This is the second of Ansel Adams' most read trilogy, and it is thorough, competent, informative and important as a celebration of the great years of silver-based photography. Even in the digital age there is a lot to learn from this, as what is important is the choice of paths, available within the technology, to achieve an ultimate goal. Change the technology and you change the pathways, but the paradigms that govern the choices remain the same. It should be read together with The Print by the same author.

I gave away my hardback copy of this classic years ago. I wanted to read again several parts of it so I just bought the Kindle edition. Big mistake. It is not formatted for Kindle at all -- just a very small photo copy of the original with no real Kindle features (as in eyestrain). Buy the paperback.

As an advanced amateur photographers, my feelings about this book are mixed. Majority of the concepts are dated (unless you are a film photographer) and readability issues. Mostly there won't be any continuity in reading the book because of the same.Zone system is the only reason why I bought this book and that is the key take away for digital photographers and who wants to plan to make their photos in future. Hands down, nobody else could explain it better than the master himself. I wish I am shooting film!!However, in today's world of mass propaganda (AKA YouTube) this book is a very good read and definitely provides a direction about general principles of how to think when you are about to take (possibly make one in future) picture and no go run acquiring all the gear in the world.

What a brilliant book. This is a masterpiece, by a master craftsman.While the details may have changed, the principles have not. These are timeless, and this is what he sets out to demonstrate again.The book is laid out in the most logical manner. The section on the Zone System is a must read for any photographer.His grasp of the subject is masterly, and so is his treatment of the subject.

This should be mandatory reading for anyone wishing to call themselves a photographer. Even if you have never or will never own a film camera, this book will give you practical advice that will make you a better photographer. It is this book in which Ansel describes in detail his famous "Zone System." Understanding this system has, without exaggeration, changed the way that I look at photography. If you buy only one photography book, make it this one!

Great read, Ansel Adams shares his wisdom and knowledge in the Negative, the second book in a three-part series. I also read the Camera, also very much worthwhile, and got me interested in film cameras (large format). I shoot digital and still found a LOT of value in Ansel's Negative. If you're more interested in digital photography and believe Photoshop can solve all your issues, then this definitely isn't the book for you. If you are even mildly interested in film, or want to better understand your camera and exposure, and/or want to learn about both the theory AND how to apply it to the real world, then this is a great book for you. I found value as a digital photographer in reading this book (learning about Zone system and how the camera "sees" the world and how it translates into a printed image), but you need to know how to "connect" the dots back to digital if you do. (I process RAW images in Lightroom / Photoshop and found it refreshing to "go back to basics" and see how the masters of film approached their craft). I've gotten inspired, and am saving up for a medium or large format film camera to take my craft to the next level after reading this book.

Still a classic on exposure even in the age of digital photography. In Adams' series, it is not so much the material and its relationship to available photography products that is important rather, the thought processes that brought about the Zone System.

A must read. The explanation of the zone system is outstanding. I had taken a number of skyline photographs of Austin which when reviewed by professional photographers got 2 thumbs up. After looking at them with a critical eye on exposure and armed with my new understanding of the zone - I retook those same pictures and WOW. What an amazing ability to move your camera off of matrixed metering and know how to really set the exposure for what you want to show. Also helps you understand the tradeoffs the camera is making in it's exposure settings so you can be more purposeful in changes you might make. A critical read if you also intend to ever move into large format photography.

I really enjoyed the first part of this book. It drew me in quickly and was very interesting. I was worried that as an adult, I wouldn't appreciate this book as much since it's written for young teens, but that ended up not being an issue. It doesn't read like a teen novel typically does. It was really interesting to imagine Helen as a real person and as someone who was more than just a pretty face.However, as the novel went on, I felt my interest waning. During her travels, I kept looking forward to when she would go back home because the story was so wonderful and rich while she was in Sparta, but the majority of the book is set in other locations where it just loses something. The ending was so remarkably anti-climatic that I was initially in complete disbelief that it was the end of the book. Granted, there is a sequel, but the first book didn't even end in such a way that I even care about reading the sequel.Throughout the book, I kept thinking about what the circumstances would be for this Helen to end up married to Menelaus and run away (or be kidnapped) by Paris to start the Trojan War. Unfortunately, it seems clear from the description of the sequel that we will never find those answers, which is a big disappointment to me. I understand the author wanted to tell the story "before" the story that everyone knows, but this ended up feeling like a story about some random girl because I can't seem to match up the Helen from this story with the Helen she supposedly would become. If the author had taken the next step and continued Helen's journey, this would be a much different review.All in all though, this seems like a great book for young teens. If you happen to be an adult that was drawn in because of the topic though, don't expect to be blown away.

Nobody's Princess (Princess of Myth) by Esther Friesner follows the story of Helen of Sparta who itches for more out of life. She's not one to sit by and count on the gods to take care of her, so she sets out to get what she wants with a sassy attitude. However, that attitude can also get her into trouble and cause a few enemies.On the one hand, it was a pretty good read and on the other hand, it had some flaws. It was a very quick read, so that's always a plus. I loved the theme and setting since I love my history - even more when it's Greek history and there's Greek Gods involved.However, there were a few issues as well. Most of the characters were flat and the MC seemed a bit whiny and too perfect. Pretty much close to a Mary Sue, if not one already. I mean, she happens to excel at everything more than her brothers? Yeah, okay... Of course, this novel also teaches that girls aren't girls unless they act like men and fight.It was a predictable plot and it wasn't done in an interesting or different way. It was the standard, stereotypical way. Still, it wasn't like it was horrible to read. It was a quick read that wasn't too bad.

Helen is determined to be more than what people expect her to be, which is a princess of Sparta. She isn't willing to just sit at home and embroider. No she plans on taking her fate into her own hands and having as many adventures as possible.Cute story. I picked it up as I love historical fiction and hadn't read much from the Grecian time period recently. And while I enjoyed it, I have to say its probably better for a young adult/teen reader. Bit to simple and not enough grit for me. As well, there was not really an ending to the book. Instead, it ends as a lead up to the next book, which was a bit disappointing.

Okay so I read the first on and Loved it and ordered the second one I had the intention of reading them to my 10 year old sister because I thought these might get her to read more becasue she hates girls who are helpless but loved Princess stories when she was younger. Well those interntions changed when I read this.It was really good but has more young adult middle school aged content then I expected. I loved the book becuase I understood alot of what happened but my sister is 10 and would not get any of it and would start asking intresting questions. I reccomend this for children over age 12 for children younger I would wait a while.Other than that it was a really good book. There are sime sad parts but things are happy in the end. Helen is a wonderful character and was shown perfectly as more than the 'Face that luanched a 1000 ships' I have no doubt that her friend Milo would go to war for his Helen these are great books if you can understand them.

This is a great story about Helen of Troy. It does not espouse history but tells a story about her based on what we know. Our middle school student found this a great book.

didn't like the ending.

Personally, I thought it was boring. I read it awhile ago for school and we talked about in a group. Others thought the same. I guess this will be your type of book it you like princesses and adventures that but it is not for people who want something exciting or thrilling.

When reading this book I wasn't sure if I'd like it, being that I'm not a history buff. Well, I didn't have to worry about it after all. This book has a issue that some girls face when being around your friends that may not be as pretty as you and they voice their opinion on it. There is also the tomboy aspect for you tomboys. It was very enjoyable and I did not put down once. I'm very excited to read the next one.

This edition is a significant downgrade from previous ADC Greater Washington. The counties are no longer color coded, the new 4 digit page numbers are a terrible idea; I find it much harder to navigate around between pages. Also, the shopping centers are now the same color as the schools?!? And they got rid of the nice large light orange metro station rectangles and replaced with a TINY green circle S that blends in with the other circle letter landmarks. Some secondary roads are yellow now and some are red, what for? Again just harder to find things at quick glance.Boo.

There's a lot going on in this novel and I am glad that I was finally able to add it to my audio library collection. I have listened through it a few times already. I always seem to hear some detail that I didn't catch the first time. The characters are familiar from the earlier Clancy books, but they remain engaging and the author continues to build nuances into them. There is a lot going on throughout the story that keeps the listener/reader engaged and focused.

If you’ve seen the movie, you have to read the story! If you haven’t seen the movie, then read the book first. Both are great. The characters are so real life, you will feel like they’re friends. I have always enjoyed Tom Clancy movies, but the books are still better!

First rate Techno-thriller from Tom Clancy has the continuing adventures of Jack Ryan and his confrontation with government officials who sell out to Drug dealers. Great details in the story and a good amount of action make this a next great book in the Jack Ryan storyline. Enjoy!!

This is a wonderful example of the author's art of weaving an exciting and interesting story with real facts, places, and situations. The CIA has hatched a plot to protect the country from the scourge of the Columbian drug cartels. Jack Ryan becomes the voice of reason when the plot unravels. This is a book not easy to put down!

In fact, I have only a few more books to read twenty plus so far I will have read every thing Tom Clancy has written. You get your moneys worth with his books which are on an average of say 750 pages. It is a great story line and Jack Ryan is his star character series. It somewhat follows our current political situation with of course names and places changed and maybe some embellishing of current events. It was better than the movie. Jim H.

I am a huge Clancy fan, and after his recent death I decided to re-read all of his books in chronological order. I then realized that I had never actually read Clear and Present Danger (just saw the movie). The book lived up to my expectations. Much better than the movie despite being dated (book was written decades ago, descriptions of computer technology sounds ridiculous now i.e. high density disk drives being cutting edge). Must read for fans of Clancy or techno thrillers

A novel that bears the Tom Clancy brand, that sounds exactly like him. This I say while I'm reading "Under Fire", with his brand name, that doesn't have his "aura".

Outstanding story, crisp action, compelling narrative. Clancy was a master of modern technological conflict.

Another winner here. My kid is already a fan for this hardcover series and as soon as he discovered this when I opened the box, he jumped and started reading this right away. He finished it up rather quickly and he was so excited about it. In one of the other book from this series, we were making "vampire soup" from the recipe because he love it so much. I wonder what this book brings ... I will see. 5 out of 5 Stars.

My 9 year old daughter loves this book series. She was so excited to receive this, she finished it in one evening. She loves the pictures in the book as well as the story. Highly recommend to any parent wanting their children to read more!

I home school and my boys all have disabilities. These books were a chance a few months ago that I took in the hope of finding "The book that made all the difference!" I write, so they are always asking me to write for them, but I need time to finish a book for their summer reading. These books are GREAT! I love them. They include all the cool stuff kids like; a secret language, maps, color coded words, a touch of witty humor, and a touch of trouble making wonder. They love these. Book was described accurately by the seller. We were very happy with it's arrival.

My kid loves these books. Nicely illustrated and entertaining, once he picks up a book he cannot put it down until it is finished with it. The books also have a very good use life, as he comes back to it again and again and reads it with pleasure, always finding and deciphering a new word play.

All I know is that my nine year old grandson, for whom I bought this book, is devouring it on his own on a Kindle. With other books, I would have to read with him - which we both enjoy. With this book, he reads without prompting. And then he enthusiastically tells me a detailed summary of the story.

My 8 yr old has every one of the Geronimo Stilton books and he read each of them in about a week. He got a low grade in school in Reading, last semester. So, I asked him if he wanted to get a bookshelf in his room and fill it with books he read. He immediately asked for the next book in this series and the rest is history. Keep in mind this is a kid who prefers to play with Legos, be outside with other friends or get some time on the Xbox...in the middle of a free Saturday afternoon, I have seen him pick up this book, go to a quiet place and read. I could not recommend this any higher.

My kids are huge Geronimo Stilton fans. They are especially fond of the Kingdom of Fantasy. This latest installation did not disappoint. These books are one of the few that my kids will go back and read over and over.

My Grandson loves these books. As long as he enjoys reading them, I will continue buying them! I honestly never saw him get so excited when I gave him this book, even at Christmas or Birthdays! For a 7 year old boy to get excited over a book, it must be a pretty special series. I would much rather buy books than toys that are played with for a few minutes and forgotten. He even says he reads these over and over.
