Our stray Cocker Spaniel, picked up after seeing him pushed out of a pickup truck, which then zoomed westward, lived happily among our stable of dogs from a little teacup poodle to an old English sheep dog.Lucky, we named him, became the victim of terminal pancreatitis. He tried to gain the Rainbow Bridge in dignity with Shirley, my loving wife, sitting on the floor with Lucky's head on her lap and petting his head and back, while speaking loving words to him.After the second day and night of this , Lucky was in such pain that we decided to take him to our loving, caring veterinarian, Dr. Alison Pillsbury, who assured us that Lucky would never have recovered from his ailment and that the most loving thing we could do for Lucky would be to help him find the Bridge.So we kissed our pal goodbye and he seemed happy to be led by a dog-loving veterinarian who would help him find the fabulous Rainbow Bridge.About two weeks later we received a letter from the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine informing us that a paid scholarship in Lucky's name had been received from Dr. Pillsbury.Shirley's gone now - to seek her own Rainbow Bridge to her next great adventure, but I shall mix a few pinches of her ashes with those of Lucky's to be scattered around the area where they walked with me in the fullness of life.73, 88, rtwray@hotmail.com
Made me cry. How can humans be so cruel ? I adopted a dog that became the love of my life. I was told that she was abused. When I brought her home, she was so frightened. She cowled if I even raised my voice. Eventually she came to trust us. I had her for 12 years and I am certain that she would have followed us through fire if I asked her to. I miss her every day. I can't imagine what she went through before I got her. She was so grateful to have a loving home.
What a beautiful story that communicates the value of even "the least of these." Written from the point of view of the dog, the story details the emotions he experiences at the hands of an abusive animal hoarder, then at a rescue facility and finally in a forever home. It breaks your heart to think that such a dog would actually worry about whether he had been good enough, and if somehow that made him deserve abuse. Some would say it's ridiculous to think dogs even have emotions, much less that they would analyze them the way Probst does. But those of us who love these furry critters (and who possibly anthropomorphize just a bit), know that they do have emotions. Whether or not they're capable of the kind of analysis displayed in the story is irrelevant, Probst puts you in the place of the dog experiencing his life and it's believable on all levels. I'm a laid-back, mild-mannered, soft-spoken person who rarely experiences a violent thought. But I really wanted to knock the abuser in this story upside the head, however fictional he might have been!
Told from the dog's view, the star of this book states at the beginning that he never was a hero, that he was just an ordinary dog. However, he was indeed a hero amid he trials he endured (taken I am sure from the author's work at animal shelters) and the courage he ultimately found to trust and hope again. This was a pleasant read, party because it wasn't another 'dead dog' story. It was fiction with a purpose - to raise awareness of pets in animal shelters who only need another chance at a 'life worth living'. After I read this book, I contacted a rescue organization and adopted an older dog who has harder to place because he was about 10 yrs old. He is wonderful, so good, is adapting quickly, already house trained and very wise. He is lying at my feet as I write this review.
Short story giving good insight into the life of far too many animals in puppy mills and hoarding situations. PLEASE ADOPT, don't shop! I share my life with two adorable rescue dogs that I adopted when they were rescued as adults from puppy mills. One was treated horribly like Lester. Now she is happy and sweet but still suffers from memory of her early years. Stand up against cruelty of all kinds, Please!
Having had to put several animals down that I loved very dearly, it really touched me to think that maybe they were ready to go and leave the pain behind. I don't know that there is a Rainbow Bridge, but I like to think there is. The book is a work of fiction but a sweet one. It also makes you aware that there are a lot of mistreated animals in rescue shelters just waiting for that special person to come pick them out and give them a loving home.
I am a sap for these animal stories. This is a heartwarming short story about a shelter dog - in his own voice. Having owned shelter dogs (and cats) this guy tugged at my heart strings. Shelter dogs make the best pets because I really think they DO remember and are forever grateful. They can endure all sorts of neglect and abuse - and still have hearts full of forgiveness, loyalty and love.Got my 99 cents worth and then some.Plus half the proceeds go to an animal shelter.
It's speculation, of course, when we humans attempt to interpret how an animal feels. However, all animals of higher intelligence have certain emotional needs in common and they express themselves much as we do with the exception of speech. I have learned much from my own dogs... and cats.... over the years. They have made me a better person. I hope you'll enjoy this brief book.
