This book is a rehash of old material. I’ve been a Star Wars geek for 42 years and I must say that there is nothing new and inspiring in this incredibly expensive book. And you should also note that the interviews and opinions expressed within these pages were made decades after the films were released. I make this point because George Lucas has consistently tried to reshape his image by contradicting his vision of Star Wars from back when he was a struggling and humble film maker, not the arrogant prima dona that he is today. Many years ago I purchased “The Making Of” book series of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. These three books are still available on Amazon and for a total cost of this Star Wars Archeives book. What sets the “Making Of” books apart from this book is the interviews recorded I those books were actual words spoken back when they were making the films - not ten, twenty, thirty years after the fact. So you get a feel for what was in the heads of the people directly associated with the making of the films as it happened. None of the artwork or photographs in The Star Wars Archeives book are new. Everything contained within this massive book has been published before. If this book was priced In the $70.00 to $80.00 range, I might consider purchasing it for my extensive Star Wars library. But as it is, it’s overpriced.

I was not going to write a review of this book, but the negative first comment made me want to give my two cents as a counter balance.First of all, this thing is massive. Quite a bit bigger than Rinzler's books- it's more comparable to the size of the "Star Wars: Frames" collection.Secondly, the reviewer before me contradicts himself. Is there no new material or is the new material full of lies from George Lucas? The answer is C- there is plenty of fresh content in here, especially about Lucas' early films, and I'm of the opinion that Lucas is not the liar that a vocal minority of the population tries to pass off as the dominant opinion.Anyway, R. Wise gives me weird vibes and I didn't want the crotchety Star Wars "fans" of old to control the narrative.Of course this book overlaps toan extent with other BTS documentation for Star Wars, but the presentation and angle taken keep it from feeling like a total retread of Rinzler's books.

Ok...first off this is an absolutely gorgeous book that's beautifully designed. And it's HUGE and HEAVY. Therein lies one of the big differences between this and the Rinzler series of "making of" books. This book, while it has text running throughout...is less academic than those volumes and more about a knockout visual presentation. (That said, the Rinzler series are also extremely well done and essential for any Star Wars fan) The pictures... and there are many, many, that you've likely never seen before...are as big as this HUGE book...did I mention it's HUGE? ....and are crystal clear. I found myself looking at a lot of pictures that I've seen many times before in a new light due to the size alone. Now if you don't own any previous Star Wars books of this kind...prepare to have your mind blown. And once you've recovered, go get the Rinzler books for a deeper dive. And, as mentioned earlier, even if you own the Rinzler series, you'll find this an awesome companion piece to go with those. (Bonus points if you also pick up the two-volume oversized Ralph Mcquarrie art books) But what about the price? Well, it's crazy expensive at its retail price point, but it's Amazon so you know the game...just wait. It will come down at some point. Highly recommended and essential for any original trilogy Star Wars fan.

Big beautiful book.Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful books about the original trilogy. Duncan has done his research and it shows. The book is organized chronologically and it is full of tons of images I had never seen before. But images aside, the wealth of information is truly inspiring. Quite simply, a beautiful piece of work. The book was not cheap, but it was worth every single penny. Without a doubt, this has instantly became the highlight of my Star Wars reference materials/books.Pick this up as soon as you can—you won’t regret it.The Force is strong with this one.

I can’t begin to explain the number of books I’ve gone through regarding the making of The Star Wars Trilogy...I own the three incredible books by J.W. Rinzler and the two massive volumes on Ralph McQuarrie’s art and this book book blows them both out of the water. This book blew my mind. It is stunning from the first page to the last page. Usually I can find a problem with a book, or something I don’t like: something is missing, too much time is spent on one area, not enough art work is included, it’s not laid out thoughtfully... etc and this book LITTERALLY, has it all. I can’t say enough about it. The chronology is amazing. The flow is scene to scene from beginning to end. My only two slight negatives would be that the book is incredibly heavy and large. It’s not a very practical book in that regard. But, being so large makes the pictures so vibrant and enjoyable. And second, a few times they chose to put an incredible photo, usually a McQuarrie piece of art, right across the center of the book, wrapping onto the other page...and that is a pet peeve of mine. I’d rather a slightly smaller image that fits fully on one page. But they only did it a few times. I recommend this book so highly, it is well worth $160-$220. Buyers/Collectors should buy with extreme confidence and anticipation!

t❤️❤️This was not a bad book. Pretty hefty and it does cover some of the stuff covered in other materials, but for the price there are stuff in there that I had not seen in quite awhile. Let’s face it, Star Wars was big and it went through a lot of iterations before the final product was released and even then, its gone through numerous additions and deletions. This book is a must have if you are. STAR WARS FAN.

Understanding Hinduism (Understanding World Religions)

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-A well-written and thought-provoking series. Each volume opens with graphs displaying percentages of populations practicing various religions-and the religions' projected growth. Following an introduction, each title includes chapters covering origins, what the faithful believe, how adherents practice the faith, rules followed, and challenges the religion faces. (Hinduism lacks "Rules to Live By"; Buddhism adds a chapter on fine arts.) The series reflects on the religions' similarities and notes that each faith will survive and grow. Controversies are handled honestly, but positives are stressed. Each title cites a few recent world events; for instance, in Judaism, the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, VA, and, in Islam, the women's rights reforms adopted in Saudi Arabia in 2018. The writing is dense, though images and sidebars help to break up the text. However, Judaism is less detailed than the other volumes. VERDICT Aimed at mature students, adherents, and report writers. α(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Temper is about twin brothers, Auben and Kasim Mtuze. Set in a fictional analogue of southern Africa, they live in a society that is made up of primarily twins. As a coming-of-age ceremony, these twins are assessed and assigned a mixture of the seven vices.Normally, it's common for the twins to split along a three to four ratio. Sometimes, it can be five to two. The Mtuzes are rare in that Auben has six and Kasim only has one.Kasim has embraced his bad-boy lifestyle. He flirts with the girls. Classes are meant to be missed, right? Also, he isn't afraid to supplement his lifestyle with a little bit of theft. But, as the year turns, Auben starts to hear voices. They're pushing him to go beyond petty fun-seeking and move into more serious misdeeds. Also, he's starting to crave the taste of blood.Overall, I really liked Temper quite a bit! This was Nicky Drayden's second effort, and I'm going to add her to my category of "to-read-upon-release."First, I loved that the story was a standalone. There's nothing wrong with a series. But, sometimes, looking at the book store's shelves, I think that the stand alone speculative fiction novel is a lost art. It's nice to find a story that fits into less than four hundred pages.I also liked the social structure of the world. Peoples' social status depended on how many vices they had. Since Auben had six, he wasn't looking at the rosiest of futures. Kasim was looking at the reverse. He expects to climb to a respectable position on the social ladder. Auben, though, can expect to live in a ghetto called a comfy. Also, I liked the idea of a society of twins. There's a very specific world building reason that this happens that I won't get into here. But, in addition to the male/female paradigm, the twin effect has added the kigen gender, which was an interesting thing to think about. The world of the story is going through an intense debate about religion and secularism. The two sides have very strongly drawn boundaries. Also, mechanical devices are verboten, due to cultural exploitation from machine-using conquerors. The Mtuze's mother is strongly secularist, and she's raised her boys to be such as well. When they choose to explore religion as a means of understanding what's happening, she reacts strongly.I love the sense of humor in the story. Auben revels in the funny. His uncle-in-law, Pabio, illustrates not-safe-for-work "childrens" books, such as an octopus with mouth-herpes. There are other examples, too, but some of them give away a bit too much of the story.I was a little less thrilled with the use of language in the book. It's written in the first-person, present tense. No issues with the first-person voice -- I love it in general. It's just a touch jarring to read at first. Whenever I came back to the book, it took a few minutes to get back into the swing of the text. Also, the chapters were really long. It was sometimes hard to find a good stopping point, particularly when I started dozing off in bed. If the chapter subsections had been a bit more clearly labeled, it would have been easier going.Overall, though, those are some minor nitpicks. I highly recommend this for people interested in reading fantasy set in Africa (something sorely lacking at the moment), and also people interested in drama between family members.

Set in a world where virtues and vices are traits split between twins, people are split by class, and where a teenage boy, just coming into his own along with his brother, become gods. Incredible world building here just as in Nicky Draydens previous novel, The Prey of Gods, along with well written characters that I could not help but really fall in love with. It is most definitely a little dark, damn funny and a real joy to read. Kept me guessing right up to the very end. I received an advance ebook for an honest review

Almost all children are born as twins. Each set split the virtues and vices in some way. Those who have more virtues/less vices become the Greater Twin and those with more vices/less virtues become the lesser twin, Once they are slotted as such, their ability to move up in the world is set. Greater twins become CEOs and run cities while lesser twins become middle managers at best.Auben and Kasim are one such set of twins born of a lesser twin mother, therefore, they live in the comfy (poor neighborhood) and attend a private school there paid for by their mother. When they make a discovery that rocks their world and changes their trajectory.I did not see the twist coming and it was AMAZING!!!!Excellent plot development and world building. Wonderful, rich characters.

I was not really a sci-fi/fantasy fan until I read the books by Nicky Drayden. The Prey of the Gods was the first and now Temper. It has a little of everything from a little humor, terror and most of all the bond and emotional connection of the twin brothers. I definitely would recommend this one.

Temper reveals a brilliant world filled with magic, both good and evil, that paints a vivid portrait of a deeply flawed society. Drayden’s use of class structure examines the struggles of the real world and the implications of poverty on a child’s future. Complete with an epic clash between religion and science, and a fast-paced narrative, Temper is a must read.

This has a superhero feel with a little more depth. Not normally a genre I read, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Enjoyed writing style, original story line and subtle humor. Also listened to audio book which was great. Will read a third time because it required me more than one reading to understand some key points, especially the social commentary.

As a software developer, I tend not to read a lot of 'soft' skills books, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. There's a lot to like with this book, the first thing that grabbed me was the effort the author spent on helping the reader get to the material most relevant for them. For example, there's a cheat sheet at the end of chapter one that identifies your aims or market and directs you to the topics of most relevance to you.I would love to see this feature in more books. As a user of many web sites including the one you're reading this review on right now, I find it fascinating to see the author take a site I'm familiar with, select a feature from that site I've found compelling and then break down that feature to demonstrate the underlying physiological technique behind them. The author uses a lot of real world web sites, so it's nice to see the theories demonstrated in real life situations .It's also nice to have the science behind things like social Identity explained, as we all want to build sites that have strong user engagement.I think this book will help me understand the end-user with a lot more depth than before when designing new websites .

A widening river of distractions and data runs through our brains every day. And this huge flow makes it tough for businesses and organizations to catch and hold our attention long enough to convince us to buy a product or service, donate to a cause, or volunteer. Victor Yocco's "Design for the Mind" offers "seven psychological principles of persuasive design." So there should be little mystery about the book's focus and Yocco's approach. "I am unabashedly pro persuasive design," he writes. "I think persuasion has a bad rap--but I understand why. The word typically conjures up an image of a smooth-talking salesperson, someone who doesn't have your best interests in mind. In design, this can mean trickery and deceit through dark patterns. I'm not writing a book about that kind of persuasion. I'm writing about making your experience persuasive by making it easy to use, by using psychology to improve your design, and by getting people to engage in behaviors they were already considering." He adds: "Persuasion is part of our everyday lives, whether or not we acknowledge it. People need to be persuaded, not because they're dumb or should be tricked, but because most people don't have the time to waste mental resources on making many of life's less complicated decisions. You also know that your competitors are actively trying to persuade users to try their product."Yocco's book aims to help you understand "how people think, behave and react: and help you "learn how to think like your users" and "communicate the needs of users."The 10-chapter book is divided into four major parts:1. Introducting the Application of Psychology to Design2. Why Do Folks Act like That? Principles of Behavior3. Principles of Influence and Persuasion: Not as Evil as You'd Think4. User Experience Design: Putting It All TogetherYou won't get all possible answers from this well-written, adequately illustrated book. But you will get a clear view of many factors and possibilities you must consider while trying to persuade potential customers, donors, volunteers or others who come to your website. And the book's end-of-chapter exercises can help you measure and apply what you have learned. What the book does not cover is "research to make your design decisions," Yocco states. "I advocate having trained researchers collect data. You'll obtain higher quality data and better recommendations from a trained researcher." Likewise, if you are not trained in how to do such research, the book can help you better understand "what types of questions researchers should ask and whom they should ask."(My thanks to Manning for providing a review copy.)

"Design for the Mind" is a very well-written book that brings together principles of psychology with design of digital systems (specifically web and mobile apps). I found Yocco's writing style to be very engaging and approachable. This was a relief, as my expectation was that the book might be too academic for my taste. Yocco does a nice job of referencing psychology texts where appropriate, but explains the academic principles in a way that a layperson can understand.I also found the example web sites with detailed screenshots to be very supportive of his points in the text. The preface also gives the reader a great preview of what the book contains and what it doesn't. (I was glad to discover that Yocco does not advocate user deception in any form.) This is not a book on design for digital; it is a book about applying psychological ideas to digital design. This is a book that I will not only recommend to my retired psychology professor father, but one I'll recommend to my design colleagues as well.(Manning Publications provided me a copy of this book for review purposes.)

Whether you want to create better digital products, design a presentation, convince team members or your boss or your customers about something Victor Yocco has written a book describing how you can use the methods and tools of influence and persuasion to do this. Although Victor focuses on digital design the background material and some of the ideas can easily be used for other purposes. The outset are the scientific methods and how each of these can be used to improve digital designs. Most chapters have a good structure providing an introduction to the method from a scientific point, then explaining what this means for digital design and finishing with plenty of exercises which allows you to practice the content. The book is full of examples and although some of them seem obvious (because we have seen them so many times) getting them in context of the methods and thus understanding why this kind of design works is very useful.I have not read other books that have a similar approach to digital design and as such I find the material very useful. There are other more detailed books on influence and persuasion if that is what you are really looking for although this book provides an excellent introduction. I do think this book is a useful tool, but obviously not the only one to create a compelling and convincing digital product. Why not 5 stars?Although not difficult, I did not find the language and sentences fluid which makes the book slightly heavy to read.

“Stonewall: Breaking Out in the Fight for Gay Rights” by Ann Bausum is a delightfully written, nicely illustrated and – of course – very timely bit of contemporary history. It is designed for the “young adult reader” – what I guess we are now calling the “Millennials”. I lived through all the events she discusses, and, although I was not actively involved in the LGBTQ community until a decade after the Stonewall Riots (my first Gay Pride March was the 1979 “Lavender Anniversary” celebration in Atlanta, GA commemorating Stonewall) from that point on I was very much aware of and involved with the ongoing push for Gay Rights. Bausum is accurate and clear in her discussion and explanation of the many events which occurred. I can only wish, however, that because she gave some attention to the oppressiveness of many Christian denominations which initially contributed to refusing to acknowledge the human dignity of LGBT individuals, Bausum had also mentioned those pioneering individuals and denominations who went against the tide and – just as in the Civil Rights Movement – changed the consciences of so many.Bausum’s book was, of course, published before the Supreme Court decision supporting Marriage Equality, but she accurately predicted that such a decision was inevitable based on the changing attitude of the populace at large. The one thing that I really DIDN’T know about the Stonewall event which Bausum clearly articulated was that the police raids that sparked the riot were NOT specifically motivated by police cruelty but rather by corruption. She explains that the order to “Close down the Gay Bars” in NYC was prompted by the fact that those bars were Mafia controlled, and an elaborate extortion scheme with international ramifications had evolved by means of which closeted homosexuals in the financial sector of the city were blackmailed into stealing negotiable bonds. The Mafia not only paid off local police to keep the bars open, but also used threats of exposure of these well-to-do closeted patrons to fuel the stolen-bond market. In all, as mentioned, this book is both timely and well-presented, and is a worthy addition to Ann Bausum’s already impressive array of titles relating to the major social justice issues in our nation.

It is a useful and informative account of the event geared to middle schoolers. My only complaint is the author trying to apply modern terminology to gender identities in ways that can't be verified. For example, contemporaneous accounts identified some participants as drag queens. The author uses transgendered (as I recall). They may have been trans but they may have also been individuals that just cross dressed for amusement. It is a frequent conundrum when dealing with LGBTQ history because each generation alters the labels. LGBTQ teens with whom I work refer to themselves with terms my generation still find offensive while we often jokingly use among ourselves terms they find totally unacceptable. We see the same with racial issues.

The book is well written, but does not include the many contributions of trans women and people of color to the gay rights movement.

I am so happy to have found this book and been able to explore the Gay Rights Movement through it. It share a lot of powerful history and really shows how it all came together at the right time and place.

Super fast shipping. Love this sad story

Part of HS term paper

Provided very good background to the riots. And the progress made afterwards.

well researched, interesting to read and re-read. Makes the incidents of the night of Stonewall riots interesting enough that you feel you are thereand you want to join in the fight. Love this book!

Deep Simplicity: Bringing Order to Chaos and Complexity, by John Gribbin

From Publishers Weekly

"Chaos begets complexity, and complexity begets life"—the most complex thing there is, writes Cambridge University astrophysicist Gribbin in opening this examination of how chaos theory has shifted scientific thinking. Gribbin, a veteran popular science writer (The Scientists, etc.), points out that chaos theory is based on two simple principles: small changes in the starting conditions of a process can cause big changes in the outcome, and the behavior of the system feeds back into itself to change the development of the system. The way our genes produce proteins and in turn the cells in our bodies may appear so complex as to be "on the edge of chaos," but in fact, as Gribbin points out, a "deep simplicity" underlies all of nature. He details how the second law of thermodynamics, about the concept of entropy, and systems in equilibrium play vital roles in determining the order underlying apparent chaos. Gribbin argues for complexity as the agglomeration of a (relative) handful of natural processes. Yet despite his insistence that chaos and complexity are actually quite simple, Gribbin's sophisticated presentation may prove daunting to casual science buffs. But advanced science readers will find it worthwhile to understand how "we are the natural expression of a deeper order." B&w illus. From Scientific American

"The surprise that we un-fold in this book is that chaos begets complexity, and complexity begets life," Gribbin writes. "The great insight is that chaos and complexity obey simple laws." Chaos in everyday life is random and unpredictable. "But the kind of chaos we are discussing here is completely orderly and deterministic, with one step following from another in an unbroken chain of cause and effect which is completely predictable at every stage--in principle." Yet sometimes, in chaos theory, the complex outcome is not predictable. Gribbin, a science writer trained in astrophysics and currently a visiting fellow in astronomy at the University of Sussex in England, smoothly traces the steps from chaos to complexity in such things as weather, earthquakes, the properties of the solar system, and the rise of the most complex system now known--life on Earth. And then he explores "the biggest question," which is whether there is "life beyond Earth." Editors of Scientific American

#62,535 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I wish this book was available when I went to college. We studied a lot of the things John Gribbin talks about. But it was presented as something very abstract, "pure" advanced math without any connection to the real world around. As such it made for a VERY boring subject and torturous four years.I am truly amazed at how seemingly easy John Gribbin can take the same subject and explain it so eloquently and in very practical terms! In my view this is a perfect example of a great book (see Mortimer Adler's "How to Read a Book", a must for anyone who wants to read analytically) - it can teach most people something new and make your brain work at it.Finally, I would not have stumbled upon this book if it wasn't for Charlie Munger (of Berkshire Hathaway fame) and his annual book recommendations at BRK's annual meeting. He is a wise man and this was a proof that it's worth listening to anything he says.

It is a very informative, unique work by Gribbin about fascinating topics of physics, biology, life and Universe. What is more important it presents brand new experiments and many (maybe too many) mathematical models of network interconnections between simple parts and models of self-organized criticalities in the phase transition on the edge of chaos. This sounds like difficult text, and indeed, especially the third chapter (bifurcations and fractals) is not an easy read. Persistent and math inclined learner should try to grasp the sense of Power Law ("1/f noise"). Then after, satisfaction and pleasure of reading will grow, everything will become clear towards the end of the book. As a long time ago trained chemist, I was surprised discovering Lars Onsager's description of the FOURTH law of thermodynamics and that Alan Turing was not only an "iconic computer man" but worked on oscillating chemical reactions called "chemical clocks". These reactions (quote): "seemed to fly in the face of the second law of thermodynamics"! I was quite enlightened how phase transition can be explained as phenomena taking place on the edge of chaos. Last chapter is mostly devoted to James Lovelock and "Gaia Theory" presenting Earth as a self-organizing, entropy reducing system (check his last book "Revenge of Gaia"). Maverick physicist Lee Smolin has formulated the similar hypothesis about Milky Way. The field of chaos and complexity states that simple rules must underline many apparently noisy, complicated aspects of nature - and this is what John Gribbin writes about. Whether chaoplexologists will find any profound new scientific laws only time can tell. For now enjoy and reduce your entropy by absorbing information emanating from this book.

Having only just read the book 6 years after publication, I don't typically write a review for a book that so many others have already provided excellent reviews. I make an exception if the author provides a stunningly good read as John Gribbin does in Deep Simplicity. It's a quick and poignant subject survey. It is thoroughly applicable across scientific disciplines. It is by degrees overcome by events in specific areas of which the perpetual boogeyman of gravitational theory and the esoteric P versus NP problem of complexity have both evolved into a real world problems as revealed in collecting simple understandings of the expected LHC sensor outputs.Gribbin provides a curious slant to order and chaos through an unfamiliar evolution and synergy among Newton's statics & dynamics through Maxwell's electromagnetics, Fourier's thermodynamics and the limits of mathematical philosophy in Poincare's `n-body' insolubility. I enjoyed the path that Gribbin's takes the reader to understand his argument. There are detours that the topically familiar reader will identify to depart, by degrees, Gribbin's conclusion. This in no way detracts from the Gribbin's effort, rather, Gribbin's argument is a springboard to further development. That there are newly emergent paths to consider after only 6 years of the book's publication speaks to the dynamic subject. The physical sciences have evolved to require a `new' science for information extraction of the many constructs of physical, mathematical and logical operations to integrate in language that carries meaning. Gribbin's hits all around the requirement. Watching IBM's tour de force "Watson" demolish his human competition on Jeopardy through the application of knowledge algorithms is important in the premise Gribbin's initiates.Read Deep Simplicity if for no other reason than gaining a better grasp of the mathematical power properties of complex systems and the significance and real world application of 1/f noise management.
