Tons of great photos in here that aren’t found anywhere else – most being from the personal collections of either the author or Commodore G.T. Marr – and are generally from the perspective of passengers or landside viewers of the ship (as opposed to the professionally photographed photos or promo shots that are more commonly seen). That’s not to say the photographs are of an amateur quality! Just that the perspective and style of the photos makes you feel like you’re seeing the ship firsthand as a passenger.The text is outstanding as well. Highly Recommended.

Nice, but I would recommend to buy the printed book not the kindle edition. While one can view the photos on the kindle, or an the app, it's better to view them full-size in the book.

Book was in good shape, but the writing left much to be desired. Information was repeated in a couple of places and the photos were out of date sequence. I would have liked to have the oldest photos first and then newer ones so I could see the progression through the years.

I love the history and photos of this great old liner which was before my time.

I can't say much more about it. Its fairly straight forward and in the usual format for these size of books with smallish photos and a bit of the usual history. There wasn't any reason for me to buy this other than I am an ardent fan and am always hoping to see that photo I've never seen before. I don't really spend much time on the text as its more about the visuals for me. I could give a Vicar's cuss about how many RPMs or torque she put out. She was fast, beautiful, and that is all that matters. I'm no engineer, I'm more of a design person. Enjoy it.

I purchased the blue book version, printed in 2014, and it is smaller than the orange one (2012). It is easy to carry around in my purse around Tokyo. I've been studying using this textbook in Tokyo parks, restaurants, coffee shops, on the densha (JR train), while walking....It has a wax-like coated cover (which is great given that Japan rains a lot) and gives it a nice, soft feel on the hands. I just wish there was a kindle formatted version too. Please, Mr. Kim, onegaishimasu.Personally, my core set for learning Japanese, the cream-of-the-crop best items, is as follows:1. Genki I and II, including the workbooks, 2nd edition - the textbook for UCLA Japanese classes. Absolute gem of a book. This is your go-to "traditional" textbook.2. Heisig's Remembering the Kanji - Remember 2000 kanji in 2 months? Yes. It's amazing.3. Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar (my cliff notes) - Great refresher for stuff you learned. This book is like the golden notebook that you stole from that A+ student in your college Japanese class.4. "Japanese" app by Renzo Inc. from the Apple Store. Includes wwwjdic dictionary, all conjugations for every word (volitional, transitive, past, present, polite form, etc.) , a built in flashcard builder, kanji stroke order videos for all kanji, and more from this sweet app. Absolute must purchase. This is like a super-dictionary. Don't have an iPhone? I've studied Japanese in classes, using various texts and methods, Rosetta Stone, and used Japanese daily while living in Japan, but this guide is something that I always come back to for a refresher. In my opinion, this is the best way, book study-wise, to learn Japanese. It explains Japanese in a way that makes far more sense that most grammar books teach it to you, and it prepares you to be ready with much more natural Japanese from the get-go. I also think it's a far more effective way of building your grammar.I remember reading this guide when it was just on the website, even before there was an app or PDFs for it, and it's still so useful to me now. I just had the PDF forever, not checking the website any longer, so I was not aware the book existed, and I was actually going to print out the PDF, but it would have been a costly undertaking ($40+). While this guide is definitely worth the cost of conventional textbooks, even, imagine my relief to find it for a very reasonable $18.Don't think twice about getting this guide. And if you don't want to pay for it, just use the app or the PDF on your computer/tablet. But for me it's worth it in printed form. And thank you, Tae Kim, for all your hard work in creating such a valuable resource for Japanese language learners.

Tae Kim is a badass. I've been studying Japanese off and on for years, both in a college setting, as weekly classes now that I'm out of college, and plenty of self study as well. But I started hitting a wall when trying to read untranslated manga, especially stuff aimed at younger demographics (re: shounen). There's a ton of slang and other content that doesn't make a lot of sense, even for well-studied academics.Enter Tae Kim's guide (Amazon removes links it seems, just google 'Tae Kim Japanese guide' to find it)I found it via googling a few things that confused me in manga, and Tae has a lot of awesome insights that are intuitive and easy to understand. He helps shed light on certain intricacies of the language that aren't fully explained in textbooks, and the slang sections alone are worth the price of admission. If you have zero Japanese experience it'll help you too, as it starts at the absolute basics, covers a ton of conjugations, everythng you'll need.This product on amazon is essentially a printed version of the online guide - I'm old school and like having physical copies of things to read, so I picked this up. It's the same content as the online guide, so you should easily be able to tell ahead of time if you'd like the print book (stop being lazy and just go look at it! ^_^). I give a 5/5 for the content.Where a star gets docked is for the book printing itself - I can't be certain, but it appears that each book is printed on demand (as the timestamp on the book was right around when I bought it). The problem is, the company chose to print all of the content with a HUGE margin (about 1.5 inches around the content on all side). This is a textbook-sized, thick book already, and having a huge amount of margin does nothing more than add considerable weight to the book. It's not a brick, but this isn't an easy book you can tote around on the bus. Hopefully the publishing company will consider printing the book smaller without the margin; it would be a lot lighter and wouldn't lose any of the value (and the cover is exactly as shown, there's no frills here, so it's not like you'd be missing out on any cover real estate)Regardless, if you've read Tae Kim's online guide and want a physical version, or want to support him (since the online guide is free), this is a great item to pick up.

Kate Morton is that rare breed of writers for me who totally and utterly has you captivated and hanging on her every word. She weaves the many threads of two stories into a complex and intriguing tapestry of secrets, red herrings and a world which is so vivid and evocative, it’s as if you could step through the cover and see it for yourself.The two stories, past and present wove seamlessly together although for me the story of the past was the most absorbing. What did happen that fateful midsummer night? As ever with Kate, you think you know, until the very end when you realise she’s been teasing you with something all along and you’re as lost in that big ramshackle garden as the children in the story.The idea of going back to an old house and discovering its secrets of what happened that fateful day is captivating. Alice in the present day is a mystery to herself and I particularly loved finding all about her in flashbacks to when she was an excited teenager. Oh and Eleanor and Anthony – I gasped when I found out what was going on and the events leading up to that midsummer night. In the present day, Sadie tries to unravel it all but her own story threatens to cloud her judgement. The stories worked very well together and added a real sense of intrigue.I was pulled and pushed in one direction after another – from 1933, back to 1911 and then back to 2003 but never once did I feel lost. The characters stories build and flow seamlessly and I particularly loved the idea that Alice was now a mystery writer and had followed her dreams. Oh to read a Diggory Brent novel now!It’s tricky to review without giving anything away but I totally recommend this for fans of a complex, intricate mystery which will take you on a journey and immerse you in the walls of a utterly captivating Cornish lake house.The Cornish setting is a real draw for us booktrailers who love to visit the settings of the novel and there's Polperro and many real life inspirations for which inspired Kate for her story. She sent us pics and locations and they're on our map. Happy travelling!

This novel is sprinkled with so many mysteries I couldn't help but take notes to capture all of my questions, clues, and the possible outcomes I was predicting. While all Kate Morton novels have a mystery or two (or five), The Lake House is her most overt mystery story, featuring a detective trying to unravel a cold missing persons case, as well as a mystery crime writer. My notes have about 30 questions I had while reading, each with multiple possible answers, so there's no shortage of mysteries to sink your teeth into. The story challenges the rules of the genre and sticks with Morton's usual focus on family secrets and shifting between time periods.There are so many wonderful themes that the book addresses: the cost of promises, effects of guilt, thoughts on motherhood, meaning of responsibility and right vs. wrong, and how perception can differ from truth. I am not normally a note taker while reading but in addition to capturing my unanswered questions I found myself jotting down thoughts on each theme as I pondered over what the book had to say, all the while wishing I could get my hands on essays that explored the book's use of each theme in more detail. It's that thought provoking. What Morton has to say about how guilt can affect perceptions of reality is particularly fascinating. She also has you questioning what it means to be honorable and if any lengths are too far to go for love and friendship.As others have mentioned, the ending is particularly tidy and feels entirely too coincidental. Towards the end of the book I found myself thinking "wouldn't it be amazing if... but no, that would be ridiculous and so unbelievable... buuuuuut it would still be amazing..." and my "dot dot dot" thought ending up being right. I wouldn't have minded if it were left at that final revelation but the last chapter was way too sunshine-y and saccharine for my taste. However, it far from spoiled the story. Without the last chapter it's a near perfect read and one of Morton's best.

If you use Outlook all the time, this is the perfect book to learn to get organized and use your time efficiently. However, I am finding today that more and more people are using separate online tools for calendar, mail, to-dos, etc. (I am a college instructor at a community college and I survey my students each semester to see what tools they use). For those looking for the techniques not using Outlook, I recommend David Allen's book "Getting Things Done" However for those that use Outlook, this book is a life saver for becoming efficient and more productive. The author, Sally McGhee, does have an update on her website for the few changes in the book from using Outlook 2007 to 2010.I recommend reading her book and doing things in the order she recommends. It is hard to see the benefits until it all comes together late in the book, but it is worth it in the end. You must have the discipline to keep on top of these methods, if you fall behind it will take a lot of work to get back into shape. If you keep up with the daily, weekly, monthly routines, you will find it amazing.

A little boring and repetitive along the way but mostly good advices, tips & tricks on how to increase productivity based on this awesome tool that is Microsoft Outlook.The author should update the book with the latest version of Outlook, the version that was presented is 2007, a 10 year old version, not a very smart way to sell a book if you use an outdated tool. Positioning the most notable improvements on the newest version of MS Outlook and how to best use them based on what's in the original book might help here. Just an idea. Time for a new edition, perhaps?

I implemented McGhee's system 4 years ago, and used this edition when we upgraded Outlook at work. I supervise teams of 10 people (more or less over the years) and I have not only used the system in this book to increase my own productivity, but that of the teams that I have supervised. My boss told me that she could see the results within weeks: I was more organized, responsive, and productive at work. I haven't used the system at home, but I clearly see how I could if I wanted to.Some advantages of this book:- It is practical and gives you step-by-step instructions on how to set up and maintain this system- It advises some conversation with your supervisors about productivity and expectations, and I found that to be a very useful set of conversations on their own- It gives you instructions on how to set up Outlook to do what is suggested- It gives you great strategies to deal with interruption and emergencies- I have found that it is sustainable over time. Yes, you have to invest time to maintain this system, but it isn't a huge investment of time, particularly given the payoff.Some disadvantages of this book:- The core of the is really 5 chapters that give you the basics for setting up the system. The rest is skippable.- It definitely takes time to set the system up. I had to put in a large number of hours over a month to get this going.Overall, this book is well worth picking up and seriously considering if you want to improve your productivity.

This book is NOT a Microsoft Outlook book! It lays out a methodology for determining what are truly you're unifying objectives, both personal and professional, and then it helps you get organized around only those things that support those objectives. If it doesn't support a unifying objective, then don't do it (delegate, go back and renegotiate the committment, etc). While I said this is not an Outlook book, it IS a book that will teach you to use all that Outlook has to offer in terms of managing e-mail, your to-do list, your calendar, etc... ALL in the name of accomplishing your unifying objectives.If you're like me (4,500 e-mails in my inbox when I read this book), it will take a significant investment in time to adopt this methodology. I spent the better part of the week between Christmas and New Years reading, organizing, deleting, etc to put the system in place. Here's the bottom line: IT HAS MADE AN AMAZING DIFFERENCE IN MY PRODUCTIVITY. I spend far more time working on things that support my goals and far less on distractions.IF you read the book and decide to implement the McGhee Productivity Solutions Workflow Model, I strongly suggest you purchase the accompanying $59 Outlook Add-in... it adds some great features to Outlook that make processing e-mail SOOO much faster. I downloaded the add-on trial and used it for 30 minutes before realizing just the Quick-File feature alone was well worth the cost... then I learned how to use the other half dozen features.GREAT book to get organized... but like any productivity methodology, if you think you can read the book, not make any changes in how you do things, and then expect magic to happen, don't bother.

Before 1,100 email in inbox with a total Outlook folder size of 500 MBAfter 80 or less emails in inbox with a total Outlook folder size of 350 MB.Even after only reading 1/4th of this book there was an immediate change in my work life. After reading all of the book my personal life started to improve.The only negative to this book is that it's so simple you'll wonder why you paid money for this information. However it's worth every penny you spend. I was even able to relay the concepts to other people to implement and these people saw an immediate improvement without even reading the book by just listening to what I could recite from my readings.

No one came to her rescue and when she finally got enough she killed him. Many believed her boyfriend assisted her but when questioned he ran away and left her to take the fall on her own. She was found guilty and sentenced to death because of course women do not have access to their now bodes. This story is important because it shows how slaves experienced trauma and when they rebelled to their mistreatment, they are punished by death.

This is required reading for American History Classes in some colleges.Celia was fourteen years old when John Newsom, an aging widower purchased her, she was raped on the way to the plantation. This book had loads of true facts about the crimes, inquisition, trials, the verdict, and the execution.Throughout the book were political events that took place in Missouri and Kansas, how they became states, the politics and their laws. At times it was difficult for me to stay focused, I was more interested in the lives of the people than the politics. In the end it's all about the slave owners, the laws and their slaves. It reads like a history book. This is one story that will stay with me a long time.

Excellent book on a rare case of an enslaved African woman brought to trial for the murder of her master who started to sexually abuse her on the way home from the auction. She was only fourteen. The specifics of the trial are placed in a historical context: 1850's. This non-fiction is a tragic story that accentuates the double jeopardy of enslaved African females at the time.

This riveting and slim book tells what it can of the story of Celia, a slave whose tragedy played out in rural Missouri in the 19th century. As he gives us Celia's story, McLaurin clearly explains the history of slavery in Missouri and how it intertwined with the national politics of slavery. Reading the book for that alone is well worth it. A Missouri farmer buys Celia from an owner whose name is still unknown. The evil of Celia's new bondage is cruelly and fatefully enforced, even as she and her new master travel back to his farm. What happens to her from then on is a reflection of all the evils of slavery. And the fact that there is so much about Celia's life and her identity that cannot be recovered is one of those very evils.Not to be missed!

Can you imagine being executed by hanging for murdering a person who had been raping you for years? This is the story of Celia, A Slave by Melton Alonza McLaurin. At 14 years old, this young slave-girl was shipped out to work on a farm in Missouri, and like a lot of slaves at the time, she was continuously abused and raped. She accepted this life because of her distorted perception of herself and the world around her until the day she fell in love with a young man named George. Her lover was not keen on the fact that she was ‘having an affair’ with her owner. In hopes of pleasing her lover, Celia attempted to refuse the advances of her master, and one night she hit him over the head with a stick and killed him. She disposed of the body in her fireplace, only to be caught and even betrayed by George during the investigation of the crime. At 19 years old, Celia was held at trial for the murder of her owner and eventually hung for the crime.The book communicated a story of injustice, a story of a distorted self-concept of a young woman who was subjected to suffering and dehumanization. If Celia compared herself socially, she was at the bottom, and she was only a slave without any rights. She was expected to be obedient and remain quiet even though she may have been suffering deeply inside.Not only did society and her master label her as nothing more than a slave, her own lover labeled her a cheater, further feeding her self-concept negatively. Even though Celia was a victim, she saw herself as the criminal, and in her own defense she stated, “the Devil got into me”. She could not even say that she was being accused unjustly or that she was a victim, she could only blame an external force like the devil to explain her crime. Neither Celia nor those around her viewed her as a human being that had the right to self-defense.We can also see in the story how the development of the interpersonal relationship between her and her lover influenced her actions. Even though she despised her owner and the rapes that occurred, she never fought back. It wasn’t until her relationship George developed into a romantic one. In this relationship, Celia fell in love and trusted George. She most likely felt morally obligated to tell George what was taking place and began disclosing everything to him, including what her master was doing to her. This disclosure came at a high risk and because of this and her love for George, she listened when he demanded she no longer partakes in that ‘relationship’ which is what led to the events of the night the murder took place.As each event unfolds in the biography of Celia’s life, the author successfully communicates how societal expectations can influence our self-concept so negatively and deeply that we tend to truly believe it. He also gives a voice to a people that didn’t have one and shows how they were human beings like everyone else. He shows how an interpersonal romantic relationship, trust, and disclosure can heavily influence our actions and ultimately our destiny. In comparison to other books about the history of slaves, I believe this one offers a more personal account as opposed to only timelines and facts. Those who would benefit from this book the most are those who may feel like they have low self-esteem and low self-concept. It may help them identify the sources of which these feelings may be coming from, and this will ultimately help resolve them.

The author does a pretty good job of a case analysis going back and forth (often at dizzying speeds) between the murder case, the political scene at the time (The Missouri Compromise), and the effect this case probably had on society at the time. No doubt, it brought a lot of media attention since the author got most of his material from newspaper accounts. The author tries to be dispassionate but how can you be when covering the story. There are a lot of unknowns in the case that leaves one to thinking what really happened but a smart reader can infer.

I read this for a history class and thought it was a really good and descriptive account of slavery and the justice system. If you're interested in history, then this would be a nice read because it doesn't read like a history book.

This book was actually great and that's coming from someone that doesn't read many books. However, the author kept giving everyone's life story and family tree when mentioned. I thought it would be more about Celia instead of politics. I did learn more about how slaves were treated which was sad and interesting.
