What a good book. You need to read this one. I honestly put Mr. Watts up there with nearly all of my other favorites, Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, Mark Greaney, Ted Bell, Kyle Mills, Lee Child, Daniel Sylva, Joel Rosenburg, etc. I had read his other book(s) "The War Planners" and absolutely loved it (them.) Sadly, I read them as they came out one at a time so it was more like an old fashioned serial for me but I heartily recommend that you read it, too, but as one book.This book kept my interest from the get go and never led me astray. I thought I had figured out the plot a few times and then he'd take another turn and make me have to guess again. That's a good thing. And the length is good, too, without too much of that "filler" that so many authors have to put in for their books to be over 300 pages. I work out on an elliptical-type machine for 60-90 minutes a day and read my Kindle. I can usually tell how good a book is by how quickly the time passes while reading it. This book kept my attention so well that the time just flew by! I can't wait for the next episode of Max Fend to see where Mr. Watts takes him again!
Max Fend isn't Scott Harvath or Mitch Rapp, but, that's what makes this such a captivating read. The focus isn't on a bunch of high-tech SOGear or rappelling down the side of a cliff to take out 10 tangos with your bare hands (even though that's cool). Instead, the main characters are believable, relateable people involved in a gripping whodunnit plot. There's some technical stuff and 3-letter government agencies, but they aren't the central theme. The relationship Max has with his partner is also what sets this apart from the stereotypical "special ops loners with a screwed up past" plots. One of the things I loved best was the setting. I grew up in Jax and the descriptions of the area and features are spot on...it was like taking a trip down memory lane. This book is easy to read, easy to follow and, well...different, but in a good way. If I didn't have to round up, this would get 4.5 stars...only because you got nowhere to go when you start at the top, and I have very high expectations for the next installment!
I've never heard of Andrew Watts (sorry Andrew), but I took a chance on this book for 2 reasons: a) it had a picture of an airplane on the cover, along with an aviation term, and b) it was on sale cheap.I am so glad for those 2 coincidences. I won't give away any of storyline, but I will say that the action was exciting without being outrageously unlikely, the plot moved along at a very good pace from start to end, and the aviation references were technically correct. The good guys didn't have halo's, the bad guys were seriously bad and weren't portrayed as a bunch of bumbling fools, and the action scenes weren't far fetched. I just really liked the way this was written.For context I read a lot by the following authors: Clancy, Greaney, Baldacci, Flynn, Cussler, Larsen... I think you get the picture.
I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of this book and really enjoyed it. The premise of the story is very timely, and I think this is an interesting take on the impact of modern technology both on our lives, and within the mindset of those who want to cause chaos and harm. There are some things you need to suspend belief over, but that is exactly what a thriller is supposed to do. Great job and highly recommended!
Watts has a lot going for him, brilliantly creative, graphic wordsmith able to bring to life realistic characters and situations in an ultra modern environment that might seem futuristic to some. A most enjoyable read with constant action and unexpected surprises. Also, as a fellow pilot (CFI, AGI & T-Wheel), I especially appreciate his technically accurate aviation terms and actions.
I really enjoyed reading Andrew Watt's "Glidepath", despite missing sleep in the process. My version came via Amazon's 'Kindle' application and I even signed up for Andrew's email which I've only done for 2 other authors. Wow.The fictional Max is the son of a very wealthy aviation industry corporation owner. After college Max's exploits as a playboy partier make the tabloids and cover his activities as a U.S. undercover agent. There are plots within plots unfolding as Max and Renee (former Canadian cyber security agent and ex girlfriend) struggle to stay alive, avoid the bad guys, and while they're at it save a plane full of people on an exhibition test flight with a new artificial intelligence as chief pilot. The flight has been remotely taken over by a tough opponent.Max and Renee face a guy who's a Russian crime boss, was a Spetsnaz operator, and now has his own private army of special forces type contractors to defend his endeavors.Max and Renee get some help along the way from the British MI-6, the FBI, the DNI, and the U.S. Air Force. But plot twists and treachery lurk everywhere.
This story is a page turner. The story has many twists and turns. It mentions things that are in today’s news. The reader feels like the reader is reading current events. The story is very plausiblele because Uber is actually going to have pilotless aircraft taxi-service next year. The private plane Max flies in this story is real and actually has saved many lives because it really has its own parachute,
Having been an Air Force fighter pilot for eight years and a major airline pilot for thirty, I could nit pick on some technical points, but that wouldn’t detract from the story. Good thriller with just enough suspense to keep me turning pages. The ultimate conclusion was foreordained, but just enough surprise twists to make it interesting. Enjoyable read if you’re not expecting a literary masterpiece.
