II was very disappointed in reading this (and I only read it because of the upcoming release of the movie adaptation) to find that about 90% of this is actually Jane Austen's canon. There is nothing new as far as the basic plot but Seth Grahame-Smith adds a word, a sentence, a phrase or as much as a paragraph here or there in order to insert something or other about Zombies or what he takes for comedy. And at times these additions are totally outré, out of place and then ignored by the characters. For example: at about 10% we have the scene at Netherfield in which Elizabeth has come down to the drawing room after being with Jane, who has a terrible cold, and Caroline states to Darcy, “You write uncommonly fast.” Darcy: “And you prattle uncommonly much.” More canon from C. and Darcy then says, “And how odious indeed that I should so often suffer to write them in your company.”…etc., etc., etc. These snide little remarks from Darcy are inserted and there is no reaction...from Caroline or from Elizabeth? Then another example of a sentence dropped into place with its adding nothing to the goings-on: at 37% - “Apparently overcome with excitement, Charlotte dropped to the ground and began stuffing handfuls of crisp autumn leaves in her mouth.” No reaction from those around her?And I have to add these sexual innuendos, and he thinks to get a laugh. I groaned. @63% (Mr. Darcy has shot some zombies on Pemberley grounds while Elizabeth and the Gardiners are visiting.) “She remembered the lead ammunition in her packet and offered it to him. ‘Your balls, Mr. Darcy?’ He reached out and closed her hand around them, and offered, ‘They belong to you, Miss Bennet.’” Out of the blue – Really? And when Jane asks Elizabeth when she realized she was in love with Darcy “…I hardly know when it began. But I believe I must date it from my first seeing the way his trousers clung to those most English parts.”Then must you additionally portray Mrs. Gardiner as having adulterous behavior? @ 64% “…she set off in quest of her former acquaintance, and (unbeknownst to the sleeping Mr. Gardiner) her evening was spent in the satisfactions of intercourse renewed after many years’ discontinuance.” Is this really necessary? It, again, adds NOTHING to the plot! The Gardiners have always been favorites of mine and I don't like to see this written of her.There are so many WONDERFUL variations written in JAFF and if you want to use one with paranormal characters and stories I can easily find others which are not only the author’s own creations but also a better story line; not this man’s simple adding to the best of stories. Oh, I do know why a paranormal tale was selected by Hollywood: what with Twilight, Grimm, Vampire Diaries, Once Upon a Time, etc, being so popular but it seems the fact that this author wrote Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows simply gave him the connection and the Hollywood crowd took the easy way of finding a Jane Austen tale with paranormal shades.Elizabeth in this tale is a different character: she refers to herself as the bride of death. And she has some grim thoughts when confronted by annoying or even bad behavior: thoughts of chopping off a sister’s head, of both cutting out Darcy’s heart and cutting off his head to present to Jane as revenge for how he separated Bingley from Jane.The activity with the zombies does not provide a grand adventure, a teaming up of ODC to win a battle, but rather some occasional skirmishes: walking into Meryton, visiting a church, the Netherfield Ball, etc. our characters are beset upon by the undead and they use their skills to dispatch one and all. There is some argument about whether having trained in China or in Japan has provided the best Masters and there is also the matter of the architecture at Pemberley being rendered in the Oriental manner.So do you have to read this book to anticipate the movie? NO. As most is Jane Austen’s canon you know what to expect. Way over priced as it is not creative at all.

THIS REVIEW CONTAIS SPOILERS!After seeing the movie, I decided I should probably read the book. It was dreadful (pun intended).I understood this to be a re-write of P&P, but with the assumption that zombies existed and Lizzie Bennet engaged in war against them. I expected zombies to be integral to the plot and the quality to similar to Austen’s original work.Instead, it felt like Grahame-Smith just replaced words in Austen’s story with the word zombie. Most of the time, the mention of zombies made no sense in the sentence or scene. It seemed the zombies where just dumped in without consideration for how they connect to the plot. It ruined the story. The idea of Lizzie as a warrior was fantastic, but the execution was cheesy, amateurish, and ridiculous. The constant references to their time in China and the over-the-top training they supposedly received – seemed ludicrous and stupid. If they were so well trained, Lizzie wouldn’t lose control and nearly behead Darcy just for insulting her. Lame. And zombies weren’t the only thing dumped in. Grahame-Smith also added odd things that had no influence on the story - like Mrs. Gardner having an affair with an old boyfriend. Why would you add that in?My other main complaint is the inconsistencies in the story. For example, at the time of the story, zombies have been around for 20+ years. So why do they still have zombies coming up from the earth, new, each spring. Why aren’t people cutting the heads off – in particular because it is the law? And after a while, with all the roving bands of militia, the warriors like Elizabeth and her family, and Darcy and his family - do you still have these large packs of zombies? After a while, you’d simply kill all the ones above ground, and dig up and kill all the ones in the graves? The population seems to shift it’s attitudes towards zombies based on whatever suites the plot at the time. This creates characters that change – one page they are ignoring basic zombie safety, the next berating other characters for their lack. There was also a lack of consistency in the supposed British manners – sometimes it seemed society praised the skills of the warrior and others, the girls were shunned and whispered about for carrying sword.In the end, I had to shift my thinking. By treating it as I would, say, an episode of Power Rangers, meaning, I suspend hope or expectation of consistency or reality, I assume the author is an amateur and the intended the story for a immature audience, was I able to finish this book. It almost was enjoyable once I stopped expecting it to be good. Not sure how this made it to the top of the best-seller list with it being so dreadful…..

WOW. What a great book and is worth a read. It’s sincere and everything that you would hope it would be. There are two aspects to this book, one is a candid conversation between a mother and a son, and the other is…well, a lot of the family gossip. It mirrors the conversations that many people hope that they have once in their lifetime with their own eldest family member, when they themselves are adults.It is a conversation, but done in the style of Anderson Cooper, almost being his own investigative journalist regarding his own family. However, unlike situations in which Cooper simply asks questions and keeps moving, he discusses his own responses, his own feelings, and explores elements from his own background and experiences. A great example is Cooper mentioning how he was afraid to tell his mom he was gay because of being afraid of how she would react because of the rumors that her own mother was gay. Instead the mother essentially responds with, “Yeah, I knew, all your friends were gay,” and does the motherly thing of refocusing on the question of her son regarding her own mother and discusses her mother’s sexuality and her own views on sexuality, which have changed over the years and views that it is fluid.There is also some really unique insights into the different family members, providing a history of each one as Anderson asks, going so far as to describe houses and ways that money was made. There is also a slight element of mother’s give a damn being broken at 91 and even letting her son know about sex and the firs time she no longer had to fake an orgasm, which was one of the attractive aspects of who she dated. This is also couched in the context on reflections of her own insecurities being a young girl and growing up, as well as why she stayed in some horrible marriages.The writing style of this book is easy and fluid. There are interjections in-between conversations that give a quick and easy reference to the backstory of a particular family member or some occasions of the family in general. There are also points where Cooper mentions that he watches a YouTube video that has a family member, or his mother, and it’s actually quite easy to look up that information and follow along. The responses of Cooper are often shorter, but pull in normal colloquialisms, something that shows a bit of a generational divide the two, such as YouTube; whereas his mother may respond with a quote, or just simply go off of the comment mentioned.Vanderbilt’s responses are much more elaborate, detailed, and a bit of a train of thought around an initial point Cooper asks and that his mother makes a winding way in telling a story, but this is for the best because it is in this portion you can see a lot of recollections about her life, where she has been, and her understanding in hindsight. There is a lot of brutal honesty as well, such as her own insecurities early in life, acknowledgement she probably was not the best parent, recognition that she and Cooper probably would have been closer if he was a daughter, the death of her husband (Cooper's father), and later the death of Coopers brother, Carter (her son).A great book all around, it gives insight into the family’s meeting of one another, Coopers’ own father, and clarifications on his own understanding of family gossip from years of growing up. There is a lot that may mirror experiences that some adults have been fortunate enough to have snippets of with a family member, but is the extended version of insight into a family that probably has a lot more gossip and rumors surrounding it than one’s own and a few more trips to Europe on whims than most people experience in a lifetime.

I love this book. I live in the Palm Springs desert and have always looked up to Anderson. My Mother and I had a very good relationship, but cancer took her away at 79. I just loved the exchanges between Anderson and Gloria. It was touching on so many levels. I am also a gay man and my Mother was very supportive me of as well. I was a teacher for 39 years. I would give this book and its two authors an A++ !!!Ray M. Smythe

No matter how close we are to our parents (as I was to my father who passed away last year at 98) there are still things not said and subjects not fully probed. For example my father had an older brother who like Rosemary Kennedy was born retarded due to a birth accident and also like her was lobotomized and placed in a facility. Although I was nine when he died I never met him and my father and I never really talked about it (though it was always on his mind).After almost losing his very famous (and very illustrious) mother Gloria Vanderbilt just before her 91st birthday, news anchor Anderson Cooper embarks on his toughest interview via a year-long email exchange. They discuss everything (sometimes to the point of exhaustion): her very tough childhood (including the famous custody trial); her four marriages (Anderson was her last child by her last husband); his father’s sudden and tragic death when Anderson was 10 and how he and his mother began the process of forming a long-overdue mother-son relationship; Anderson’s sexuality (a subject totally missing from his original memoir); and most tragically his older brother’s suicide.I recommend this book with reservations. While touted as an unscripted email exchange it does not read that way. Gloria tends to explain events with so much background (many of which were already covered in her many autobiographies) that one wonders why Anderson Cooper, an award-winning newsman, did not already know about them. Plus there is so much repetitive detail that you really need a prior interest in both Gloria and Anderson to get through it. But many will find its unique approach both interesting and perhaps cathartic. Personally I wished I had this same exchange with my father.

Interesting premise for the book -- an interview conducted over the span of a year by Anderson Cooper with his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt.I thought that the strongest part of the book was the life of Gloria from the time she was born until her first marriage. Considering that she had a childhood and teen years that were bereft of actual "family" -- as in -- a mother and father from whom she could receive love, care, guidance etc. it's amazing that her later life wasn't more messy than it was. It was definitely interesting to learn her feelings on the "trial of the century" and being known as the "poor little rich girl." It was equally interesting and I thought, quite honest of her, to admit that when she grew older and attempted to "connect" with her mother that she found it impossible to do it because they literally did not know one another and could not find a way to discuss what had happened between them when the trial occurred and she was a child of ten caught in the middle of the situation between her mother and her aunt.I felt that the last section of the book was less compelling because it went away from actions and instead was more about philosophy of life, love etc on the part of Gloria. I thought that Anderson Cooper, too, was quite brave to step forward and speak about his own life considering that he is in the middle of living his life as a public figure on television whereas his mother is nearing the end of hers and it's not as difficult to speak about painful experiences once they have passed as opposed to when you are younger and still facing them each day.Overall it is an interesting book and I think that both parties tried to be as honest as possible in their responses and comments.Overall, I enjoyed the book

This is the best primer on the basics of financial statements imaginable. It explains them in a clear and logical way for the benefit of anyone who is not an accountant. Better yet, it shows how they connect with each other and tie together. Over the years I have bought dozens and dozens of copies of its editions for in-house training of non-financial managers in my companies.

It's a good read. However, I was already acquainted with most of the knowledge being taught.from accounting courses at universities. The most important lessons I learned are: the interconnections between the financial statements,what negative cash-flow means, how companies can massage their numbers and the meaning of a CPA's opinion. Not bad.

I'm a FR newbie and the textbook for my MBA class was just confusing me. I was so lost and felt like I couldn't catch up because the textbook was in a foreign language. Then I got this book... This book has visuals that helped me connect the dots between IS, CF, and BR in a way that was logical and made sense in my mind! And the language was simple and really helped make sense of what I couldn't in the textbook. As a brand marketer who was a history/English undergrad, this helped me in my financial reporting MBA class more than I can say!!

This book covers the relationship between the accounts in the financial report and touch a little bit on some possible manipulations in the accounts. The explanation given were simple and straightforward. However, this book may not be suitable for beginners that just learnt about financial report. It is intended for readers who have been familiar with financial reports and wanted to strengthen their concepts. I would recommend this book together with some other books to get the full picture of what is going on.

Fantastic book, reads like a workbook, so easy to understand. I use these lessons on a weekly basis in my practice of law and also personally when I try to understand macro level news stories. I give copies as gifts. A Classic for a reason.

Fantastic book for understanding the three main tools in a financial report. This book explains "Cash Flow Statement", "Income Statement" and "Balance Sheet" in great detail along with how the various numbers tie to gether.

In my point of view this book should be recommended for all managers who want to have clear understanding of all basic moments of the business they are involved. Blake (not Tom) Mycloskie has written a short but fairy satisfying book that is part company history and part motivational business guide. The nice twist from Mycloskie's perspective is his belief that we are in an era where private companies can directly address public concerns in a constructive way that is mutually beneficial. Most of his ideas seem to be more geared towards new companies and generating inspiration for a way to serve customers and a charitable cause, but he tries to acknowledge that its never a bad time to do a good thing.The part that I found the most interesting was his description of just how barebones you can (and probably should) be when a company is still struggling make it past year one. His stories of handing off the same phone to different people in the same apartment to "transfer departments" is rather entertaining, and for someone who is still pondering the possibilities, this lays it out pretty plainly. Most people will believe you're the real deal with only a few things, a decent business card, a good website and a clear message. His message about how to treat employees and customers as part of the "family" of the company is also inspiring, he sounds like a great guy to work for or with.I don't much care for the format that Blake borrows from a number of different motivational books where he'll start a chapter out with "let me tell you a story" then give you some anecdote that touches on the topic that he's going to cover in detail in that chapter. Its been done to death and I find most anecdotes to be rather uninteresting (I'm interested in HIS insight, not someone else's story).I would only recommend a buy for someone who finds the TOMS story in itself to be interesting. The overall tone is that of one long motivational speech, which isn't bad at times, but you can get that just about anywhere. I'm glad I got a free review copy. This would make a good library read, but I don't think this book offers enough unique value to warrant purchasing. Its good, with a good message, but not great.

Fabulous book! Really gave me motivation to get my project Arteforelephants (a site that raises money for conservation charities through the sale of fine art) off of the ground! It gave me a ton of information in a relaxed, informal manner. If you are looking for hard core- "How to make a business plan", "How to do a cash flow analysis" type of book than look elsewhere! This book isn't that. I found the best use for this is when I feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of what I am trying to do; I can go back to this book and draw on Blake's words of wisdom and success to keep me going through the "what the heck was I thinkin'?'" times. I hope the author will experience great gratification that his work is out there, germinating a billion side projects!

Inspired by Mycoskie's brilliant book, I wrote Your Mark On The World.As a mid-career sabbatical, I was living in China, teaching business at South China University of Technology, and trying to decide how to spend the rest of my career. I made it a point to read several books that might help me find some direction, some focus and when I finished reading Start Something that Matters, I began to find some real clarity.Of course, Mycoskie's story begins with the story of how he started Tom's shoes. The book is worth reading just to get that story. Who wouldn't want to launch a successful, $100 million business in a space as crowded as shoes? Reading the story allows you to understand how Mycoskie's world view informs his entrepreneurship to make him a more successful leader, to say nothing of his humanitarian bona fides.The book combines interesting, personal anecdotes with sound business advice, leaving readers confident and ready to step out on their own to do something that matters. Mycoskie's style is a pleasure to read.The book is a great read for anyone interested in business or humanitarian causes. It is a quick read and you won't confuse this with your Management 101 textbook--thank heaven. It's not a soup to nuts "how to" start a business so much as a treatise that will help you find the passion to do what you've always dreamed of doing. The book perfectly executes it's goal.I absolutely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in social entrepreneurship, the fashion industry, marketing, charity or business.

What I didn't know was how to distinguish between the ones I might actually enjoy reading and the others. This book gives links to the author's website that gives top picks based on reviews so you are more likely to actually download a good book. Trust me, there is some really awful literature out there and I usually find this out about fifteen minutes after my plane has taken off or the car has started moving and then I am either stuck reading nothing or reading something terrible. Its really nice to have a resource to up my chances of liking the book I am downloading. I use my iPhone's Kindle App, but this book also goes in to the many benefits that are available on Kindle readers only such as a library where you can actually download books for free and return them just like at a physical public library. I may actually look into getting a Fire just for that alone!! This book also goes into the benefits of Amazon Prime for those who have an actual Kindle reader. I have Prime, but had no idea that there were book benefits, too, if I purchase a reader. I have always just used it for movies, TV and the free shipping. I read a lot and this book has definitely opened my eyes to some options for me to try new authors and genres without putting out money for something I may not even like. And I read fast so the expense of eBooks adds up to sizable bill for me each month. If you like reading, I highly recommend you check this out.Although I received this product for a discount, this is an unbiased and honest review and I can assure you that in no way affected my rating of this item.

This was the first book I picked up last year to find free books on the internet; It was a little helpful but I found a lot more on the web myself with a search engine then the book itself, including some Weber has listed. I was excited, at first, about his website to have the latest books he found for free. But after about a week, I started getting really frustrated about his categories of fiction and non-fiction; he places a lot of fiction in the non-fiction, which was really frustrating going back and forth only to find it was fictional. I tried repeatedly to contact Mr. Weber about this and never got a reply or his fixing of it on his site. Then I actually read his "about" statement, which is right there via his homepage, and was insulted beyond measure; He refers to us (the people looking for free ebooks and subscribe to his "crappy website"--- his words, not mine) as unemployed slobs who are couch potatoes with no interest in free ebooks. He also says he pretty much "smooths the way" for us to get on his website and download from Amazon and doesn't get what he deserves in return. And what he has to say about Amazon, itself, was not too flattering either. Not a smooth move, Weber. Then, I realized that he just goes on the Amazon Free Books site and just basically copies the links from the first and/or second pages. I have found a lot more sites that email me about free books who actually hunt for the goodies online, more than he has and does. Sorry people, but this is just a really frustrating website that he promotes in this book and I just wanted you to be wary of it. You would do better just to get on Amazon's 'free kindle books' site and browse yourself. That is what I am doing in lieu of ever clicking on the Kindle Buffet website again.

Honestly I wasn't so sure about how this product worked when I bought it. It is a wonderful little book on Kindle that gives you tips and instructions for people who just want to get started in the kindle world. The author has included a link to his own personal Web page! Which is mighty helpful in finding your next free or cheap kindle book, I have found a paranormal mystery which I can't wait to review.. but that's just what the first page offers the following chapters hives you step by step instructions to make the most out of your reader including ebooks, audiobooks, calculators... you don't even need a kindle. I could not even make eggs. My mom always did the cooking and now my wife did the same. I wanted to learn and found Laura on you tube. So I have read the recipes of foods we like. I bring my laptop in the kitchen and cook with Laura (Sorry Joe). My first adventure was Chicken Marsala, and Bam. Fantastic!! I surprised myself and my wife. I think she is a little jealous. Since I enjoy Laura on you tube, this is a natural progression. Mostly new recipes and easy to follow. I am glad she fulfilled her dreams and it shows. Thanks for sharing your expertise with the world. I added a picture of the eggplant I made using Laura. Another home run!

I love Laura Vitale and having her book is just amazing! I made several recipes and the were great...in fact I've made a lot of her recipes with a 98% success rate. I highly recommend this book...worth every penny!

I found Laura In The Kitchen on YouTube to be what worked best for me to learn how to cook pizza on a stone two years ago. I then made my own binder with many of her recipes from my computer. I like many of these recipes because pasta, fish, chicken, and vegetables taste good and are what I think to be healthy. I skip making most of the deserts, but I might try making some with less of the unhealthy items added. A person could go to a computer and find most any recipe to make just about any type of food, but I already have more invested in computer ink than the cost of this very nice book with beautiful pictures. The tomato soup is the best that I have ever tasted. I hesitated to believe, add broth if needed. Most soup recipes need way more broth or water than what is listed. Laura's tomato soup is perfect for me, with no broth or water added. Another reason that I like this book is the fact that the recipes do not require a visit to several stores to obtain the ingredients, but enough ingredients to make food much higher quality than what the average family has available.

Laura, I love your recipes! This book is great because her dishes are classy and comforting, with ingredients that are not difficult to find nor are the recipes too advanced for the home cook. I would love to see her have a series of books that encompass more of her YouTube channel recipes. Laura is very talented at what she does - she reminds me of Ina Garten in that her dishes are classics, elevated.

I have been following Laura's YouTube channel for a few years now and had tried out a number of her recipes and was happy with how they turned out. I was super excited about her releasing a book and now I finally have it! The book is excellent even if one doesn't make all of the dishes in it. There are lots of helpful hints and other tips which can take your own cooking to the next level. The layout of the book is very clean and professional. The font size is perfect and it is very pleasing. The full color photographs are stunning. The recipe presentation is intuitive and works well. I love that Laura has written short commentaries which accompany each recipe which personalizes it even more. This is a great first cookbook from Laura and I highly recommend it.

I love Laura in the Kitchen I watch her video all the time she is a fantastic cook but I was not impress with the recipe of this book compare what she has on line she could have done better with the choices of recipes maybe the next one but I'm really not impress with it sorry

My family loves Laura Vitale recipes! I have made countless recipes and every single one has been a hit. Simple and not too many ingredients. This particular cookbook has more of her Italian dishes that might not be as kid friendly, but for adults who love Italian food, this is a MUST! We have found many recipes in her website as well as her YouTube channel. I do like her Italian favorites, but for a more family/kid friendly book I don’t think I’d recommend.

As an Italian American myself, I am picky when it comes to Italian cookbooks. This one is a winner! Beautifully done, the recipes are sophisticated yet simple. Delicious but not exotic. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for authentic, family style Italian delights. I loved it so much I am buying a copy for my mom. You won't be disappointed - Mangia!

Love Laura's You Tube channel. I have used many of her recipes and they have NEVER let me down. I highly recommend this cookbook and wish her the best in her future endeavors...Hope she comes out w/ a sequel!
