I bought this because I love history and wanted to supplement my daughter's AP Euro textbook that was a more difficult read. This book offers good information in a readable way that puts things into perspective. While a textbook is strictly facts, this book puts those facts into a coherent context.

Many find this book deficient; however I think it the best book on European history ever written. There is much that one cannot easily find in other sources. I like so much that I have purchased three versions (having 'used up' the previous ones).

Being an Irishman, like the rest of my fellow countrymen, I sometimes have a skewed view of my own country's history. Down with the English, thank god for St. Patrick and all the rest. What I like about Davies take on things is that straight from the first line of his considerably long intro/prologue, he lets the reader know that to go any further one may dispense with parochial terms like : England, Italy, and even Roman or Barbarian. His views on the symbiotic relationship between Christianity and Islam and how this relationship was vital in molding the modern 'Europe' is especially enlightening.I knew what I was getting into after reading Davies other tome, 'The Isles', so there was no surprise for me in store in this book. Some readers however might take offence to the authors bashing bashing of his peers, especially his own countrymen and their nationalistic views. To me but there is no better volume out there on the history on the vague and ambiguous are of lands that we call Europe.Be prepared to come away from this book with a totally different view on what it means to be not only European, but to be of this world, to be a believer in Christ, or a follower of Mohammad. Leave at the door your perceptions of what it means to be a speaker of Germanic or Romance or Slavic languages. This book will leave all your long held theories and beliefs in the dusts of history..

This is such an entertaining (and long) read (12 huge chapters). Davies does a great job by compiling an unimaginable amount of material on Europe into one single volume. His book covers basically everything from the geography of the European continent, to linguistics, mythology and most importantly, history since ancient times until the downfall of the Soviet Union and the rise of the European Union.Davies offers good skills as a writer even though some passages look dull. The problem when reading such a book for readers not familiar with the European history is that the reader is demanded to quickly absorb a huge number of names, dates and events complied into a quick survey volume. Perhaps, Davies could have given up on some details to allow readers a better grasp of the offered material. But details cover all subjects from the succession of Charlemagne to the formation of the English feudal system and the history of feudal families and European monarchies up to the two world wars and beyond. The book is certainly a reference work that belongs to the shelves of every researcher.

In addition to Davies rather incredible grasp of facts, he is a great writer, often with a rather sly sense of humor. Perhaps like other wanna-be history buffs, I've read many books on the "particulars" ranging from the Roman Empire, the Thirty Years War or whatever, most of which is forgotten after a few years. This book brings it all back - often times with a different slant - and nicely ties together they myriad of themes that made European history. As a minor warning, I found the first chapter on prehistory a bit of a turn off because of the lack of maps. Whilst one easily gets the general picture on migration paths, the particular geographic locations mentioned are a bit obscure - unless one happens to know where places like the Moldavian Gap are. This chapter is, in parts, a tad heavy and academic, and - unlike the rest of the book - lacking in maps. Aside from this rather slow start the rest is just great - couldn't put it down.

I read this for fun. It is a thorough book and covers most of the history of Europe. The writer is a bit condescending of other history writers at times, which makes it a little funny.Note the date of publishing as it ends shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Very interesting, but almost impossible to read in its Kindle version since the main text is constantly interrupted by what in the printed book would be footnotes or inserts, but here are massive disgressions that force the reader to go back and forth in search of the next paragraph. The maps, diagrams and plates look like poor quality photostats and are impossible to read or appreciate. A good book absolutely ruined by its traslation to digital form.

I lived in Europe for 3 1/2 years while in the Army. I lived in Germany and was deployed to Kosovo for over a year. I traveled to nearly 20 countries and countless cities in that time. This book was with me for it all. With this book Davies attempts the enormous task of trying to plot the entire history of Europe from its creation up until modern times. Although no work of this type could possibly be complete in one volume, Davies does a very good job in hitting almost everything you could want. This is essentially a reference book. It gives you a good starting point on almost any subject or period you are interested in. I would suggest a basic knowledge of European history before trying to read this cover to cover like I did.Even though it is rather bulky I took it with me on all of my travels. Every city I went to I used this to maximize my travel so that I could focus on what I thought would be most interesting. Lets face it a normal guidebook will bring you to the places a tourist would find interesting and not what is necessarily historically significant.Although there are a lot of books that are more specific than this work in any given area none are as complete a compendium as this work is. If you are a student of history then this book is a necessity.
