This is an excellent introduction for the casual reader to the horrific eruption of the Icelandic volvano, Laki, in 1783. The gases and ash of this volcano and the resulting famine killed nearly a quarter of the Icelandic population and much of the livestock on which they depended. It also had catastrophic effects in the British Isles and continental Europe. It is remembered as well for Benjamin Franklin's remarkable insight (ignored at the time) that the widespread suffering resulted from a volcanic eruption. Witze and Kanipe skillfully explain the history and science of Icelandic vulcanism, all the while interweaving the wonderful story of the heroic priest, Jon Steingrimsson, who famously stopped a flow of lava with his legendary Fire Mass and sacrificed his health and wealth to help his suffering countrymen.

A misleading title. The "Island of Fire" (Iceland) and the volcano Laki, figure little in the book after the first 50 pages or so. The book is really a compendium of volcanoes around the world with eruptions that have caused great devastation and loss of life. It's an interesting topic but has little to do with Laki, supposedly the central topic of the book, or with Iceland for that matter. Interesting, but I found it difficult to read, as it jumps around the world. "Iceland" and "Laki" have only small parts to play, and the sub-title on the cover jacket, "The Extraordinary Story of a Forgotten Volcano That Changed the World" is misleading.(I wish the authors had included a pronunciation guide, Icelandic names are difficult.)

This is a fascinating book with maps, photos and an index. Contents are as follows: (Preface) Heimaey 1973; (1) Laki erupts 1783; (2) land of ice and fire: the volcanoes of Iceland; (3) supervolcanoes, the world's hotspots; (4) fire, famine and death: the poisoning of Iceland; (5) horrible phenomena: Europe's "year on wonders"; (6) the big chill: Laki's global fallout; (7) Laki today: life in the mountain's shadow; (8) death by volcano: the many ways eruptions can kill; (9) the next big bang: how worried should we be?There is a very conversation style of writing that is easy to read. I was particularly interested by the Chapter 8 discussion of the killer lakes of Camaroon, Africa, which can emit eruptions of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas which flow downhill and kill people by suffocation. The lake eruptions were controlled by placing vertical pipes down to the bottom of the lakes and letting the absorbed CO2 escape to the surface a little at a time.I highly recommend this book for those interested in learning about volcanos.

Aside from being written for middle schoolers, about half of this book is written about cool volcano "stuff". There's fully 3 chapters of information about Laki and it's 1783 eruption, the rest is fluff from natgeo. The huge breakthroughs in linking this event to a turning of human history are a stretch at best (the authors even concede after pages of suggesting that Laki contributed to the French Revolution that it actually probably didn't...), and aside from a seemingly enjoyable trip (emphasis on singular there) to Iceland to see the landscape and interview some Icelanders with no specific knowledge of the event, the research could have been done with Wikipedia. The pretty pictures were a nice touch.Also thanks for haranging us about man made global warming at the end. So let me get this straight: Laki belched a billion tons of Ash, acidic sulfur, Co2 and whatever else - for 8 straight months in 1783 - and caused global climate insanity, but we are to believe that because we drive cars that the melting of glaciers means there is less weight to hold down the volcanos? Do I have that right?Also please note that pages 121 - 136 do not exist. Seriously - they are literally missing.Awful, awful book.

Iceland is a wonderful place to visit with an extraordinary landscape, history, and people. As it is one of the most geologically active places in the world you might expect that volcanoes have played a big role in shaping the geography and the history of the island. After eyjafjallajokull erupted in 2010 the world became suddenly aware of the possibilities for a volcano to affect the world. In 1783 a volcano called Laki also changed the world. This book tells the story of the Laki eruption and how it affected Iceland and the world at large. It also discusses how volcanoes have shaped our climate and society over time. The geology and environmental chemistry is well explained to a general audience and the style is easy going. As a book which tells a gruesome history (Laki) and how volcanoes can and will shape our world in the future.

I like the intersection of natural science and human history, and bought this because I'd heard of the Laki eruption from reading about the ice core data, but had never seen a good narrative of the 1783 eruption. This fit the bill perfectly. It is quite readable and well researched. It's a timely read too, because in August 2014 the Bardarbunga volcano erupted in Iceland in a long duration high out gassing eruption, termed "the largest such eruption since 1783"! I think it's still ongoing now ( Feb 2015).

Well written for a first book. As a volcanologist, I tagged all the pages with first hand accounts. Witze and Kanipe did a great job making these accounts scientifically relatable and significant. I especially enjoyed the extrapolation to modern day possibilities.

So I was thinking this was more a book with traditional color pages and some coloring opportunity for some reason rather than basically a really awesome, high quality coloring book, but I was pleasantly surprised! Ive included photos since I always find that the most helpful type of review to have in regards to coloring/children's books online. Paper is high quality white with crisp details and backgrounds. Bought mine for a two year old for Christmas who's very much into the outdoors. At this point I think a lot of the coloring aspects would have been lost on him as he's mostly a scribbler so far, but he will love the information. Unfortunately I had to ask for a return since the inside pages of the book came damaged, but the seller was prompt and seamless, and this is still a really cool coloring book. I uploaded some photos so you can see how awesome this book is. It also shows some of the damage to the pages, but not on purpose as those we're just some of the cooler pages I wanted to demonstrate. I'm still on the hunt for a more traditional book of backyard nature, but this will be an awesome addition to his art desk this Christmas as a lot of coloring books for children are just filled with fluff.

I liked this so much that I ordered two more copies, an extra for myself and one for a friend. It's meant to be kept as a book, so the pictures are on both sides. Being a guide, most of the pictures have little "bubbles" of information scattered across them, but the drawings are wonderful to color in and the information is excellent. It's a great color-and-learn book for young people and a delight for an oldster like I am, who loves the local wildlife and plants. There's everything you could wish for--ferns, flowers, mushrooms, insects, reptiles and frogs, birds, mammals... Some pages focus on particular varieties, others are a montage scene with seasonal flora and fauna. The paper is thick and smooth, great with colored pencils--check it on the back page (part of a "field guide") if you want to try gel pens, but be aware that they might bleed through on the double-sided pages. This book is too nice to ruin!

Bought it for an Arbor Day Celebration. Looked interesting. One of the little kids picked it out as a door prize. Hope he likes it!

In The Radium Girls Kate Moore tells the story of these young women, seemingly so fortunate, who were poisoned by the jobs they felt so lucky to have.Radium was widely heralded as a wondrous new substance after it was first isolated by the Curies. It appeared to have an infinite number of uses, one of the first of which was to make the numbers on clocks and watches easier to see. Workers were needed to coat the dials with radium paint, and the best and most efficient workers were women and girls, some as young as 14 or 15. The work was pleasant and sociable: the women sat around tables painting, moistening the thin brushes in their mouths before they dipped them into the paint, chatting, eating, and drinking while they worked, sometimes taking extra paint home with them to practice with, sometimes painting their teeth, faces, hair, and clothing to make them sparkly. When they left the studio their clothing would be covered with radium dust, and would glow ghost-like in the night. The pay was good and the work was easy, but then some of the women started having strange pains in their mouths and bones. Their teeth would loosen and fall out and their jaws, legs, and ankles would develop permanent aches or even crumble.After some of the women died and more became ill the companies making large profits on radium rushed to dismiss any hint that the work was unsafe. Victims and their families sought relief and assistance, but found they were responsible for their own mounting medical bills. The federal, state, and local governments all disavowed any responsibility. Eventually publicity stemming from lawsuits filed by some of the victims (using their own scanty resources) focused enough attention on the problem that governments felt compelled to set safety standards and regulations.The Radium Girls is a horrifying read. The careless ways in which radium was handled, the indifference of the radium using industries and the governments involved to the safety of the women painters (in contrast to the men who worked to produce the radium, who were protected by lead shields), and the pain and suffering of the women themselves are appalling. The safety regulations and restrictions which were finally put into place hardly seem adequate, and the Epilogue and Postscript giving details of the women's later lives, as well as an account of another industry that made careless use of radium as late as the 1970s, are especially harrowing.This is a well written, meticulously research and documented, account of tragedies that never should have been. The radium girls' lives can't be returned to them, but thanks to Kate Moore we can remember, and learn, from their pain.

This is one these books that will stay with you long after you finished reading it. The suffering, the indifference, the greed, the lies, the audacity... 90 years later it is still easy to imagine it happening over and over again.

One of the best books I have read in a long time! Telling the story of the Radium Girls from the standpoint of the girls/women who were victimized by corporate greed and their battle for their rights was wonderful. Kate Moore brought these brave women to light in a brilliant manner. I had trouble putting this book down and highly recommend it.

I just got through reading Radium Girls based the the true story of the girls and women employed to paint watch dials in the early twentieth century with an exciting and new product, radium. Radium sparkled, glowed, and was thought to be good for your health. It was heralded as the worlds newest wonder!! One of the uses was to make watches and clocks easier to see because the radium made the dial light up in the dark. Girls as young as 14 were recruited to join in on the exciting new job opportunity. Girls and young women sat in rows with trays of watch dials with a crucible of radium. They were taught to moisten thin brushes in their mouthes before they dipped them into the paint. They even ate at their work benches. The radium dust would cover the workers and as they walked home at night the girls would actually GLOW. Every girl wanted in on the work as it was good pay and radium was said to be good for your health. Little did they know that the work they were doing was eventually going to lead to their own demise.This book is excellent and gives amazing historical background pertaining to the inauguration of workers compensation, liability, and medical advancements. It is definitely a very emotional charged book. I would highly recommend this book.

If only the women were shown this level of respect in their lifetimes. Their story shines from the pages and is horrifyingly relevant to today. We owe these ladies an enormous debt and it our duty to see it is repaid by never allowing it to be repeated.

This book is an amazing record of women involved in the craze of "the health benefits" and industrial uses of radium that occurred in the early 1920s, lasting well after WWII. They were employed in painting dials for watches and equipment with radium paint, without any knowledge of the dangers to which they were being exposed. As a result of management's subterfuge, they were to spend years suffering from the effect of radium poisoning before finally succumbing. This is the story of their fight for justice in the courts, the fight to stop any further needless suffering and ultimately convincing the courts that the companies should be held responsible. Kate Moore has done an amazing job of recreating their stories, with the assistance of family members, letters, diaries, medical reports, and case notes from the son of the attorney who handled their cases. Moores extensive research results in an amazing story, appalling as the facts may be. It truly is a great read!

I have been dealing with relationship that my intuition has been telling me walk away from for over 6 years but something always brought me back on this merry go round. This book truly gave me the strength I needed to finally walk away. The man I was seeing had qualities of what she called a script writer (and others but mainly this one) and I no longer felt crazy. It finally became clear to me he was scripting out this "person I am" and I was playing along with him to be that person without realizing it. I no longer felt like I was the crazy one plus I saw how I played a role in it. This book is a keeper. I need it for future reference into any other relationships I'm thinking of being part of. I'm so grateful for this book!

A must-read book for women in relationships. If there is something that doesn't seem right, it probably isn't. Don't let anyone dictate your happiness. A relationship is based on honesty and trust as well as compromise on both parts.

I didn't expect much from this book. I'm just beginning a separation from my husband and trying to navigate a lot of unknowns, including why my heart is hurting so much since it's my decision to leave. Although there are more pat-phrases and absolutes than I'm usually comfortable with (knitting circles are made up of angry man-hating cat-loving hags*), there were several insights that were so brilliant and spot-on that I highlighted them and read them out loud to my therapist. Wow. This book really helped me take a necessary step in a healthier direction. I'm so glad I read it.* paraphrased but not by much

My good friend was dating a guy that demonstrated several of these deal breakers. I even saw some of them in my husband... but rather than leave a relationship, I knew I could just feel more sane and validated that these behaviors were unacceptable. Once we know that, we can take responsibility for our own decisions in relationships. Highly recommended to women who are indecisive about whether they are being disrespected. The author helps make very clear what disrespect looks like.

Dr. Bethany Marshall explains clearly on when to work it out with your loved ones or just walk away.She also reminds you that staying with deal breakers will just make you feel worse and unworthy. It's a very good read to those of you that have just broken up with your significant other or planning to break up, or plainly, just having thoughts if he is 'worth' being in your life.

This book seems to be aimed more towards someone who is planning to divorce, although it behooves us all to be vigilant and know our spouse's financial statements at all times. This book is an excellent practical guide for people who suspect a partner is unfaithful and want to protect themselves and their children financially before an infidelity is uncovered 9the cover is blown) and the unfaithful spouse can close accounts, hide assets and leave the wife and children in poverty while he cavorts with someone who is currently the epitome of loveliness. The author focuses on the practical aspects of protecting the family assets and frequently asserts that it is not her intent to provide psychological advice or therapy.

I am very impressed with this book so far. As other readers have pointed out, there are a few proof reading errors but the sections I've read through so far are superb. Also, just wanted to say for those of you confused by an earlier review that this was just machine copied papers or whatever - not the case at all. The book looks like any other large paperback manual. The cover is very nice as well. Professionally printed by a printer, it's not some laser print job from Kinko's! I've added some pictures since I had a hard time finding any myself.

The tension on my Brother machine had gone kaflooey, and I needed to fix it myself, as professional repair is far too expensive -- almost as expensive as a new machine. Also, my Brother handbook makes no mention of adjusting bobbin tension.This book actually helped me correct the problem. It helped me understand what the thread does, down in "bobbinland", in the course of a stitch, and also remarked that tension problems can be due to lint. I had thought that I was cleaning my machine well, and frequently, but using the thread-path diagrams in this book, I cleaned some particular places, with a pipe cleaner, and bingo! problem solved.He also has a lot of discussion of particular machines. I think that I will follow his advice to get a mechanical, rather than computerized, machine, since they are so much more repairable. In my case, for example, I "killed" my first Brother my giving it a static electricity shock one winter. For those on a budget, like me, he recommends getting a basic mechanical machine plus a basic sort of serger. He does not mention buttonholes, though. I would be unwilling to forego automated 1-step buttonhole making.He has recommendations for particular machines (brand and model number) for different sorts of use, including such as high-speed and heavy duty.

I'd imagine that users & collectors of machines would appreciate having informed recommendations on what tools to have on hand.So this is a decent, entry-level book, but still leaves folks who collect/repair vintage machines wishing for more.

This book is great for the person just starting out in sewing and wanting to decide which machine to get, as it has a huge list of models descriptions with the pros and cons of each. Blodget's not in the pay of any sewing machine manufacturer so he tells it like it is. Its information is extensive enough to also suit the professional tailor or sewing-business-person.It also has an extensive maintenance and repair how-to section.Blodget tells how a sewing machine works (it's quite ingenious), which helps you be an informed user of it (how not to break or jam it). He also has a section on the various kinds of stitches (did you know there are actual international standards for them?)There's a short section on "how to use the sewing machine" -- this is actually very brief and basic.This book is: An in-depth information guide to sewing machines themselvesThis book is not: An in-depth guide on how to sew various kinds of articles.You will want to get another book for actual sewing and tailoring techniques.

First, let me state that I practically never write reviews. This book is something special. If I could give it 10 stars I would. Mr. Blodget gives such a wealth of information that all my sewing career (35 years) has been a mystery. Never again will I pay $135 to have a sewing machine tension adjusted only to have it made worse. He tells you how to adjust the feed dogs. He tells you how to adjust the hook that feeds the bottom thread. He talks about sewing machine selection and why an old machine is just as good as a new one so save your money folks!There is no other book out there in this category. I am so thankful he wrote it. What a jewel.

Very thorough guide to sewing machines, including troubleshooting, and I recommend it highly. Janome does have under $200 machines, which I don't think he mentions here. I'm not sure he mentions here, the high number of negative Brother reviews that I've seen on Amazon. I've noticed that Janome generally has far fewer negative (1 star ) reviews that either Brother or Singer. Janome wasn't coming up in my Amazon searches until I started to key in, the name. Janome machines are often sold in sewing shops, but Amazon does sell them here at a range of prices (perhaps because Janome is now selling its products at outlets other than sewing shops). Blodget's book should be helpful with all types of sewing machines.

If you've seen even one Robert Altman movie you know that this is a man who would want his story told as an oral history. Altman's use of overlapping dialogue forced the audience to choose which voice to listen to in a cacophony of sound. Mitchell Zuckoff invited a multitude of voices telling about the Robert Altman they knew allowing readers to sift through the stories to find the man himself.It helps that those speaking are an articulate, amusing bunch unafraid to tell embarrassing stories in which they feature or to call Kevin Spacey the "Norman Bates of Show Business", for instance. No amount of wit would make the first half dozen chapters fly by, however. It's admirable that Zuckoff wants to document the whole of Altman's life but I would have been satisfied with fewer stories of Bob's adventures at summer camp. Once Altman starts making movies Zuckoff's pacing spot on, mixing details about the financing of MASH with choice gossip like Altman's affair with Faye Dunaway. I'm still in awe of that revelation - wouldn't have pegged those two in a million years.The picture that emerges is of a well-loved if not entirely likable man. Zuckoff shows why so many actors were devoted to Altman but he also shows that Altman was just another nasty, loud-mouthed drunk on occasion. One minute you find yourself fascinated by the loyalty Altman engendered, the next you're appalled at the loyalty he insisted upon. Like so many artists Altman put his work above any human relationship and that can be hard to take in large doses.This isn't a critical assessment of Altman's work or an interpretation of his films. It's Altman's life story and critical to that is the story of his work so there are plenty of details about how nearly all of his films were made. Whether you're a fan or not (I'm merely a sometime fan of his work), this is a very enjoyable book, not unlike spending a three-day long bender with the man himself, but without the hangover.Recommended for film and biography fans. Note that this is a true oral biography with very little connective narrative.

As a big Altman fan and a big fan of the oral biography form, it's not surprising that this book had me at hello. What an enjoyable read! Even the early life, slow sledding in most biographies, is vibrant and entertaining. Robert Altman is remembered in vivid detail by those who knew him, loved him, worked with him, sometimes didn't like him. In some cases the witnesses who comprise this book (including Altman himself -- the project started out as an authorized biography) disagree in their memories, or perhaps in what they choose to say. In a way it's like an Altman movie -- a cacophony of voices, sometimes talking over each other, full of images. And very funny. This is no eat-your-peas biography. When is the last time you didn't want to put a biography down or found yourself rationing the remaining pages to prolong it? He was a complex character, that is for sure. This book captures him as well as could reasonably be hoped for.One striking thing is how many of the actors and (especially) actresses say essentially the same thing: the reason they are so grateful to him is he trusted them and let them spread their wings. He said let it go, trust yourself, and I won't let you be embarrassed. He didn't, and they delivered many of the shining moments in his movies. There is one great scene where a young Matthew Modine keeps wanting to go over his big scene with Altman, talk it through, and Altman kept putting him off. Then before Modine knew it the scene had been shot. Afterward Altman put a hand on his shoulder and said look, kid, you're the actor; if it was my interpretation of your character I wanted I would have cast myself. After a while word got around and a who's who of star actors were in Altman movies, sometimes at scale rates. In a sense it is a book about the movies and in another sense it isn't really about movies at all. He was a fascinating person. As one of the witnesses says (ex brother in law?), Bob was a flame who attracted many moths.

This is a fine biography of the director Robert Altman, focusing on his films and his personality. It is told by means of quoted interviews by those who knew him well, and provides a very in-depth view of the man and his work.

I believe that listening to this book, instead of reading it, in fact enhanced the experience. A very personal and intimate view into someone whose life was that of an icon, presented in a way that captured the way the subject himself would have presented it. Or if he didn't, he would have accepted this rendition of his life as valid. Mitchell Zuckoff, by using multiple characters who personally had in fact had personal exchanges with the subject in his presentation, accomplished his goal just as if Mr. Altman himself would have. A very pleasant and informative listen.

Love Altman and loved this book. His story told by the people who knew him best and worked with him for years.

Mr. Zuckoff probably did a good job of showing what Robert Altman was like. It's a very interesting portrait. Problem is this guy is not very admirable. He became famous in the movie business because of his longevity. I wouldn't say from reading this book that he worked all that hard or was that talented.

Well written but Altman doesn't really sound like someone to be admired...
