of any persuasion.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Storandt, an avid sailor, freelance writer, and 20-year contributor to Cruising World magazine, tells the story of his voyage across the Atlantic and his life journey to a better understanding of himself. Along with friends Brian and Bob, Storandt sails his 32' wooden cutter, Clarity, on an idyllic cruise from Connecticut to the Azores but then makes a very stormy passage to Scotland. Once in Scotland, the friends cruise the rugged coast, visiting many of the same places as Mairi Hedderwick described in Sea Change: The Summer Voyage from East to West Scotland of the Anassa (LJ 3/15/00). Storandt flashes back to his early life as a music student, his move from New York City to a geodesic dome in Vermont, and his introduction to sailing. His soul searching is greatly influenced by his gradual "coming out" and his realization that he has finally found his life partner. Full of many personal references, this newest volume in "Living Out Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies" series also makes for a good sailing story as well. A nice addition for public libraries. This was a good read

This is an interesting and fascinating memoir of one man's life who happens to love sailing and who is also a gay man living in a caring and loving relationship. You don't have to have a knowledge of sailing to enjoy this book. Although I have gone sailing a few times, I wasn't familiar with a lot of the sailing terms, but the author explains them very well. The author writes with dry wit, a questioning self-analysis, and deep passion. It was a pleasure to read his story, and it was never boring. This is a true-life story that will have broad appeal to many people.Storandt tells in vivid detail the story of his transatlantic sailing adventure from Saybrook, Connecticut to Ireland, then on to Scotland aboard his 33-foot cutter named Clarity. He made this journey with his longtime partner Brian, and their friend Bob. It's an adventure that turns out to be exciting, unpredictable, and even life-threatening. They certainly get to test their sailing skills through rough seas, gale force winds, and a fierce storm. It's not "The Perfect Storm", but it's close. Interwoven throughout his sailing adventure we learn all about Storandt's earlier life; his marriage, being a freelance musician, living in the Vermont woods in a geodesic dome, leaving his marriage, coming out, and meeting his soon to be life partner, Brian, a Scottish doctor. So whether you're hooked on sailing or just want to read a well-written passionate coming out story, this book is for you. I was disappointed when this adventure ended. As good a writer as he is a sailor, Storandt tells a wonderful story I couldn't put down till finished.

I bought this book because I was blown away by Storandt's first fictional novel, "The Summer They Came." However, as a straight male who does not know the first thing about sailing, I did not know what to expect from this work. My enjoyment of Storandt's effort is all the more impressive, given my lack of knowledge about the subject matter. Like all master story tellers, Storandt lets the reader enter his world by describing the situation in detail, with references to more familiar subject matter. For instance, when explaining why he cannot get out of bed during a severe storm, Storandt says that he can no more get out of bed than a potato worm can unfold in your hand ... brilliant! Storandt has 2 running stories in this book. In the foreground is his gripping account of his sailing adventure to Scotland (the homeplace of his life partner) across the Atlantic. In the background, is a discussion of his and his life partner's lives up until the time of the trip, with particular focus on how they came to realize they were gay. I highly recommend this book to even the most staunchly conservative "straights," and to the landlubbers most prone to sea-sickness!

This book, in its less than 200 pages, kinda sneaks up on the reader. It starts out with the writer/narrator filled with self-doubts, both about the voyage he has embarked on and his life for his first thirty years or so. Stay with it and you will be richly rewarded. By page 80 or so I was totally enchanted, first by what slowly unfolds to be a beautiful love story. A love story told with such restraint that it wasn't until halfway through the book that I realized that Bill and Brian were actually a couple, and had been so for more than half a decade. He writes about his partner with such understated ardor that I was sure that the story would end in tragedy, or that merely the two parted company. Neither is true. Oh yeah, and Overboard was also a rip-roaring sailing yarn. And what would have been a rather pathetic coming out story (what took him so long?) until I realized how old he was. Denying oneself and getting married was a more reasonable survival strategy before Stonewall.

William Storandt wanted to sail across the Atlantic. And he was afraid he wanted to love a man. In this sometimes harrowing story of the ocean and the heart, Storandt tells us how he finally managed both. His journeys take him from Julliard to a hippie dome in the Vermont woods to a 30-foot sloop in a life-threatening gale off the coast of Ireland. His parallel course leads him from a youthful marriage to a live-in girlfriend to his first gay bar. And then to Brian Forsyth, a Scottish-born pediatrian at Yale. Storandt's clean prose and eye for fine Homeric detail make for an exciting yarn about an unusual life. You won't have to be gay or nautical to enjoy it.

"Outbound" is a wonderful book, among the best I've read recently in either the gay or sailing genres, but transcending each. I've lived in Vermont, with my lover, since 1976, but sail mostly in Maine waters on my gaff-rigged coastal schooner. So, while the book hooked me with its literary quality, my own experience mirrors -- to a some degree -- the author's. And I tell you: It rings true, with a beautiful, clean tone.

I am a straight woman and not a sailor, and I give this book high marks because it drew me into the action--an Atlantic crossing and a gay awakening. Storandt did a beautiful job of expressing the terror and joy he experienced in pursuit of his passions. The storm descriptions actually scared me. I recommend it to anyone in search of an intelligent, honest account of a real-life adventure.

Crossing thresholds, living dreams, staying steady and listening within! He did it! He writes it as only a person who has felt it all deeply and directly can do-it's not an "about" something book! So glad he wrote it for all of us-couldn't put thebook down!!!! Spellbound by all the possibilities it opens for each of us!
