Grounded in the Faith: An Essential Guide to Knowing What You Believe and Why

From the Back Cover

Your innovative, user-friendly guide for biblical discipleshipThe greatest challenge for the twenty-first-century church is the lack of training in biblical and doctrinal knowledge. We are raising up generations of Christians who often have little idea what they should believe and why they should believe it. Grounded in the Faith takes up that challenge with twenty-four low-prep, in-depth sessions that will ground believers in the basics of their faith. This field-tested guide to growth in the Christian faith covers important topics such as justification, overcoming temptation, sanctification, evidence for the inspiration of the Bible, the value of prayer, the guidance of God, the Trinity, the uniqueness of Christ, and the attributes of God."In our postmodern world, it is so critical to become grounded in the historic doctrines of our Christian faith--this is why I commend Kenneth Erisman for this excellent discipleship guide. Both new and mature believers in Christ can benefit from these timeless and faith-strengthening insights."--Joni Eareckson Tada, Joni and Friends International "An outstanding tool to use in helping believers understand and embrace the basic doctrines of Scripture. It is simple enough to use with new believers and comprehensive enough to use with those who have been believers for some time but have never been taught basic theology. I know of no other discipleship tool like it available today."--Jerry Bridges, author of The Pursuit of Holiness"Under Coach Erisman's tutelage, the Christian learns the heavenly game plan and how to execute it well, and the church team will come to its destined maturity in Christ Jesus."--Bruce K. Waltke, professor of Old Testament at Knox Theological Seminary"This is discipleship as it was meant to be: God-centered, Christ-exalting, and solidly grounded in the authority of Holy Scripture. There's nothing superficial in the spirituality Erisman promotes. It is biblically rigorous, culturally relevant, and focused on producing grace-empowered and spiritually discerning followers of Christ."--Sam Storms, Enjoying God Ministries, author of Pleasures EvermoreKenneth Erisman has an MA in New Testament Literature and Exegesis from Calvary Theological Seminary (Kansas City) and a ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary. He has pastored for thirty years with Converge Worldwide (formerly the Baptist General Conference), and he has been part of two church plants and serves on a church-planting coaching team with Converge. I absolutely love everything about this book. Over the years, I've examined dozens if not hundreds of books on discipleship and making disciples. While they were all well-intentioned, I found them lacking. I was looking for a user-friendly, engaging book that could be used by new believers individually, in a small group or in, especially, a one-on-one mentoring setting. This is the book. Theologically solid and practical. We'll be using this extensively in our church.

This is a helpful resource for discipleship, either one-on-one or in a group. The topics covered are the essentials and they are covered at an introductory level as well as at a deeper level. I found it very helpful and will continue to use it in ministry!

Finally answers to such important questions believers need to understand to grow spiritually! Thanks for including classic authors who speak clearly for others to understand.

Excellent book. Easy to read and understand. It is a great resource for an individual or a Small group or Bible study.

Very user friendly and extremely helpful explaining the doctrines of the Christian faith- "God-centered and Christ-exalting". I highly recommend this book!!

Well written book on how to analyze your personal beliefs.Gordon

What exactly is the biggest challenge in modern Christianity? Echoing Dr J.I. Packer's word, it can be summed up in one word: "catechesis." Arguing that there is a tight correlation between "wise catechesis" and the health of the Church, this guide is written for Churches and believers to adopt a step by step curriculum that can be used for empowering the teachers, equipping the believers, and engaging the world. Is this a tall order?Ken Erisman believes it is possible, and proposes a three stage learning paradigm. Firstly, he urges readers and learners to listen to the what for the message of truth in the Bible. Secondly, he encourages them to absorb the truth through thinking, pausing, reflecting, and integrate them. Thirdly, he exhorts them to let the truths they have learned, to help them interact with the world. Thus, there is a lot of learning as well as equipping going on. With this three-step paradigm, the author skillfully guides readers through three levels of biblical engagement.Level One begins with very basic stuff: Justification; calling of the believers; Salvation; Regeneration; Doctrine of Man and Sin; Temptations; Sanctification; and Scripture. It goes back to the very beginning why we need God in the first place. For unless we all recognize the need, there is very little reason to get back to addressing any need at all! Putting things first, Erisman highlights that man by himself is never good enough. He cannot justify himself. Life is more than good works. We cannot be righteous in our own strength. Through the doctrine of justification by faith, we are reminded again that justification is by God and from God. Erisman goes through the Ten Commandments, Romans, Galatians, with frequent interjections by renowned believers such as Tim Keller, CS Lewis, Philip Graham Ryken and many more to shed farther perspectives on this topic. He talks about the five "incredible spiritual benefits" of calling, regeneration, conversion, salvation, and adoption as children of God. Understanding the significance of each helps us appreciate the immense gift of God in Christ Jesus for us. Then Erisman goes to the other end to show us how vulnerable we are even when we have been justified: Temptations of the devil, the flesh, and the world. For many of us, just to know the different ways temptations can come at us will help us be more spiritually vigilant. Having done the initial benefits and risks description, Erisman ups the stake by exhorting all toward sanctification in Christ. For when we become like Jesus, we will move to a realm where our natural tendency is not to sin, but to be holy. The way to cultivate this holiness is Scripture, which Erisman presents five reasons why Scripture is so critical to the life of the believer.- Jesus held the Word highly, and so should we;- Jesus's Word is eternal, and so too the Scriptures;- Scripture is all inspired by God;- Scripture inculcates faith in us;- Scripture gives us hope and joy.Level Two progresses into an intermediate level. Here, Erisman defends the reliability of the Bible; modes and models of prayer; God's will; and the Trinity. He puts forth four reasons for believing the Bible's divine sources; the Y.M.C.A way to understand the Bible as the Word of God; and affirms again the accuracy and trustworthiness of the Bible. He lists the Lord's Prayer as one of the most essential elements of the Christian life, highlighting six aspects of the prayer for readers to take note of. Prayer and the seeking of God's will go hand in hand. An interesting part is how Erisman describes the "seven specific ways" to discern God's will. He ends the chapter on the subject of the Trinity, and how the Christian needs to appreciate the Trinity as a mystery as well as learning what has been revealed in the Bible. He also highlights the erroneous claims of modalism, tritheism, arianism, and why they do not reflect the Trinity of the Bible.Level Three is about Christ, the attributes and character of God, and the nature of God. Jesus is unique, fully divine as well as fully human. God preserves his children through perseverance, preservation, and assurance. Learning the attributes of God will show us exactly why God instructs the children of God to be. For instance, those who know God will be those who have great energy, great thoughts, great boldness, and great contentment in God. In knowing God better, we too will naturally grow to be better people too. Other questions are also dealt with such as,Does God really need our glorifying of him?Why does the Bible calls God as "jealous?"What about the "wrath of God?"If God created everything, it it then true that God is the author of sin?...These and many more are covered in clear and poignant ways.So What?I remember a time when books by the late Paul E. Little were popular with my circle of friends. Books like "Know What You Believe," Know Why You Believe," and "How to Give Away Your Faith" are remain respectable on Amazon rankings to this day. Reading this book is like combining some of the best parts of those three books into one. More than that, this book is a book of theology made simple for the layperson. I find the book very light in terms of its delivery, but upon seeing the scope of coverage and the important issues it highlights, I have to constantly remind myself not to belittle the simple words. For the most profound truths can come forth through the simplest words. In reading the book, readers will be encouraged that studying theology need not mean plowing through thick encyclopedia-sized textbooks or leafing through dated documents by dead theologians. Theology is very much ancient and contemporary, reverent and relevant, heaven-focused and earthly minded. In trying to make the best sense of the book, let me offer a L.A.I.T.Y acronym to be used as a pedagogical handle. The first three is borrowed from Erisman's three-step paradigm for learning. The next two is my contribution to make the acronym work.First, Listen for teaching moments. There is no need to jump through the pages just to find something that resonates with our heart. If readers find something interesting or troubling, just pause and listen through the words, asking God what it all means.Second, Absorb the word of God. Let the Scripture references be the anchor for all the descriptions that Erisman have done. After all, any other text book or human authors can only try to shed light on the Main Deal: The Bible. Consider the Bible references and read this book with an open Bible. Absorb through memorizing the Word of God.Third, Interact broadly and boldly. The Word of God is not meant to just paralyze us into a closed ended analytical exercise. There are contemporary moments in which what we learn can be put into practice in our daily lives. Perhaps, the interaction begins with saying out the Word of God from memory.Fourth, be Teachable. In our day and age, it is easy to let knowledge and the accumulation of know-how puff us up. As we go forth to engage the world, to equip believers, and to exhort the Church to do more, we need to be reminded that we too are works in progress. We too need to be constantly learning. Being a disciple is essentially about being a learner too. Our humility is reflected through our teachability.Fifth, Yield to the Spirit of God to guide us. There is no guarantee that whatever we have learned will have an immediate application. Sometimes, we just need to bide our time and wait for the right opportunity. This is where cultivating a sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit is important. The ability to yield to God is an indication of our relationship with God in the first place.Overall, I recommend this book for the equipping of the laity in Christian Education.Rating: 5 stars of 5.conradeThis book is provided to me free by Baker Books and NetGalley without any obligation for a positive review. All opinions offered above are mine unless otherwise stated or implied.

Catechism. Even worse, catechesis. These were words that once struck fear into my heart, or if not fear, dread at least. Whatever the emotion, I have had an uneven history with catechisms. I was catechized as a child and as a teen. This involved memorizing questions and answers from the Heidelberg Catechism, then standing before a minister and a class of fellow students to recite what I had learned. "What is your only comfort in life and death?" he would ask. And I would recite, "That I am not my own, but belong in body and soul, both in life and death, to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ..."It is only in adult life that I came to appreciate those Tuesday evenings at the church and those Tuesday afternoons on the school bus, trying desperately to cram those answers into my brain. And it is only more recently still that I came to understand that catechesis is not so much about memorization and rote recital as it is about systematic instruction. Catechizing a child does not demand memorization and recitation, though these may be helpful, but it does demand systematic instruction. The Heidelberg Catechism is not a book to be memorized as much as it is a well-rounded and systematic exposition of the Christian life that is meant to be understood so it may in turn be applied. I am convinced that somewhere, somehow, those classes from long ago are somehow manifesting themselves in my life today.Catechizing has fallen out of favor in most Christian traditions and we are undoubtedly the worse for it. Just a few years ago J.I. Packer offered this perspective, this challenge: "Where wise catechesis has flourished, the church has flourished. Where it has been neglected, the church has floundered."Grounded in the Faith is a new tool for catechesis, that is, for laying a consistent, systematic groundwork for the Christian life. Kenneth Erisman, its author, writes, "The aim of this book is to see the church flourish for the glory of God. We are convinced that by designing this guide to be user-friendly but at the same time keeping Reformation depth, followers of Christ will have a transferable tool to become grounded in the faith."Indeed, they will. In three levels (sections) and twenty-four chapters, Erisman advances from the elementary doctrines of the Christian faith (justification, sanctification, overcoming sin and temptation, and the importance of Scripture) to level two (the inspiration of Scripture, prayer, guidance and the will of God, and the Trinity) and finally to level three (the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ, perseverance and assurance, the attributes of God and the mystery of God's sovereignty). Each chapter follows a consistent format of listen (read a short lesson), absorb (pause and think) and interact (answer questions of comprehension and application). Every chapter concludes with a section geared toward cultivating spiritual habits such as Scripture reading, praying and memorizing Scripture. It is all packaged in an attractive and contemporary paperback workbook format. But I know you have a greater concern than the format and layout. You want to know about the teaching. The author gave a hint earlier when he wrote of "Reformation depth." Erisman sticks very closely to the doctrine of the Reformation. You can get a good sense of where he goes from the list of sources cited and the list of endorsers. For example, in his discussion of the Trinity he relies primarily on James White with several hat tips to Wayne Grudem, while in two chapters on the sovereignty of God, he cites John Piper, Louis Berkhof, and John Flavel while tracking very closely with R.C. Sproul. Meanwhile, the book carries endorsements from Jerry Bridges (who calls it "an outstanding tool" for discipleship), Bruce Waltke, Sam Storms and Joni Eareckson Tada.Grounded in the Faith is a book you will find useful for one-on-one or group discipleship or, dare I say it, catechesis. It is a book parents may want to use with their children. It is a book for mature believers to go through with and beside new Christians. It is one for pastors to stock up on. It is, as Sam Storm says, "discipleship as it was meant to be: God-centered, Christ-exalting, and solidly grounded in the authority of Holy Scripture." I am excited about it and give it my highest recommendation.

The saying is, "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink." BUT, if you put some salt in his oats he'll want to drink without without prodding, begging or forcing!I wasn't sure how the 6yr olds I have would take to this. They're not reading 'chapter books' just yet - they're great with the typical, simple and short kid-books we read front-to-back each night. I have 'Extreme Ownership' and was concerned JW's style may be too advanced, dry, preachy or over my twins' heads...WotWK proved me wrong! With "Way of the Warrior Kid," I set the expectation of one chapter a night. Once finished with the single chapter I tell them the name of tomorrow night's chapter to whet their appetite. Invariably, they beg, "One more chapter! Just one more!" It's written in a great first-person style the kids relate to. The illustrations and "I stink" humor of the wimpy Marc engage my kiddos and there is anticipation built into each chapter that makes us wanting to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. Salt.Jocko's jiu-jitsu training has moved from the mat to the written word: the lessons are not delivered with telegraphed haymakers but with 'subliminal, verbal judo' and allegory.I'm so glad I took a chance and got this for our family. Lessons and lectures from dad can meet with resistance and eye-rolling (akin to teaching my wife handgun skills), but coming from a third party the instruction is eagerly welcomed! "...a prophet is not accepted in his hometown..."Now they are more eager to exercize (loved how they lit up when "burpees" were mentioned in the book - "hey, we know them, Dad! You taught us those!") And when it is homework or get-ready time I remind my kids about Marc and Uncle Jake - and suddenly they're all in. They used to whine when it was mean ol' dad asking, but they'll do what's needed when characters they admire/identify with or like from the book show them the benefit of discipline. If this became a franchise ala 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' we'd be all in for future installments. Reading this has opened us up to more substantive reading - we'll weave in some quality kids books to our nightly reading that are beyond the fluff of kittens, Minecraft and Dr.Seuss thanks to TWotWK.The book will definitely support the 'all in, all the time' credo we're inculcating into our little ones.HOOYAH!p.s. "Zero dark-thirty" is now a part of my son's vocabulary and he laughs every time he says it and my daughter loves to say how she and mom need garbage can lids being clanged to wake up. It's been a great opportunity for bonding and laughing (while sneakily influencing their behavior!).

I got my first experience with Jocko from his other book Extreme Ownership and liked what he had to say.So, I bought this book so that my 8 yr old son and I could read it together. 1. To toughen him up a little and 2. To get him interested in reading on his own. Each night we would read 2-3 chapters before bedtime and before long, he kept asking me during the day if we were going to read it again that night. We both started referencing points in the book at times when something reminded us of it and began sharing the stories with friends and family. Before the end of the book, my son would be getting up early, setting his alarm to be the second out of bed, after dad.At the end of the book, my son asked if we could buy the 2nd book in the series...It's been about a week since we finished the book and last night he began reading the book on his own from the start. This is exactly what we needed. Thanks Jocko, keep them coming!

Simply put, I believe this book will prove to be Jocko's greatest work. Allow me to explain its genius with a little story of my own. This small, unassuming book is the literary equivalent of getting a child to take bad-tasting medicine by hiding it in chocolate pudding. The medicine (boring life lessons like discipline and hard work) is unconsciously consumed with each delicious spoonful of pudding (Way of the Warrior Kid). We pick up the story as the child is eating the last bites of pudding.Dad reaches the spoon into the cup one last time, scraping the bottom, then feeding his son the last chocolatey spoonful."All done!", He exclaimed before sitting back to relish in the satisfaction of having successfully flanked his stubborn son into taking his medicine."But wait...", he thought, "My mouth tastes funny..."He instinctively wiped the edges of his mouth, only to discover chocolate pudding on his fingertips."That's weird. I didn't take a single bite of that pudding."Suddenly he sensed the presence of someone other than his son. As he turned his gaze, their eyes locked."J-j-j-j-jocko?!", he stuttered."Good Evening, Dad", grumbled a smirking Jocko Willink."How did you... What are you...""I am sorry, Dad. This was the only way for me to get YOU to take YOUR medicine."Jocko went on to explain how he pulled off this elaborate con known in the SEAL Teams as The Willink Switcharoo. The objective of The Willink Switcharoo is for Jocko to implant an idea into someone's mind so stealthily that they believe they came up with it. With his target consumed with the execution of "their" idea, Jocko is able to slip in and administer the needed intervention to the unconscious target. After realizing what happened, Dad was speechless. Jocko caused Dad to focus so much on giving the medicine to his son that he did not realize that a 230lb Navy Seal was giving him spoonfuls of the same, sweet medicine."Thanks", Dad said."You can thank me by getting after it", said Jocko.Jocko then stood up, pulled a bag of Jocko White Tea from his pocket, placed it in between his cheek and gums like chewing tobacco, and BTF'd out the front door never to be seen again.TL;DR Jocko hid valuable life lessons in a children's book, which will likely impact as many adults as it does children.--Standing by for Jocko's approval - johnlovett.mail@gmail.com
