I have read about 4,500 books, mostly thriller/mystery. This one, though highly rated, was awful. Why? Because there is no possible way a decent person could like any of the main characters. The "protagonist" is an adulterer, the "damsel in distress" should have left her abusive husband, money be damned, and moved on. I have read Mr. Ellis's' second novel and it is oh-so-much-better (a protagonist that, while somewhat flawed, is very easy to be empathetic with). Note to all aspiring mystery/thriller authors: You have to have a character you can like, root for, and a villain that needs to be put in his/her place. To have a book full of characters that are all basically bad people, well, why not just watch the 10:00 news???

Line of Vision went south for me. I slogged through the first hundred pages all the while looking for excitement and there was none. I then went back to the reviews and there seemed to be enough good ones to egg me on. What a mistake! The rest of the book got no better. Perhaps if he cut the story in half and increased the size of the print (so it created more pages) he would get the same size book but half the verbiage. By the way, I usually check the one and two stars first but I forgot to do it for this bookThat is where to get the unvarnished truth about the story.

(Some spoiliers) From the outset, I liked the book. It is a legal thriller told from the perspective of the defendant. That, in and of itself, is a slightly different take than most in the genre. That being said, however, I became slightly frustrated with Marty Kalish. Even though the book is told by him, I didn't get the sense that I really knew who he was. I guess this is partially the point, but I found myself getting frustrated with him - I think I felt like he was misleading the reader. The book starts with Marty standing outside his "lover's" house for his weekly peepshow - and turns into a murder - although the reader isn't completely sure who did what. The concept is interesting - but, there was something about how Marty talked about his affair with Rachel that I didn't wholeheartedly buy. And, as the story goes on and she begins saying that he was stalking her - I actually found that far more believable than the idea that the two were having an affair. So, at the end, while I was satisfied with the twists and turns that the book took, I also found myself thinking that there was still something which seemed off.Despite this, however, it was a great effort by a new writer. I liked the different perspective than the typical legal thriller. I also appreciate the fact that this book makes you think about who you ever really know and how different a story can be depending on whose perspective you are hearing. The book lags around the middle - but, for the most part, it kept my attention. So, if you are wondering whether or not you should read it -- yes you should! It was definitely interesting; the courtroom scenes are wonderfully concocted; and the ending is satisfying. What else could you want from a book?

Seemed like it started off slow I mean it starts off with I did it , but there are several twist and turns that are very intriguing. Like I said in the beginning I use kept going because I don’t like quoting a book. But it picked up and really got me hooked.

O have read another book by this author, but was reading something Philip Margolin wrote saying this was one of the best mysteries he had read in a long time I bought it and started it immediately don't start it unless you have time to finish it,it's that good. I highly recommend it.

I rate this novel 3.5 stars. Let me start by saying I really enjoyed reading this first effort by David Ellis and the courtroom scenes were riveting. Maybe the author set a pretty high standard which made it more disappointing for this reader when things went horribly wrong with the messy ending. The biggest problem I had with this novel were the inconsistencies. One scene in particular highlights the highs and lows I found while reading. (SPOILER ALERT) The unidentified first person narrative that pops up during trial that tells us it is a 15 year old boy who discovered the identity of Rachels' secret lover. At first reading I was perplexed, what is this? Is this boy the character who has been providing the italicized narration in the novel? Well that would change things. We discover that this was a one time narrative by the 15 y.o. who obtained very explicit sexual video & audio of Rachel's tryst. How cleverly the author has laid the ground work for the unethical behavior of the private detective at the end. However, Rachel was extremely careful with Marty to make sure NO ONE ever knew about them so why so cavalier about Rudy?We also find out that Marty's personal recollection at the very beginning of the book is an outright lie. No fair! The author uses a lie to lead us, unfairly, in other directions. Also, the author certainly knew his stuff when writing about the trial which confuses when the DA's office continues prosecution of Marty after he cleverly frames Rudy near the end of his own trial? This would not happen in the real world and the author should know this being an attorney himself by trade. It turns into a big soap opera! The whole story is recapped for us by Marty just in case the reader didn't get it. But the worst infraction, in my view, was Marty's emotional reflection that having gone through this experience, it has taught him that you never know what a married woman is feeling and that one should be more empathic. What!?! His mother cheated on his saintly father throughout his childhood and his own affair with a married woman proved her to be manipulative and cruel. What part of using you for a sacrificial lamb to cover her other affair did Marty not understand? Or finding out that the real object of Rachel's exhibitionist strip tease was that other man and the fact she knew Marty was watching too only played into her own twisted plans? What happened in no way fits with the Hallmark moment as written.Sure I had problems with this novel but still, it's better then most offerings out there. This author knows how to write a good story and I look forward to reading more from David Ellis.

Saying too much will ruin the suspense for the reader.. just be aware... lots of twists and turns in this book... great court scenes that will keep you turning the pages... I am ready for mr Ellis next book...
