There is no doubt Mr. Lewis is an expert in Islamic studies. He does not has a patronizing tone towards Muslims or Islam, which makes this book a non-partial attempt at one of the most interesting aspects of Islamic history. This book starts off with the background of the era in which it is placed. Then it moves towards the minority sect within Islam called Shism (Shias or people who claim that Hazrat Ali, fourth Caliph of Islam, should have been the 1st caliph.) In later chapters he provides insight into the beginnings of this radical sect within Shia group called Ismailis, so named because they are the followers of Hazrat Ismail (RA), Imam (leader). The Assassins brings to the life their belief system, their strategies vis-a-vis Sunni Muslims and how such a small group of people were able to hold into their forts. The strategies they used were both radical and classic. And their most potent weapon was murder. No wonder the term was later adopted by the Crusaders, who brought the term to Europe. In the final chapter of the book, Mr. Lewis explains why today Ismailis are non-radical. He very clearly explains the reasons which forced them to become such an aggressive force and yet today they are the most educated and non-violent of all Muslim sects.Full marks to the author.

Bernard Lewis has a long history of providing excellent reviews of major themes of Islam to Western readers. This is another such example.Lewis produced this volume in 1967. His trademarks in scholarship, including a focus on primary sources and a deep knowledge of the language and history of the region, allows him to create a vivid picture of the religious sect in Muslim history, weeding out the myths that have surrounded the Assassins since the 11th century. The Assassins were a radical offshoot of Shiite Islam called Ismailis. While never a conquering or crusading force, they were at various times able to influence and direct events, mainly out of fear and trepidation they caused in the various rulers around them. Their main objective was overturning the existing Sunni regimes, and they did so through radical fanaticism of their followers and a deep belief in the traditions of sacrifice and martyrdom in Shiite beliefs.Lewis has produced a tidy little volume that is well worth the afternoon it takes to read this book. I highly recommend it.

No wonder many hate Bernard Lewis in my homeland but still read his books. If we could write about the medieval history of Europe for instance with this clarity and skillfull scholarship but with storytelling mastership and spread it among people (and 'consultants') the same way, more Europeans would've left with no stomach to feel superior about their own civilisation again.Good scholarship and deep balanced research pursuing only the truth in this era of great changes in the mideast. My advice to those who're seeking to find the routes of terrorism in their Western homelands these days is to read more about European infiltration to the mideast in the medievals (Lewis is barely touching on the crusaders of this era so nothing is clear on their events and interactions with locals) and in the 19th and 20th century including (but not limited to) the Allenby's invasion of Jerusalem in WW1 that turned it later to an exclusive land for one group of its original inhabitants (the Jews) and their relatives in the diaspora.

Truth be told I bought this because I'm an Assassin creed fan but after buying this for my kindle fire I could hardly put it down and I am loving everything i am reading with in it. Lewis does a great job with giving information and reference on the assassins and their origin.

Informative but not as interesting as other books by the same author

Great book by Bernard Lewis.

It took me awhile to get the book, considering I kept having to re-order it from different companies....but I finally got it! And it is a fascinating read! I used it as a source for my Medieval History paper, and my professor is the one who suggested it! We shall see how good of a grade he gives me on it!

Puts the September 11 terrorist attacks in perspective. Somewhat dry account; does not repeat the lurid tales which have been spun about the Assassins. Needs to be combined with Amin Maalouf's "The Crusades through Arab Eyes" for a fuller understanding.

Dana's amazing book ripped me right open. I took the "archetype quiz" online, found it interesting, and was compelled to see if the book might be a missing puzzle piece in my journey of healing an autoimmune condition. Upon reading the chapter behind my archetype of a "Nurturer" I read things that truly taught me the WHY behind who I am. I am the child of a mother who was hugely overwhelmed, not attuned to myself or my brothers, struggling from mental health issues and an alcoholic. To my surprise, apparently MANY "Nurturers" have similar upbringings that have led to hormone imbalances (me), systemically gaining weight throughout their bodies (me!), and tend to comfort eat (me!!!). I truly thought as a "Nurturer" who puts people first that that's just who I was - a kind, sensitive, and empathetic person that wants to help others. While I was aware that this affected my upbringing tremendously, it was Dana's amazing writing and "archetypes" that showed me how the relationship with my mother, biological makeup, and eating are entirely intertwined - and upbringing can truly alter (and manifest) your biologic makeup and approach to eating. This book gave me crystal-clear insight into myself that literally TEN years of therapy hasn't unearthed. The Archetype Diet combines functional medicine, nutrition therapy, and mindfulness principles seamlessly, and I am so glad I stumbled upon this gem. I hope it brings you as much clarity as it brought me - or at least, a little more clarity into who you are at a very fundamental level underneath all of our layers.

Please don't allow the word "diet" in the title deter you. This book is insightful, progressive and way more than just a nutritional health plan. DIET AND EXERCISE ALONE WILL NOT NECESSARILY CHANGE YOUR BODY. For years, I've had a very "clean" diet, exercised regularly, and have not been able to get excess weight off. We all have psychological patterns that show up in our bodies - and Dana James guides you to discover the deeply rooted issues behind our physical appearance to become a more well-balanced person. I highly recommend this book.

What is different about this book is that it combines nutrition with psychology in a unique way. According to James, the fundamental question that is driving our eating and drinking choices is: "From where do you derive your self worth?" James asserts that there are four archetypes: Nurturer, Wonder Woman, Femme Fatale, and Ethereal. One of these archetypes has the clue for where you and I derive our self worth and how that impacts our food (and beverage) choices. There is of course a quiz to help figure out your dominant archetype but you can take that on James' website. Nurturers derive self worth from how they care for others. Wonder Women (me) derive it from accomplishment, with the rallying cry for bad food behavior of "I deserve this!" I now understand why I have briefly succeeded on diets but why I have never been able to maintain the diet and therefore the weight loss--I never got to the issue of self worth at the core. Here's the gist, quoting from the Introduction: "Source of Self-Worth--> Change in Behavior-->Change in Eating Behaviors-->Change in Hormones-->Change in Body Shape. Traditional diet programs focus on how your eating behaviors affect our body--change your behavior, change your body shape--but they fail to consider the beginning of the cycle. Yes, if you eat nutrient-dense foods that rebalance your hormones and help your body function properly, you will loose weight. But if you don't change how you use food (e.g., as a reward, distraction, desensitizer, comfort or punishment), and more important, why you use food in this way, you will eventually revert to eating the same way you always have, ending up frustrated because you 'know better.' You can't master step three in the cycle until you understand how you got there." Excellent book. And yes, I'm losing weight because I'm changing my food behaviors and I'm able to change my food behaviors because I'm choosing to derive my worth in new ways. Losing weight is nice but feeling like I'm not being ruled by my food moods is even better.

This book is groundbreaking and a must read for any woman who struggles with body image, emotional eating or self-worth. I took the quiz and was completely floored by the results. I had thought of myself and food/body challenges so differently for years and this was incredibly eye opening. I got new insight on past and current struggles and how they fit with my childhood and how I evaluated my own self-worth. This book does a great job of providing information based on scientific facts and research combined with Dana's knowledge acquired from years of experience working with women, their emotions and values. The author's true desire to help women shift relationships with food and body is apparent in this book. It's well written, informative and real. Best book I've read to date on women, food and self-worth. Highly recommend it!

The Archetype Diet is a breath of fresh air in the world of diets. Through this brilliant concept of Archetype discovery, the reader is walked through a practical journey that leads to total body transformation, self appreciation and ease. As an expert in the field, I was skeptical at first, but hands down this is my #1 recommendation to ANY woman looking to loose weight.

I have tried following the recommendations in this book, but I have determined that some of the information just doesn't work for me. I fit too much into two categories, and the differences make it somewhat contradictory, so I found this to be unnecessarily complicated. Also, I am not prepared to run out and have expensive tests done. It may be great for those who have the resources to work directly with a professional, but using this in a broad/general sense is not really as effective as I needed. Glad if it works for some.

About the Author

William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.Barbara A. Mowat is Director of Research emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and author of The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s Romances and of essays on Shakespeare’s plays and their editing.Paul Werstine is Professor of English at the Graduate School and at King’s University College at Western University. He is a general editor of the New Variorum Shakespeare and author of Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare and of many papers and articles on the printing and editing of Shakespeare’s plays.

King Lear is one of the bloodiest plays in Shakespeare's body of work. And it is a harrowing play. Not just death, but cruelty and brutality reign. Lear, as father, makes an ill-conceived choice in rewarding his three daughters--Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. This sets in motion Lear's downward spiral and begets conspiracies, betrayals, and murder. By the play's end, several leading characters have died. And, by that time, Lear has come to understand the folly of his choices regarding his daughters. By then, too late. . . .A powerful and dark tragedy. . . .

The Tragedy of King Lear is a gem with keen insights into the ways that people can be superficial at their own peril and the peril of those they love. Unfortunately, I read the Kindle version. As with many Kindle books that involve formatting, the playscript was very difficult to follow due to erroneous breaks in the lines of text. Read King Lear as a physical book.

This 'interpretation' alongside the original makes for much easier reading, while making the original so readily available also gives one the 'texture' of how the original felt. There is so much meaning and so much feeling contained in this play that the interpretation is essential unless one is able to interpret all the old English terms by oneself. So, I will certainly purchase further editions by this author's interpretations for more appreciation of the many plays of Shakespeare.

Like I say about all Shakespeare: the Arden versions are my favorite. I own about a third of the Canon in them already. The footnotes are my favorite parts about it, and they're great because I don't have to carry my Lexicon around everywhere.King Lear is a brilliant play, all around. Between the family ties, the love and lust, and just the crazy existential dialogue, it's just a great read all-around.

The Modern Library/RSC Shakespeare series IS a very valuable addition. Inexpensive edition of the plays, helpful scene-by-scene summaries of the action, etc. But by far the most valuable part of the half dozen volumes I have studied is the "In Performance" sections. This is what sets this series apart from most others. Here, are performance histories detailing a variety of historic interpretations, interviews with contemporary directors and actors, revealing how they interpreted the text, and turned it into a stage drama. This Lear volume, unfortunately, is marred by the "temporally ethnocentric" and gross overemphasis upon the 1970 Peter Brook production, which perversely saw Lear as a Beckett or Brecht play. Instead of Shakespeare's profound, nuanced picture of a complex world of good and evil, with glimpses of transcendent, redeeming dimensions, we are given--as the proper touchstone to all future presentations--an absurdist, nihilistic vision of life, deliberately removing all affirmation of the worth of life, and of a distinction between good and evil! Hard to believe? Cf. pp. 166 ff. "Productions of Lear would {could?} never be the same after this." ??Even in this flawed volume, there is much to learn. And most of the other volumes I have studied in this series are not marred by such imbalanced "Mod" decadence. I hope the volume on TWELFTH NIGHT, with its gratuitous, stressed homosexualizing of several relationships, is not a sad omen for future volumes in the series.

"King Lear" is Shakespeare's most profound utterance. It is a work whose theme is love; its major concern is with the centrality of love in the formation of character and with justice, both social and divine. The final scene, which confirms this reading, is one of the great achievements of world literature. The play opens with the aging king dividing his kingdom among his three daughters in return for their declarations of love. King Lear gives love uncontrollably and expects to be loved in the same fashion. He tells us that he loved the little one, Cordelia, best (I.i.137, 245, & 336) and we must thus assume the most violent resentment on the part of the two elder daughters, who have learned to say not what they feel but what they ought to say. Cordelia's honestly proclaims that her future husband will of necessity have to share in her love with her father and this is understood by the latter as a complete rejection, worthy of curses and banishment. The "subplot" concerning Gloucester's two sons, Edgar and Edmund. We can understand Gloucester's love for both of his children as a relatively recent phenomena having required the gradual overcoming of his embarrassment at his younger son, Edmund's, illegitimacy (I.i. 10). That Edmund has overheard his father's disparaging opening comments to Kent is confirmed by his paraphrasing of them in the second scene (I.ii. 18) and that this shaming has been a part of Edmund's experience since childhood appears probable in light of his final, transformative reaction to the unexpected and unknown feelings of love and pity experienced by him at the end of the play. The motif of "nothing," "nothingness" is hammered throughout the play. Having given away his love and receiving none from his remaining daughters Lear becomes 'nothing,' ontologically empty ("Lear's shadow"). Edgar, likewise experiences his rejection by his father - on faulty and conspiratorial premises - as an annihilation of his being ("Edgar I nothing am"). "He childed like I fathered," says Edgar of his godfather Lear. The comparison is that between two egos who know only the need to love and have been annihilated by the rejections they have experienced from the individuals whom they love. Edgar's transformation into Tom of Bedlam is not only a practical disguise but an acting out of this loss of identity (consider that he continues to use mad Tom's vocal mannerisms even in soliliquy [III.vii.126]) and his refusal to reveal himself to his father perhaps until he is ready to undertake an act which will justify his being loved again (III.vii. 121-124).Those who love give away all; those who feel no love take everything in order to make up for the emptiness. Edmund, Regan, Goneril and Cornwall seem always conscious of their desire to conquer even more power. Yet those who suffer hardship in this play seem to react in two ways - 1) they experience *ever increasing degrees of empathy,* by which they commit themselves to the relief of others through acts of, and belief in, social justice, and 2) they *imagine a system of divine justice,* by which they attempt to reconcile themselves to what's been lost. Edgar testifies that he has witnessed madmen, buffeted by nature, threatening others to do them enforced "charity" by piercing their own numbed arms in terrifying display. We have just seen such a thing occur with Edmund in Act II, scene i. We also know that he has called upon Nature as his goddess. Thus what we have here (like 'the Turk' in "Othello") is a rare Shakespearean metaphor: Edmund is Nature. King Lear's own pronouncement to the howling storm on the heath - "Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire, are my daughters... I never gave you kingdom, call'd you children/ You owe me no subscription: then, let fall/ Your horrible pleasure" further illustrates the point. In "King Lear," Nature is the lack of love. It is loveless and existential. It is godless; god and the astrological being an ego defense. It is "nothing."The poetry of "King Lear" is magnificent, perhaps not quite achieving the measureless heights of "Macbeth" or "Othello," but sonorous and extraordinarily beautiful. The two feuding brothers, Edgar and Edmund, are among Shakespeare's most profound creations. The Duke of Cornwall is one of his great monsters. And King Lear is one of his most tragic heroes. The Folgers editions conflates the Quarto and Folio editions. This is common practice for Shakespeare but both versions are so different (Shakespeare died before he could edit his complete ouvre for publication) that many editors have recommended to their readers that they embrace either one or the other. I personally would not recommend this since I think thematically the work is more difficult to interpret without the combining of a few lines found in only one or the other of the two editions (Q's "He childed like I fathered," not found in F, goes a long way towards explaining Edgar's character). There are so many classic scenes in this masterpiece of masterpiece, and so much characterization filled with insight and wisdom, and subtlety in its construction and beauty in its poetry, that reading or re-reading this play is an experience quite unlike any other. It is *the* major work by one of *the* major artists in world culture.

love this book! i had the Hans Christian Andersen story of little mermaid read to me as a child but when i came to USA i just couldnt find it anymore. Disney just distorted the story too much. when i found this book through Usborne Books (UK publisher) i was in heaven. yes, its a sad ending and yes its not all peachy-they-lived-happily-ever-after, but its a fairy tale world, where mermaids live and talk, and witches make spells and potions, and people dont often figure well into those stories.illustrations are beautiful and the story stays true to the original fairytale. this book is a treasure to have for anyone looking for originals.

I actually am a huge fan of the little mermaid, it a classic story that I grew up around, from the Disney edition, to the original and even the Brother's Grimm one. I am all to new views of the story, i didn't even mind when the Sea Witch seemed to be a Jellyfish, but I will have to admit.. although the book did start off very strong, and I was fine with that. It faded out towards the end. It seemed to miss, or lack depth to it... the illustrations are beautiful though, I will give it that. It also another point of view on the book, I just wish it had more towards the end then it gave.
